- stevenross, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19This was on digg a year ago, still a nice list though.
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Nice list but he missed few that couldn't be missable

7zip http://www.7-zip.org - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's on every once and a while on digg. Im glad for it though I always manage to lose the page somehow!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Maybe you could provide such a in depth well researched list of 450+ common problems solved then? Tell me when your done.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Amen to musikCube and 7-Zip :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This list may have been here one year ago, but I wasn't, so I have to thank you a lot for digging this.
- clink0914, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3great list, i was in dire need of a funny clock
- controlguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3For a moment, I thought the site was crazy not to list the GIMP as a graphics program, but I think this is "freeware minus open source". The GIMP is listed in the open source listing

400+! - jetsetgo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Looks outdated since then. Off the top of my head, Blacklight is proprietary now. (free trial though). And SysInternals was bought by microsoft. Not sure how free any of their stuff is anymore.
- Bigbro69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3>>defrag your HD is built in.
Windows built-in defragger is nowhere near as good as some alternatives out there.
>>Rip music from CDs is in Windows Media Player.
Um.... WMP. *Shudder*.
>>Anti-virus is Windows Defender.
That's antispyware, and doesn't catch much.
>>Firewall is in XP SP2.
If you rely on the XP firewall for protection... good luck. :)
I could go on... - jdstorer2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2GAIM? Why isn't it on the list?
http://gaim.sourceforge.net - ToddCamack, on 02/27/2009, -0/+2ZoneAlarm classifies the site that "DVD Backup Xpress" points to as a "spy site" and won't let me visit it, thank goodness...
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i feel like sharing tonight..i have been setting up my 512USB drive i think i can fix almost any spam, backup, recover, and a ton more problems with it.

peace! - aguynamedben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2anybody know of any freeware that is as good at creating database ERDs as Microsoft Visio is?
- D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Personally I saw this on Digg before and said Hey, I could use that, oh and that one too...
Since then I have gotten a new computer and looking back over the list again I said to myself Hey, that's cool...
I like sites like this on Digg every 6 months or so, so when I upgrade/format computers I can get back what I need... - mediaphile, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2that's what del.icio.us is for
- Eisim, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3old as dirt, but it's pretty uptodate. this list and the opensourcelist (http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-open-source-software/index.html) should cover any needs...
- Leech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1again?!
man, this list is growing.. great! but.. stop publishing it !! - electrichead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I haven't tried Kerio yet but Safety.Net is really good. I had an updating problem which completely wrecked it though, so I switched to Comodo. Comodo is the best (free firewall) I've used so far.
- woodyear99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is awesome, never saw it before. Could come in handy at work when I need to get something done quickly.
Can't beat the prices :p - qbyte, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I want a freeware utility to ... unclutter my system from the the other 100 pieces of freeware downloaded and installed! Sometimes just buying one quality piece of commercial software is better than 1,000 stand alone half developed freeware tools. :)
- grendel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2painful on the eyes.
- sk545, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here is another, from members of arstechnica forums:
http://arslist.geekz.us/ - Mipmap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good list, so much more good free stuff out there though. For example, to mount an ISO file as a virtual hard drive:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/7/b/6/7b6abd84-7841-4978-96f5-bd58df02efa2/winxpvirtualcdcontrolpanel_21.exe. - PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol that was funny
- cyberwiz01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Also EasyTag is very good for mp3 tag editing.
- devdavad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think the CSS tab designer program is spyware, when not running it it constantly asked me to connect to the internet
- ironymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1already knew about some of these, but others i did not. thanks man.
btw for other good (searchable) pc freeware + user reviews see snapfiles.com. - VioletArrows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How are Sunbelt Kerio and Safety.Net? I can't use ZoneAlarm because unfailingly it tears up my system.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3thanks
- patjk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.cleancomputerhelp.com is pretty good too.
- Terrx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm disappointed that GAIM wasn't on the list. Its open source and far better than trillian.
- EnragedGamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The list is nice but....
This one has very good index of freeware
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/ - mattmcm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1HydraIRC looks neat, thanks for the link :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great site indeed. Handy to save the bookmark to a USB for when you reformat a computer.
- Kappa00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Niceeeee
- ironymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0couple more nice mp3 apps i would add:
Songbird - player/browser mashup. only 0.2 developer preview at present, but pretty stable and *very* cool.
http://www.songbirdnest.com
Mp3 Tag Tools - self explanatory. best tag tool i've used. http://www.snapfiles.com/reviews/Mp3_Tag_Tools/mp3tagtools.html - mattmcm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's because this is the freeware list. Open-source is on this page: http://www.econsultant.com/i-want-open-source-software/index.html
- schwack, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Great list of links. Some of them are actually spyware in and of themselves (i.e: ZoneAlarm), so one should take care in embracing all the utilities listed. Yes, the list is dated. But those in the know are able to weed out the links that have better or more current replacements. Honestly, I'd love to have an up to date document like this which offers useful / legitimate / pretty damn cool freeware utilities. This is a respectable start. Thanks to jivebotic for posting this!
- babyphat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice stuff.
http://www.babyphatshoes.us - capimmy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've only been here for a month, but this is by far the best mash-up of apps I've seen on digg.
Kudos for the re-post. - mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1http://www.digg.com/software/Yet_another_freeware_list
- IceZZ, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0A few more: easy graphical FTP is built into XP. (use Add a Network location from the Network menu). You can work on an FTP site as if it was a folder.
Create a ZIP file and add files/folders. Use a "Compressed Folder", it is ZIP compatible (XP and Vista), same thing.
Size of folders on a drive: "dir /s" or Folder properties.
Launch by icons is QuickLaunch on task bar (unlock and drag/drop to configure).
and on and on... - worthawholebean, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2I swear there's one of these freeware lists on FP at least once every 48 hours.
- IceZZ, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Um... so like 1/3 of the tools on that list are things that Windows can do WITHOUT ANY TOOLS. For example, defrag your HD is built in. Rip music from CDs is in Windows Media Player. Anti-virus is Windows Defender. Firewall is in XP SP2. Burn a CD is built in (pretty sure anyway). Play an audio CD is Windows Media player. Capture the screen to clipboard is built in (PRNTSCRN). Installed Fonts is in the Fonts window under Control Panel. Change the cursor is Themes, Widgets/Gadgets are in Vista, etc. etc. etc.
The list should be called "A list of things that people don't know how to do but think a tool will help them." - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2I'm off in search of a torrent with all the apps.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2sweet
- roberto_deneero, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1The only utility that will get rid of your XP/Vista problems for good is called OS X.
