- poobread, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37Wow, I think it's a rule of Digg that whenever I try to correct someone, I will invariably make a mistake of my own.
- poobread, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35Have does tinyurl have to do with file storage at all?
- NoOnEx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21hence the "Comments are editable for 1 minute" feature....
- jeromeerome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13The real question is which of these companies will be in it for the long haul. 90% will probably drop off the face of the earth in a year or two. What happens to my data then?
- dealsdealer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15thats why u have the remaining 89 backups.....
- riven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@poobread: He is referring to TinyDisk, a tinyurl.com abstraction layer. http://www.msblabs.org/tinydisk/index.php
- radicaldementia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Exactly, the only real use I can see for these is moving files from one computer to another or quickly sharing files with people. Granted, there are many times when online storage is a big help for something like that, but if you want reliable and easily accessable long-term storage, a web 2.0 startup is _not_ a good solution.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7And what's your host?
- TechnoGuyRob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7My webhost gives me a terabyte of data storage for $5/month (besides other stuff).
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4In 20 years from now when my kids are sending me files over Google's service...I'll go old school on em and use Yousendit.com
Funny thing is for many digg users the idea of online storage systems may be new. However for forum users on music sites, it was the easiest way to trade music online semi-anonymously. In fact 4-5 years ago we were using yousendit very frequently on ughh.com - consonance, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the purpose of the list is not to point out BACKUP services but STORAGE services; there's a difference. Backup services are for keeping a private copy of data you need to keep. Storage services simply store files (for a limited amount of time). Storage services, thanks to their large file size upload limits, are ideal for transmitting files from one person to another - sending files that e-mail services would otherwise disallow. In many cases, you probably wouldn't need that huge archive of your vacation photos to stay on their servers forever, since your friends will only download the archive once - which is all they need. Perhaps the headline is at fault for not using the word "temporary" anywhere in the description.
- stepnet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4in case like me... you didn't like searching for the list:
http://www.listible.com/list/online-file-storage
(maybe i just missed something, but i had to actually search listable for the article in question) - BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4poobread:
It was featured on 2600 a while back... compose a URL made out of the data you want to store (base64 aka ascii armor)... throw it in tinyURL... when you want the data back, put it back in tinyurl, take the URL it gives you, and convert it back to binary - TransmitThis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks stepnet, I looked twice for a link to the list?!
why would I want to go to lifehack when I was drawn in by a promise of a list
Bad submitter "Slap" - TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Rapidshare is great with a premium account
- CircleFusion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.box.net
I recently found out about it. I really like the interface. It's free up to 1gb of space and has publicly accessible folders. - TechnoGuyRob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3lypha.com, but they changed new subscriptions back to 50GB now (I guess I got lucky).
- G33k0ft3chz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Thanks kevin for the suggestion,I've been looking for web hosting for my sites.
Whew I thought I would be searching till the end of this year. - xorian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Very nice list, but not very ordened. Too bad they didn't put it in some sort of table. Very useful though.
- mariaM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is another list of free file hosts, with more extensive descriptions, and user reviews and ratings:
http://www.free-webhosts.com/free-file-hosting.php - designbydave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Good times for some off-site backup
- greekgoat91, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2thank you, i needed this
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.duggmirror.com/software/Introduction_to_90_Online_File_Storage_Services/
- RajAtWork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good list. One missing: www.jetfolders.com
Cross-platform Java client and a Web Service. - Ohnodonho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well said. I've never looked very hard but, I've been searching for free (although it says most are free... it still has some) hosts for forever. I've never found any that were reliable. Most hosts just work when they want too. Just kind of... sputter around.
- wjglenn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Another great one:
http://rsync.net/ - handeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://HostFilez.com
- bgjap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://fileupper.com/ seems like an upgraded version of http://filexoom.com/ - same interface for 5G instead of 2G storage space.
- TDTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its nice seeing 2 of my sites in there :)
- gishnob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have an idea, use truecrypt to encrypt your data, then upload it
- carcus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All I have to add is check the EULA before using any of these services. People are starting to get sloppy and spreading their data all over the place. Using any of these services for backup is a horrible idea! Keep in mind there are actual people maintaining these servers that have access to everything you put on them, checking "delete" doesn't actually mean that you've sent anything to the bit bucket. Just my two cents...
- Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1orbitfiles.com, 1gb
has program, no limit on file size (except 1gb total). You can share the files so others can dl it as well. - armyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Streamload is complete ASS. I was grandfathered into that price as well; I've been with them since 10/2001. In that time they have corrupted & lost many many many files of mine. Multiple unannounced sporadic outages used to happen - though not so much any more. Their offer to me for losing my files? A little more download bandwidth for a month - Yay. I LOST 6GB of FILES! Only reason I haven't canceled yet (and been meaning to for 3 years now) is because it would require me to download 200GB+ of files (if they're still intact and not corrupted/lost) and because I honestly keep forgetting to sit down and take the time to do this.
Their upload service is complete crap - Sometimes files go up fine, other times they will upload right up till the last byte and then fail - requiring me to start all over again. Some files just WILL NOT upload. For instance, I image all my software discs and upload them in case I need them somewhere; when I imaged windows XP Pro and uploaded it... no issue. But then I imaged Nero 6.6 and tried to upload it - EVERY upload attempt fails... through their stupid upload application, through the web browser upload, AND through the FTP access they gave me. This leads me to believe they are "analyzing" the data you upload and rejecting it on some sort of criteria. (I have proven this because it doesn't matter what I name the imaged nero disc, it constantly fails... nero isn't the only program I've had issues with uploading either.) Stay away from this craptastic service and save yourself the headache of getting trapped into having a large volume of files uploaded/lost and no time to download and archive them all.
You're better off running your own FTP server (even if your upload connection is slow) or finding a better company to store online files with. - djgargamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1shameless plug :) http://www.dropboks.com
- ChanKaiShi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just yesterday somebody posted www.inbox.com. 5Gb of storage with no limits with very convenient utilities included. Why this one is not mentioned in any of those lists.
- astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice DIGG!.... now I've got a place to store my pr0n... LOL!
- firstmargaret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Beautiful! sweet!

- terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1No problems with Streamload on my side, I have been with them for about 3 years and never had a corrupted file or any other problems.Even if I did have a problem file, I have my other backups. Always bad to have just one copy.
- Ciebergasm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Great Reference! I'm always open to new alternatives for online storage as I do not own servers myself. Here is one I didn't find on the list:
www.netfast.org
Its more of a web-hosting service, but it provides you with a free FTP server for all your storage needs. It is only 200mb, but I found it a great web-host and a perfect place to keep ebooks I may need for projects away from the home. - terrya64, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I love Streamload with unlimited storage for $4.95 a month. Not avail at that price any longer, I was grandfathered in :)
