- SoonerDude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3AOL sales reps are required to ask if you want to upgrade when you call to cancel, if they don't they get in a lot of trouble. My brother-in-law works there. He told me the easiest way to cancel without them hastling you is to tell them you lost your computer in a house fire, or it got stolen and you no longer have a computer and won't be able to afford a new one for at least 6 months, they will cancel and won't try to keep you on. Not having a computer is the only circumstance that the AOL employee is not required to try to keep you on as a customer.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here's how I cancelled...
enter chat room
swear up a storm
get booted
enter chat room
swear
get account suspended for an hour
enter chat room
swear
"YOUR ACCOUNT HAS BEEN SUSPENDED INDEFINATLY"
it was easy and fun! (but it was also 1995...so I don't know if their rules have changed) - jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Customer: "I'm into Naughty Grannies. There just weren't enough Naughty Grannies on your service."
AOL: "But sir! You won't find a greater selection anywhere else than on AOL. And as you perform searches with our service, we protect you from viruses and popups with..."
Customer: "AAAAAAHHHH!!!!" - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the best way around their bs is to say "Im canceling because im movie out of the country" that tells them both what your doing and why your doing it and since your leaving the country they dont ask if you wanna try out some "secret" keywords.

I have written letters to them to cancel on three occasions and never once was there a problem. I suppose faxing could save you stamp money. - infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've had the opposite experience. Two years ago I signed up for the free trial, used it once, and forgot about it. A few months later, I called them up to cancel it. They noticed that I hadn't used it passed the trial and reimbursed me for the two months. I didn't even have to ask for it.
- robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Saying you're moving out of the country is actually a really, really good idea. Next time I have to cancel anything i'll keep that in mind.
- Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I once signed up for AOL (and didn't use it) for a $100 amazon.com giftcard offer. Trying to cancel was damn near impossible. Had to literally scream at them. They would not let me cancel. One of the many reasons AOL sucks the big one.
- kfstickman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My parents are screwed!
- G-RaZoR, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember back in the day when I had to cancel. I say I want to cancel, and they ask me if I want to upgrade. Stupid AOL.
- poppopfizzfizz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sounds like dealing with Qwest
- Tweekster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The fastest way:
skip calling AOL
go directly to your credit card company:
"Yes i am having problems cancelling my account with AOL, they are still trying to charge me...please refuse payment in the future if they attempt tocharge my credit card."
basically the words: "Deny Credit card authorization" are very powerful - lpok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I signed up AOL with one of the many cds they sent out because I needed internet for a day or two. Canceling wasn't that hard, called, talked to a women, and she canceled it, no questions asked.
- GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember a similar situation when I had to do that myself. It was also easy for me to cancel, but after a couple months, I realized that on my monthly statement that I was still being charged by AOL. Those sneaky SOBs. :(
- rewritable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TO get them to cancel my account I told the guy I was recording him and "I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH AOL OR YOUR CHEAP SIDEKICK NETSCAPE!". I only had to repeat myself 15 times but I think I got the message through. I have it as a wav file incase anyone wants to hear it.
- GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"what I'm getting at: it took me 50 minutes of listening to extremely polite salesmanship to get rid of that AOL account."
Lmao. :D - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, please send me the wav file! lol
software2@candc3.com - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats moving, sorry =P
- sbasund, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0post it rewritable
- DenDen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The statement alone is digg-worthy.
- TJMeier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is this really Digg worthy? Come on.. Its common sense if you want to get off the phone with sales people to be short with them and not go into detail.
- CowDefender, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd signed up for a free trial to get a gift card at Comp USA.
I called to cancel towards the end of the trial, and they asked if I'd even installed it, I informed her that I had broadband and I didn't need a dial-up account, and I had a budget to tend to, and I had school and the extra content would do me no good...
what I'm getting at: it took me 50 minutes of listening to extremely polite salesmanship to get rid of that AOL account. - chrem88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it work and and i had dial up .
i would try just to see if work - djspike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I had to insult and curse at the person who wouldn't let me cancell. Deffinately annoying. But this guy is rigt... don't give them anything to talk about.
- spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just cancelled my account and it only took 5 minutes! I just said I had DSL, I never used AOL, and for some reason they believed me when I said my router had spam blocker and phishing protection :)
- rundun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yep exactly, you have to say "who pay and have control in the house".
- justinco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Could you send me a copy of that wav file, I am planning on canceling my aol and want to know what I am up against, sounds like I should probably just call the credit card co
thanks - Ravishal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+050 min is very short when I dropped AOL. After being on-hold for a long while the call would be dropped. Six times in a row. I had to for the lack of better word beg them to cancel my account. All told it took 8 hours and 27 min.
- Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I use AOL whenever I move so, when it comes time for me to cancel, I always dread it. I got one girl that was VERY persistent, and I didnt feel like arguing(that is rare), So I let her go through her whole deal about giving me a free month, and when she came to the part where I could Cancel at any point before that month was up. I POUNCED,
I asked AT ANY POINT between RIGHT NOW and one month from now I can cancel my subscription?
