- veritech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and/or you could close explorer.exe and run your game from CMD, (make a shortcut under C:/)
- noghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Might I suggest http://www.blackviper.com/
The guy who made this site was on TSS a while back (Tech TV days) where he was explaining it. If you like this digg, you should consider looking at his stuff. - PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0btw, my system works fine playing games as it is. ...Windows 98/ME?? What's that??? ME was a royal mess! I recall having that OS and it was a complete disaster! :)
- mercury81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's good to know, I'll digg it.
- CatSoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gypea, that depends on what sites you're surfing and what browser you use. Firefox is much less vulnerable if used with noscript. I don't run any of those anti virus/spyware programs resident in memory, I just run a test manually every now and then - and I never get any viruses or spyware. I do, however, run zonealarm for the purpose of stealth ports and to police what programs are allowed to get out. This prevents any Trojans from doing their deed if they would happen to sneak in.
- Wogna, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't have any spyware or virus protection, and i don't have any infections at all. And it's been that way for years.
- Dragular, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What, surely ya'll ain't dissing my dear Windows 98. Oh Windows 98... how I love thee!
[special note: SARCASM] - PrometheuZ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1To hell with all the console bashing, I'm buying both when they're released...then I'll bash! :))
- mrshll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just run SmartClose, or kill explorer and CMD it...
- qypea, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its amusing that they tell you how to disable antivirus and spyware programs, and then don't even mention the danger you would be putting yourself in. Isn't it 5 minutes average without either of those and connected to the net to be infected?
- CatSoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it's a good idea to have all running programs (or at least most) disabled when gaming. Not sure about disabling the win.ini and system.ini though.
- darrenism, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0shell=wow.exe
- xtremesniper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*sigh* Should Microsoft really be telling it's users these things? They can easily screw their computer up if they do something wrong and are not tech savvy.
- dloko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's not about the graphics, it's about the gameplay. That's why retro games still own. And that's why great console games can still be released on PS2.
- rayd8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it looks like it only improves performance on the specific MS games listed at the bottom of the article. does anyone know if that's the case?
- Al3xander, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Anyone still using Windows 98/ME? That is what the procedure is for. Worthless article."
have you even read it???
it clearly stated:
"...follow these steps when you are using Windows XP..." - Darth_tater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well i have windows x64 and franly i dont need to shut down windows in a striped down setup because everything works fine any ways. i do however very STRICTLY monotor waht programs boot up at startup
abd smartclose is an EXCELENT piec of software - JeffS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Still a worthless article. win.ini and system.ini are for 16 bit support. If you are running 16 bit apps in XP then you are a douche and deserve performace problems. As for the startup crap, don't use Real, AIM, and the like and you have nothing to worry about. Or run with 512mb to 1gb RAM and leave the startup items alone. XP and games will run fine.
How;s the driver support in Windows XP x64? I have an AMD 64 and have been considering it. Early on I didn't see too many vendors jumping on that bandwagon. Intel sure isn't. - Psykus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there any way to setup a seperate user for this? I attempted it at one time, but it ended up keeping the same settings for both users. What i'd like to be able to do is have one user, "David", that is for normal use, all programs load and everything, and then have a "Gamer" user, that does exactly what the article is talking about, disables *everything* from startup. And, for online games, I could have an "Online Gamer" user, that disabled everything but the firewall. Since i'm on dial-up, i'm only online when I really need to be, so disabling the firewall in my normal "Gamer" user wouldn't be a problem, since it would be meant for the offline games I play.
- Tenetri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+098 is the best, its much better then OSX 10. 98 gives me more Ram! 512 KB worth
- w00t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is stupid no big news i thought maybe he was gonna go thru all the processes this is stupid because it could disable your anti-virus.
- j0keR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You could always look a guide to disable unwanted Windows services. It takes awhile, but they shouldn't give you much trouble at all after that. Not that I ever have a problem running anything at the same time as a game... More problems come from bandwith-consuming process than actual system processes.
- Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Here here jeffs, here here.
- MadRat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0was just about to say what wogna said and also that i have an always on internet connection.
- Akia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"On the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All." Did they mean unselect the Hide All Microsoft Services and click disable all? After all, it's been proven that all that's needed to run Windows properly is... nothing! As long as it's been booted, everything can be then killed and it works. Don't know why anyone wants to do this since it doesn't help that much anyways since Windows is a renowned resources hog.
- noghead, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow this many diggs? Maby a lot of you guys didnt know about this.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Jeffs, don't be so goddamn cynical. I didn't even know that win.ini and system.ini were for 16-bit support, and I've been an advanced user since 3.11. I couldn't tell you how many config.sys or autoexec.bat files I've rewritten in my life. Quit being an *****.
- Mike.ohara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is lame anyway, It only Disables NON Microsoft Services, you can get a much cleaner and more open system by following one of the many guides and disable *any* service that is not needed.
Or download XP Smoker and Turn on Game Boost which shuts down ALL non essential windows services (microsoft or otherwise) - Chalito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know if anyone noticed but all the games that would be affected by these meaningless little things are games that were made by Microsoft. What a bunch of idiots are working at Microsoft.
- luke--, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's great to see instructions on disabling EVERYTHING that isn't critical direct from MS. I've always wondered about this and didn't want to pick through the services list myself.
I'm willing to bet that this technique also improves startup and 'time before usability' once windows starts. Shweet! - goat2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"gaming?
install gentoo linux.
get cedega, and emulate win32 games in linux.
your game runs "FASTER" then running them in original windows."
