- tzonic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+30And remember not to break rules #1 & 2...
Don't advertise on sites such as this what great tracker you use. It only draws attention to our little endeavor. - ImYourRealDad, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22It's more like a "Things most BitTorrent users already know Guide."
You can play around in uTorrent for a good ten minutes and get through all of this. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18brb fbi
- picaro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+14LifeHacker has been pretty lame. Any "intermediate" guide should at least include information on how to submit your own torrents to a tracker.

How to install AdBlock -- A Hacker's Guide - mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15here is a rule they forgot to include. find a good private tracker or 2. also seeding on public trackers is a waste of time and can possibly get you a DMCA notice. you stop being a torrent noob after a terabyte with at least a 1:1 ratio. Happy pirating.
- RiverBelow, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10All these private trackers and encryptions. Gosh, whatever happened too
WHOOPS, OPEN WIFI! - wiifm69, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10mate if you don't know, you don't know.
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Yeah I am finally getting caught up to speed with the whole torrent thing. The only thing that I really need to do is find a private tracker, which is like a guessing game because they'll have a little section in 1 of their links telling you to go find an invite..... which sucks because I have a pretty good seed ratio and I don't even mind doing it.
Anyways, someone should really dive into that, and also, my e-mail is rpotential@gmail.com if anyone can invite me to one. I know it's shameless, but at least I tried. It's a spam e-mail address though, so don't bother spamming. - mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10Azureus is good and was the best client around.. until utorrent came and kicked its ass. uTorrent is best for new users and experienced users alike.
- emceepecks, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11spambots attack!
- OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8I think it should be banned from Digg for a while. Maybe Gizmodo should be banned along with it.
- tatltat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Never talk about private trackers :P
- LANjackal, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Good except for the PeerGuardian part... it can't be proven to work
- Thorlord, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Another thing to add on about security:
in uTorrent go to Options->Prefrences->BitTorrent
under the Protocol encryption part, set Outgoing to "Forced" and uncheck the legacy connections
this will slow down your torrent a little, but it will make it so that ALL connections made to your torrent are encrypted. meaning if you are caught, your ISP will have no evidence against you.
also those corporations trying to catch you will not have encryption turned on (as having it off will make their lawsuit much easier against you) so by disabling legacy connections (as in, you reject non-encrypted connections) you will avoid many detectors. add in PG2 and you have a fairly secure enviroment. nothing is fullproof, but you will raise your chances of not getting caught. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12lifehacker is for retarded
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4somehow thats worse
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4no I said a GOOD private tracker. also the number one rule about private trackers is....
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7guess you'll be needing it (it is 'for THE retarded)
- DCstewieG, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4What I'd like to know is how people find/get invited to private trackers. I'm assuming it has to do with people you've met online and fostered a trust with. Is there any hope for us working stiffs who don't have time chat it up on IRC all day?
- LycoLoco, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8Yeah...a protocol that thrives on the amount of people using it needs to not be promoted. That makes sense.
- Sartori, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4No smoking!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3lmao. not something to be proud of.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4in russia, we don't use "the"
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3well first only use LOL catting when its appropriate 2nd private trackers or the bay if you don't mind slow DL speeds
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5In Soviet Russia, "the" uses you!
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3check your email
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3What's the #2 rule?
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4well post in Russian then because you just spoke English and in the English language we use 'the' also 'retarded people' would have worked
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2or you could just not seed in public trackers
- SomeImagination, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You should get over 1MB/s on a 10Mbit line...
- subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2"nothing is fullproof"
It's "fool proof". FOOL proof! - mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2So why are we still talking about it? STOP.
- simpleid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Hope? yea... just have to hope there's one person who cares enough to e-mail you when you yell out. but how much hope is that... and how much risk... :-)
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I ***** hate peerguardian.. I remember when almost all the trackers used it and my I was automatically banned from them all because peerguardian decided to block an entire range of IPs that included basically everyone in my city. I sent constant emails to them through their request system but they never responded or did anything about it. Finally I told a couple popular trackers about it and they said they were tired of them too and removed their services.
- niviq, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2µTorrent on steroids (make sure you bandwidth can handle it):
DON'T DO IT ON A UNPACHED WINDOWS XP SP2 (AND POSSIBLY VISTA, ALSO) as windows by default allows only 8 half-open connections.
Options→Preferences→Advanced→bt.connect_speed and set it to a greater number (I use 50 on my 10/10Mb connection and get ~900Kib/s already about a minute into the download)
This is not leeching; you will upload-speed will also increase.
I'm using µTorrent trough WINE but if you want to patch you WINXP: http://www.speedguide.net/read_articles.php?id=1497
Please note that some (most don't) wireless routers can run into problems with many half-open connections. - OBKenobi, on 10/10/2007, -8/+9How about stop posting Bittorrent stories completely? Bittorrent really doesn't need to be promoted, it's already too popular for its own good--like Digg.
If someone isn't smart enough to learn this stuff on their own, they have no business being a "pirate" or a Digger. Piracy is serious business! - subliminalurge, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I don't know if I'd say that utorrent kicks azureus' ass. Azureus still has a lot of great features that utorrent lacks that I find very, very useful at times.
That said, I do use utorrent when I don't specifically need those features, since azureus does tend to be slow and a bit of a resource hog. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I believe it is torrentleech, not torrentleach.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I know demonoid is total ass and is practically public.. what I mean is stop talking about it in general. There are a lot of fantastic private trackers that would suffer if they become public knowledge.
- mikesbaker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2what demonoid? its not private it just requires that you register
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1No screen names are attached to it; the beauty of an extra e-mail account.
- Thorlord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1lol guess im the FOOL for making that mistake.
- simpleid, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1uTorrent rocks, Java sucks (at least vm does anyway...).
- Thorlord, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1doesnt work anymore. they are suing you saying that leaving your WiFi open means that you take responsibility for what happens with it.
so you COULD go to McDonalds and download there, and McDonalds would take the suit =) - getrealnow, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I feel for you, trying to find a good private tracker can be a hassle when most of your friends don't even know what a torrent is. Kind of hard to get a invite from any good tracker then. If any diggers can invite me that would be great asdf512tx3@hotmail.com (yes hotmail, great for spam accounts :) I would like oink/torrentleach, thanks
- xenlab, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1some private trackers offer open enrollments - others don't. if you're active in ANY kind of community where the users can be assumed to be familiar with and regular users of BitTorrent, may already be able to hook you up. But yeah, you will need friends to get the ball rolling ... I'm on two private trackers - 1 was an invite, the other I grabbed on open enrollment day. I was on oink, but got booted for inactivity (neither downloaded nor uploaded in the first month) :(
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Get really really lucky.
I know personally for me, I don't have any friends who are probably as nerdy as me (I say that proudly), so it's hard. It's meant to be hard for a reason though, but it does suck.
I know because I haven't been invited to one, at least yet. - Dracker, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Anything is better than nothing. Use it to increase your protection, but don't think for a moment it makes you completely safe.
- Stryder81, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Shut up you FOOL!
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2lol
