- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24It's not centered around MS services. It works flawlessly with blogger and wordpress....
- y0himba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18This is NOT centered around MS services. It took 2 clicks to set it up with my Blogger account. It works PERFECTLY with Blogger. Fast and solid already for a beta. I was using a program called "w.Bloggar", but the web page for this program has disappeared and I really don't think it is being developed anymore. Live Writer is easier to use and feature filled in typical MS fashion.
My only complaint, or question is will the WMP Blogging plugin powertoy work with this? The plugins link in the program itself, "more about plugins..." is not working at this time.
Good job on this! - sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16Anyone wana bet some money that this guy didnt even try the program?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13looks nice
has the whole office family look/feel to it - xose, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23Just tried it out and looks pretty good to be a MS Beta. It's a bit too centered around MS own services, but it's what you would expect from Microsoft anyway.
Also, if you don't like the MSOffice look or prefer a more stable and full-featured blog publisher, check out these ones:
BlogDesk (Windows): http://www.blogdesk.org
Gnome Blog (Linux): http://www.gnome.org/~seth/gnome-blog/
BloGTK (Linux): http://blogtk.sourceforge.net - BenBenMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I've just installed it, and it's pretty nice!

One of the nice things about it is that it will download the formatting from your blog, so when you're writing your post it has all the same fonts, spacing, etc as what will actually appear when you post. - darknight247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Very strange to say this, but this seems to be a solid non-MS centered beta. It's great that it supports all different blog types/services. I will be highly recommending this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Not sure if it's the same one but presumably it is. JJ and his brother created ColdFusion which was then sold to Macromedia, then he created OnFolio which was then sold to Microsoft.
Smart man. - RichSPK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11J.J. Allaire? Did he have anything to do with ColdFusion?
- codplay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Just downloaded, installed, and connected to my custom WordPress installation with ease. It even does a (basic) job of getting my template in. And it posts well. Quickly.
I like it. And the fact that it's a clean GUI. That's nice. Up until now I've been using Zoundry, which is good - although it's GUI could be better. - tomi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Not exactly. Windows Live Messenger currently has a beta for Yahoo! interoperability.
- dn2004, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14In 1995 JJ Allaire co-founded Allaire Corporation with his brother Jeremy Allaire, creating the web development tool Cold Fusion. Allaire was sold to Macromedia in March 2001 for $360 million. After the sale of his company, JJ became frustrated at the difficulty of keeping track of research he was doing using Google. To address this problem, he co-founded OnFolio in 2004 with Adam Berrey, former Allaire co-founder and VP of Marketing at Macromedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JJ_Allaire - adamjh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7The reason it doesn't work with Blogger is that the Blogger API doesn't support image uploading. Google has created a workaround for their own products (i.e. Picasa), but haven't opened it up for the world to use (yet). An example of Google's minimal investment in Blogger since taking it over. :-(
- hawk_eye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Microsoft is getting it !
The Live Writer blog had a link to del.icio.us and also a Digg it ! link
and, this thing is interoperable with Wordpress etc (got my custom wordpress 2.0.4 set up configured without any hitch and real quick too)
wow ! - DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is great! When I set it up with my blog (WP), it got my stylesheet and showed my styles exactly in the page!
Well done MS! - Crypty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You obviously have not used either app.
- jcheng, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4[MSFT employee] Not too badly. In fact if you paste in HTML from elsewhere (including Word, or the web) into our WYSIWYG view, we try to clean it up. Try it and see.
- kirupa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes, it is the same JJ of Allaire, and later, Onfolio fame. You can catch his blog at http://flyingupsidedown.wordpress.com/
- HarrisonHoffman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If anyone is interested, I did an audio interview with J.J. on LiveSide talking about Writer. http://www.liveside.net/comments.php?catid=5&shownews=375
- bsaitz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4oh, this is sweet! i added a blogger.com and Dasblog blog in like 2 minutes - painlessly! and the editor is pretty cool. it also imports your CSS and shows you the editor in the native presentation - nice!
- Phantom76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This just seems to be the completed version of the blogging support built into Office 2007.
- soul12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not quite flawless with blogger unless you are just using text. but if you have images, you have to setup an FTP account for it.
- DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 Yeah! I agree! Great stuff!
- urchinni, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The tool is awesome. The true sense of WYSIWYG that shows posts just when you are editing in your true blog styles. No more, publish, preview, oh doesn't look good, edit, preview....crap.
Obviously some people don't like it! It is just because it is from Microsoft. But people who can see through the hatred, it is clean and simple tool for blogging. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i like the digg link on the page. im not sure what that humurous tidbit is above it though.
how would i integrate this with textpattern? simply or not? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like they made one of the best such products...
- y0himba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you never heard the saying better than sliced bread? It just means that is it extremely cool. best thing since peanut butter and so forth. :)
- mikebritton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have to admit this is nice. I may use it instead of MovableType 2.64's ui, which for anything but administration is fairly bare-bones in Firefox.
Incredibly, the HTML is fairly un-mangled. - DanAtkinson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Bah, you clearly have a one track mind of hating anything Microsoft does, even if it's excellent.
Therefore, your biased opinions are worth f**k all. - cardoso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Zoundry now has serious competition.
- carbontwelve, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1fantastic application, its nice to see such a usefull tool coming from microsoft (shows they are learning what people want and supplying a simple, easy to use tool for the job). For a beta it is already fully featured which is a good start, I only hope it keeps getting better as its improved.
- Columcille, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure what you did but when I installed the writer all I got was the writer.
- iamdexter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I've been using it and its great to work with.
http://www.naturalizer-shoes.org/ - Wolf451man, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Having trouble getting it to connect to my custom wordpress (2.0.4) install.
Invalid Server Response. - datenshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Very cool program. I think I'd even use this full-time if they'd add more service-specific functions for the various blog types -- it doesn't seem to support basic Livejournal features like changing of security levels and userpics which makes it rather less than ideal for LJ users at this point, but perhaps that might change in the future.
- shackbar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Does Writer mangle the HTML? That's a reason I never bothered with Front Page.
- ajskhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool Program
- standsolid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh Boy! I hope they used the HTML export engine from Word!
- glafira, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7The first thing released by Microsoft thats actually compatible with something other then itself.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2agreed
- leachim_6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG its STANDARDS COMPLIENT and works with other things than microsofts PROPRIETARY SOFTWARE *GASP!!*
- gburch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yes he did - he was the main engineer on it, Jeremy Allaire, his brother, was the business mind.
- oxigen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a program called MacJournal. Which used to be freeware, but now is distributed by Mariner Software. I haven't tried the new shareware 4.0 yet, but I have the old 2.8, which does work with most blogging frameworks. I've only tested it with Wordpress and Blogger. 4.0 is probably much better, but unless I can get it for free, I won't be using it.
MacJournal 4.0:
http://homepage.mac.com/dschimpf/ - soul12, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2great program, i hope it will be free when it's fully released. free as in not WGA-friendly free. i tried it on my blogger but the image posting asks for FTP hosting which I don't want to use since Blogger has their own.
nevertheless, i like it for text posting - apollo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2one word .....awesome.
- cubicgarden, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Tested it with Blojsom (blojsom.com) which is part of Apple's Tiger server setup.
I started with the MetaweblogAPI and categories didn't load in (even after refresh). Then I tested the MT API seems to work better on categories but alas none of them posted.
The error I'm getting is....
Server Error 1001 Occurred
org.apache.xmlrpc.XmlRpcException: Unsupported method
Shame, because I might have switched over from w.bloggar. - blogrtools, on 10/18/2007, -0/+0yeah. MS has done a good job. even i too blogged about it. take a look
