- DCB360, on 04/11/2008, -3/+50I was expecting tips that reflect on many programs, but instead all I saw was, "buy Quicktime Pro." All of the steps provided can be found on Youtube's uploading page. Nothing new at all.
I dugg it for this line, "Somewhere between 700kbps and 1000kbps should do the trick nicely." That is the only information that the Youtube uploader facts doesn't provide. - robszol, on 10/22/2007, -4/+50that girl was hot.

- DGRP, on 10/11/2007, -3/+23The real secret to optimizing YouTube videos is too use Stage6.
- CompIsMyRx, on 10/11/2007, -2/+19Linux command found in the comments with ffmpeg
fmpeg -i input.mov -vcodec mpeg4 -acodec mp3 -s 320×240 -b 1000k output.mp4 - Lane, on 10/11/2007, -1/+18use 320X240 res and 1000kbps from your dv cam. there ya go, no need to read all that mess.
- worxman02, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13You also dont need to spend money on QT Pro. Just go to the local Apple store and get their license key off one of the macs.
- FadieZ, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9Well THAT wasn't a biased article..
- sockpuppets, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11I saw your mom in the hidden beta photos section.
- Shenanigans, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Before and after shots would be nice. There's also this video to help quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OePFgmyvnWo
- estacado, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8Any YouTube link examples of the difference between optimized YouTube vid and the unoptimized one?
- smacksaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6I keep pressing where the "Play" button would be on the girl but the only thing happening is me crying
- BMR777, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Was anyone else disturbed by the fact that this guy has video of a baby in a cage?
- sark666, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6He says to use a high bitrate so your copy is a best it can be before youtube does it's encoding, however this makes long upload times for some that don't have that much upload speed. There are programs that can create flashvideo (flv), it would be nice if youtube would say, use these specs (res, bitrate, audio quality etc) and if it passes a check on youtube's end, then no reencoding would be necessary. This would benefit the user by only having to upload a smaller file and take a burden off of youtube on reencoding.
- idonthack, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4They skipped the in-between :(
- neodorian, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Peecee"?
Buy Quicktime Pro yet "don’t use the Windows Movie Maker. The program handles things with tricky Windows Media codecs and black magic and the blood of virgins."?
Give me a ***** break. Quicktime is just as obnoxious as Windows Media and at least with Windows Media you don't have to pay extra for the full encoder.
Besides, those are the most basic options for people who want to use what came with their computer. Like many have mentioned, there are a ton of other tools out there if you want to go beyond that.
If you're a noob and don't need fancy editing, just use WMM or iMovie depending on your OS. (So far I haven't found an all-in-one capture and edit for linux but I have only tried a few).
If you want multi track, effects, more control, etc. then look into Avid's free version, or maybe shell out a little for something prosumer like Vegas Video. Final Cut, Premiere Pro, and Avid are great if you're serious but that's a matter of preference. - venicerocco, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Or, you could do it more efficiently (if you have Final Cut)
http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/youtube_compressor_gary.html - forgetfulca, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Agree, the most interesting thing in this article is her awesome, um, posture. And state of déshabille
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4"Grainy" or "Pixelly"? YouTube videos are pixellated as hell, but that's not "grain" at all.
- illgill, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5yeah. anyone that read the utube uplaoder knows mp4 is the best. for avi files goto stage six.
- masonexcell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4DUGG DOWN FOR BEING COMPLETLEY USELESS AND UNINFORMITIVE.
- NerveBand, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3It's also another reason why Linux won't go mainstream if there aren't graphical methods of doing the above.
- thesimo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i just wanna see the youtube video of that cute girl on the left :(
- mushroom, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4How to Optimize Your Video for YouTube? Use stage6 http://stage6.divx.com/
- MacMan88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2why go to the apple store when you can just go to serialbox.
- PunkRampant, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Is Quicktime Pro really worth it? I'm used to Windows Movie Maker for editing but I'm willing to pay $30 if it means better quality on YouTube and such.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I think YouTube need to sort out the basics first, such as a player where the random-seek doesn't make you want to kill someone.
- 4eyez, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Actually, billbacon, I've been working in the digital video field for quite awhile now. I'm the special projects director at a webcasting company that handles online video for most of the largest non-profits in the nation, not to mention an alphabit soup of government agencies. I have a lot of expensive pro encoding tools that kick quicktime pro's ass, but for cost and ease of use, as well as a quick turnaround, it's the best cross-platform solution for people to optimize quick, ***** video of their daughter's brithday. Just so's ya know. :)
- Radovan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No mention of keyframes, source resolution, or single/multi-pass options...
If you're really serious about making youtube videos look good then read this:
http://www.squidoo.com/youtuberight/ - billbacon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I like how the guy acknowledges that his friends rolls their eyes at him. Is it just me or does anyone else get the feeling that in real life this guy is a know-it-all that is actually full of sh*t. He probably considers himself a compressionist now that he's managed to use Quicktime Pro to make youtube videos look alright.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2At work, I use WMV for upload to YouTube. The videos I put out look very solid and aren't huge in size. Although, it must be noted that these are videos of speaking events, not music videos. Video bloggers could use the same kind of settings I use with no problems.
320x240, 29.976 fps Video - WMV 9 codec
48kbps, 44kHz mono Audio - WMA 9.2 codec
I also use the exact same videos for upload to GoogleVideo and they come out fine as well. - LethalAmbition, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2OK where can I find the YouTube video of that chick.. look at her. Hot damn.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2right, and this was an article you know
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2where do I find video of that half naked woman? lol
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://digg.com/tech_news/Uploading_Movies_for_YouTube_with_maximum_quality
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1^^ That is one of the reasons why sometimes command-line > GUI.
- louser, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Eark Hickey's brother!
- Javi, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think its Jolie Vaughn
- DCB360, on 04/11/2008, -2/+3It won't really mean much better quality. No one can tell the difference between the encodings as long as the file is bigger then the video should come out better. You can also try increasing the brightness.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1what girl? all i saw was an AD&D 2nd edition Players Handbook behind the iPhone.... //hangs head in shame, and cries self to sleep
- bemenaker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2FUHQ QUICKTIME!!!!
- wrxperformance, on 08/19/2008, -0/+1maybe...?
http://digg.com/odd_stuff/After_999_views_on_Youtu ... - cnldelta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Free Digg for the first guy who posts a real link to that chicks video!
- toekneebullard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Use what you have at the time. What's worse, crappy video, or no video?
- Error601, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The only way to make videos look great is more bandwidth. They're talking about making crap slightly less crappy.
- dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1better yet use VirtualDub + DivX - it's free
- MacMan88, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I'd hit it.
- leethefilmer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Same here. I like mp4 and h.264 but my files always come out like crap on youtube. When I encode them to wmv they come in a lot better.
- Sawta, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The program that he was using looked very similar to quicktime broadcaster. Somehow I have a feeling that this guy got a few idea's from http://www.macdevcenter.com/pub/a/mac/2003/07/01/isight.html
At the very least, this article dosen't seem to have as much information. -
