This would make sense especially with their interest in lbs applications with their recent purchase of dodgeball.

No reason why not. Meetro is as original as Picasa (if not more); would make plenty of sense if they would pick it up.

Regardless, Meetro is a great program that everyone should try!

seriously now, who finds meetro of REAL use? how many times to you feel the need to simply go meet strangers in your area?

Why are some of you so excited? Honestly, not one of these programs does all of what MSN/Gaim/Trillian/AOL/Miranda etc. can do, so I really can't see any reason to be excited about it. Furthermore, I'm not sure about your friends list, but my friends won't be switching to a new IM client unless it offers the same feature set and more, which none of these programs currently offer.

I really find it quite dumb how we are continuously making new protocols for IM instead of improving the ones we already have (ie. Jabber). We should be aiming to make communication simple and effective for everyone and not spreading everyone out through a multitude of protocols that are all just slightly different. A standard protocol for IM needs to be made so that whoever wants to make a client can do so and still have access to all the same people as the protocol is universal and standardized.

And exactly what client are you using right now, ForumTroll?

This program is USA only at the moment dudes and dudettes. Thats why I was having problems

I usually use Gaim. It’s a nice and simple client that handles multiple protocols and can handle file transfers. Unfortunately, due to the abundance of protocols I pretty much need a client that supports multiple protocols if I want to have access to everyone without having to run multiple clients.

I don't get why people praise gAIM? it sucks, it nerfs file transfers and direct connects/picture sharing with people using the normal clients. Its not as transparent as the standard AIM client.

So yah it does have any ads? so f'ing what. AIM+DeadAIM, or AIM+AIMution

Its the same with trillian.

I'll I want is a client that has __very mininal__ interface and works PERFECTLY with AIM/MSN/Yahoo that will do easy skinning support.

That's no good. There are plenty of users still in the win98 era, not to mention you know, people using the hundreds of other operating systems around.

Meetro is ok....but not really a massive hit that google is looking for to put them on the instant messaging map....My guess is they are designing a new
multi IM client

Yeah the whole 5% of the world that uses other OS's are a huge deal to worry about.

Talked to someone at Meetro. A couple of basic things they tell me:

- Mac OS X version at the end of the month
- It currently supports AIM and ICQ, with basic Yahoo support coming in a few weeks.
- An "announcement" will be made soon

It used to have those problems however they have been resolved for a while now. For me it works perfectly and does everything I need it to do and I can compile and run it under pretty much any OS I need too. I think one important thing you’re forgetting here is that it can use multiple protocols which the standard AIM/MSN client cannot do. If you use IM regularly eventually it is likely you will want to communicate with people that are using different IM protocols (ie. MSN, AIM, Jabber etc.) and having one client that can handle them all is very convenient.

I can say that I have a source....who is employed by one of the companies involved. I have talked with execs from meetro who can "neither confirm or deny", but have referenced some upcoming announcements. I'm not gonna pull a "Time" and expose my sources. But on the other hand, I'd really like to find some other sources that can help confirm/deny.

And on the other hand, this thread has taken an interesting turn talking about Miranda, Gaim, Trillian, and the like.

I can get it accept my address that's lame not even if i just put my state in. But its a cool concept. More people just have to use it and the site or client has to have more documentation and FAQs.
