- Akram, on 10/11/2007, -2/+38Alot of software is already green by only distributing online to save from creating packaging etc.
- citrivium, on 10/11/2007, -7/+33"One is open source software, now widely supported by the green lobby. Open source tends to use less resources and - because of the collaborative development process - to be more efficient."
I'm sorry but open source software does not help the environment any more than closed software. This is just a bunch of bunk. - chris9902, on 10/11/2007, -0/+25So you're saying I should stop carving 1s and 0s out of coal and burning them to produce software?
- Gavagai80, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22Green software is easy, just use #00FF00 a lot in the GUI.
- xst4t1kx, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14"Save the planet", the planet will still be here long after we are gone, it's not the planet that needs saving. "Save ourselves" must not be as easily marketable.
- Jesse, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15Just the other day, two goons from microsoft came by and forced me at gunpoint to buy more RAM. And that's a fact, jack!
- bcat, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10It's full of stars!

"Actually, Microsoft doesn't do too badly in the general 'greenness' stakes. According to research by Climate Counts, it is, at least, well ahead of Apple and eBay, despite the criticism from the green lobby."
It seems to me, most of digg's users just like Apple and their products just cuz they're shallow little ***** who want to come off as different from the rest of their peers. And hate on microsoft cuz it's the cool thing to do. - Error601, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Slap an ambiguous marketing label on software? Yep, I can do that.
- Renton, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Somehow, I don't think it's the software companies we should be worrying about.
- jbreckman, on 10/11/2007, -10/+16the fact that microsoft actively forces people to upgrade and throw out their old computers makes them very much NOT green.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Well the easiest way to make more efficient software (long term) is to stop focusing on mindless hacks and design software properly so that later on in life we don't end up with onion skinned software (each major release gets a new layer) where a person has just drawn a huge layer of glue around all the 'optimisation' hacks made by the last bunch of idiots only to add further optimisations on top of this skin to ensure that the next person has to add another layer of glue.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Great, so by keeping old, less efficient computers viable and running, Linux actually HURTS the environment.
- Nick22, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5All I can say is this is stupid and the only useful thing that could come out of this is more efficiant, faster software...so actually this might be a good thing
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5I like that it saves packaging. Manual in PDF format. A simple burn to a CD/DVD which gets bulk stored in a 500 disc case rather than endless arrays of Jewel or DVD cases.
- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6OSS doesn't drive hardware requirements like Windows does. Right now it doesn't because while Linux will run fine on old hardware it is generally used on hardware originally intended for Windows.
- Rikkochet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4The key part of "save" there is generally to save money and effort - I doubt being green has anything at all to do with it.
- IMustBeEmo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yeah, quit burning them, just mount the ISOs in Daemon Tools.
- iBookG4, on 10/11/2007, -8/+11My god...
- Shadow503, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Imagine all those power sucking servers running linux that are straining the electric grid, forcing more coal fired plants to pump more CO2 into the atmosphere.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I think the point is being made that programmers should use recycled bits. I am all for recycling used electrons. Its one more can need to put out, but I am willing to help save.
- juicebag, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4I hate all this "green" *****. I bet they waste more electricity and resources writing these stories than they actually get people to save.
- harlowsmonkeys, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yup. Sometimes you have to wonder what alternative reality these people are in. I came across this on usenet: "The environmental impact of proprietary software has yet to be fully explored, but it's most certainly enormous. Possibly as great as that of cars, if you consider the numbers involved." That was someone attempting to advocate Linux.
- Shadow503, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I have open source software on my laptop which forces my cpu fan to run 24/7, which sucks power, which. . .
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Right, but it doesn't really matter about their motivation behind it, does it? I mean, you don't honestly think Toyota is making hybrids because they want to be green, right? They're making hybrids because they're betting that's where the future is headed and they want to have the largest share of the hybrid market.
I mean, really, anyone selling any kind of "green" product is doing so for the same reason anyone sells anything: to make money. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, the people just need to talk about something. 'Green software' oh my god...
- octowussy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Wait a minute - what kind of soulless jerkoff thinks Kermit is "infuriating"?
- juancn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Mhhh... one thing that comes to mind, is make your software as efficient as possible. Processor cycles consume energy (anyone with a portable can see that). An efficient piece of code can save some bucks of electricity.
So, green developers should profile and optimize their code as much as possible, and avoid all unnecessary eye candy.
The same goes to web sites. Sites with lots of flash ads consume much more energy when viewed (this also applies to too much javascript). - Nick22, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1what the hell are you using?!
- sysadmin88, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1that's simply not true. I have been running the same computer(custom build) for 7 years now and besides a few upgrades I've been through 2000, XP, and now on Vista without any problems.
- Tetraca, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1That's a webpage, not software. In software, it'd be:
10: COLOR 15, 3 - insanebrain, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2yes ??
- JesseJ, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think that has to do with low IQ, not with the "green thing"
- yoda17, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Of course it is. Write software so that every 3 years you need to buy a new computer. Computer manufacturers in-turn support your software and promote your business.
The green rolls in for all. - kerryhall, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3"...the infuriating frog puppet"
dugg just for that. - Bucketshred, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2OHHHHHH
- georgetds, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I guess the fact that we upgrade our computers and toss out the scrap is not green, but what is the alternative? MS DOS?
- smacksaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2FTA: "OK you can do all things that everyone else does - buy a Toyota Prius hybrid or even cycle to work (as long as you avoid Lycra and silly helmets). You can scribble notes on recycled paper with a pencil (made of wood from managed forests) and turn your machine off standby. You can even diligently recycle your printer ink cartridges and offset your energy consumption by planting a few trees."
The only difference between that and fundamentalist religion is that there's words like Prius, bike, bike helmet, recycle xyz instead of God, Jesus, premarital sex, sin, etc. - snowball69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hey!, dang!!!. and me too!!!
- jmnormand, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2so what about all the power it takes to run a server farm 24 hours a day?
- snowball69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, the film was filmed with a green-tinted lens (apparently). Maybe it counts?? :/
- bradbaxter, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Environmentalist are the new theologians of our day. As theologians drive so many people crazy with their splitting of hairs -- so do environmentalist who focus on the minutia instead of the bigger picture. The minutia doesn't save the lost -- and obsessing and debating the ins-and-outs of "green software" doesn't save the planet. The green guys who invest themselves in this kind of talk are more interested in philosophical exercises than in any real solutions.
- snowball69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Saves about as much energy as farting in a bean tin!
- SVPirate, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1True, but it's a nice side effect :)
- vvaduva, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2This has to be the most idiotic story that made the digg front page so far...i hope it gets more digs to create more laughs...
- grumpyrain, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1... if you have a CRT
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Do you know how clean coal is today? Do you know anything about coal plants at all? My guess is, like the vast majority of people who love to talk about ***** they have no clue about, no.
- rarson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1How do you know that farm isn't powered at least partly by solar or wind power?
- jnorris441, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Sure I can write green software.