"Yes, at ANY point"
OK, then how about NOW.
MAN was she PISSED. - rundun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember one time, I try to cancel an High speed connection, is take me about 40 minutes and 4 people in the company !
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0TO get them to cancel my account I told the guy I was recording him and "I DO NOT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH AOL OR YOUR CHEAP SIDEKICK NETSCAPE!". put it on http://www.rapidshare.de :) - Jest3rr, on 06/03/2008, -0/+0Visit the following link and change your account to a free account... You still get all of the benefits of your AOL account, minus the amazingly helpful technical support (note sarcasm) and dialup access.
https://bill.aol.com/changePlan/changePlan.adp
From that link, you'll need to login to your account and provide the answer to your AOL security question. Once you've entered your information, you can downgrade to a free account without talking to anyone from AOL. - GTAcrimelord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^Good info.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Getting out of AOL is pretty easy. Get TOSed 3 times and they won't let you come back. Things having to do with the mailsystem are sure fire ways to get kicked off since all of that is tracked. I used Mailbombs 8 years ago, but today somebody would probably just spam a little bit.
- Vash_aka_TK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Your all right, aol is a bitch, unfortunately for me I'm stuck with it because companies refuse to bring dsl or broadband out by us. So I'm pleading!! Verizon! Somebody!!! Bring us high-speed internet I'm tired of this aol dialup *****.
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I ended up with 2 AOL accounts (Gratis network sign-up obligations, I think). The first one I told him that I was going to college and no longer needed their service. He kept talking about great games and research opportunities that AOL could offer. I kept refusing, he kept pitching. Finally, he gave up and tried to make me feel guilty.
For the second account I called back, told them my mother was dying of cancer, and that I was pawning my computer to cover medical expenses. Took 3 minutes. - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've never had an AOL account, but someone needed help with their account so I signed up so I could figure out the problem. What a mistake!! I used it once, figured out the problem and never used it again. After forgetting it was installed a month later I got charged on my credit card. I call them to cancel it, not even expecting to get credit for the month since it was my fault for forgetting to cancel. The guy gives me credit for the first month and I thought I was done, but then I got an letter saying I got the refund and that the account is still active. I am going to call tomorrow to cancel it forever.
Pray for me guys.. - titanass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you ever had or have an AOL account please unplug your computer now and thow it out of the window because you are an idiot and dont belong online.
- thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...pumped through a pipe...
...and shoved down his throat...
I believe that was how it went ;-) - thetonio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Lol, I don't like the story at all, useless, but the comments for this thread are good.
I had to call up one time because my Grandpa still had an AOL subscription, even though he had Comcast. I let him know that he didn't need both simultaneously (it's hard for an 88 year old man to grasp technology) so I went ahead and called up AOL for him.
Yes, I had a hellish experience. But the main thing, which the article does get right and a lot of you do: Don't cave in or budge AT ALL. One sign of weakness, and you tagged on an hour to your phone bill. As for the person who said they were on the line for 8 hours, OUCH, brutal, but you must have been way to nice to them.
Basically, I got so sick of talking to them, they were complaining about wanting to talk to the account holder, trying to convince upgrades, etc., etc., so I just shouted (although totally untrue) "MY GRANDFATHER IS HOOKED UP TO A FEEDING TUBE RIGHT NOW, HAVING LIQUID FOOD PUMPED SHOVED THROUGH A PIPE AND THROUGH HIS THROAT. I'M SORRY HE'S UNABLE TO TALK TO YOU RIGHT NOW, BUT I'M SURE IF HE WASN'T IN A COMA HE'D LOVE TO."
Well. It worked. And my conscious stayed clean ;-) - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[quote]I once signed up for AOL (and didn't use it) for a $100 amazon.com giftcard offer. I had to scream at them too!

They are "happy" to "assist" you cancel your account! :D - blondemomma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You pretty much have to call your bank or credit card company and stop payment on these people from allowing them to charge. I got a confirmation # and everything and they still kept charging. So I called again...got another confirmation #...called my bank and stopped payment on any future charges from AOL on my debit card...then sent AOL a "Verification of Cancellation" fax with the confirmatio ID number on it telling them that I had blocked them from charging my card any further. No more charges!!
- Solo203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i was able to get like 9 free mos. out of them. I was broke at the time. My high-speed had to be cancelled. Being without internet is torture. but anyway, i got the trial disc for 3 mos and signed up thru my phone bill thing. 3 mos. pass, i call them, i want to cancel. They talk, Blah, blah, blah, have you tried this and that? I said no, So they said they would give me 3 more mos. for free to try those feature, Which i never use. Who uses that stuff? I just connect to AOL, minimize and open firebird(at the time it was -bird not -fox). So there i was with an extra 3 free mos. Then those 3mos. ended. I called to cancel again. Same thing happened. They asked bout some features, i said no. Got another 3 free mos. Then cancelled for real after that. I moved somewhere else, and got high speed comcast.
