- thatchimp, on 10/19/2007, -6/+211you mean the 'spank bank' right ;)
- beatryder, on 10/19/2007, -4/+168Or, you can use Truecrypt and not have to worry about it.
- aldenhg, on 10/19/2007, -4/+129Or just put it in a randomly named folder in System or System32. No one is going to mess with anything in there. If you're really concerned, put it in a zip file in a system folder. Hiding it with a null icon just makes it suspicious.
- digimouse, on 11/07/2007, -18/+109starts humming ... the internet is for porn ...
- superjamie, on 10/21/2007, -7/+84There are 100 million better ways to hide your stuff than this. Buried.
- MforMike, on 10/19/2007, -5/+76Now I can hide my paintings of purple cantolopes!
- BalsamLane, on 10/19/2007, -2/+70Much easier.
http://www.truecrypt.org/ - Inferny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+68Truecrypt, hidden volume, problem solved.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -2/+66Too bad I can still get all of your data with a simple file search.
- inactive, on 10/20/2007, -2/+55This is the retarded way to hide data. All of your files can still easily be found with a file search. To *Actually* hide data, read on..
1. Download truecrypt.
2. Create another partition on your hardrive and leave it unformatted.
3. Mount this partition as your truecrypt partition.
Now your files won't show up in the filesystem or in any searches. Why? Because they are not IN the filesystem. All the files (and filenames) are encrypted in your encrypted partition. - krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+51Awesome. No one must find my 50 gigs of bestiality porn and Hilary Duff mp3's.
- omgroffles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42Haha I remember this trick from when I was in 5th grade or something.
It was the easy way to put a "password" on a folder for Windows 98. All would do is use the DOS prompt to change the folder name to "Pron (ALT+2054)" and it would put a special character in it.
Windows wouldn't let you open it because of the special character in the name, so whenever you wanted to access the folder you would open up DOS prompt again and rename the folder back to "Pron."
But of course I never put pron in there, it was just porn really. - edzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41I can't agree more. Security by obscurity is baaaad.
- zombieball, on 10/19/2007, -1/+39If you truly want to keep private data private I would just go download TrueCrypt and encrypt your data. Seems a lot safer than this silly method.
You can even store your files in a 'file container', just name it blablabla.iso and people will think it is just an image file for a cd. Just don't lose your encrypted container or password! - inactive, on 10/14/2007, -5/+42if your using windows it may take a while
- Waskonator, on 10/19/2007, -1/+37I guess this makes it invisible... you can still highlight it. I'm of the opinion that anyone smart enough to find my "hidden" files in my computer is going to be smart enough to notice the blank area that can be highlighted and clicked. my pr0n will never be safe.
- WaterDragon, on 10/19/2007, -3/+35Yeah hide them right next to your books on spelling!
- dicerandom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34sudo su -
mkdir /root/.lolhiddenpr0nz
chmod 700 /root/.lolhiddenpr0nz
done. - fearlessfx, on 10/19/2007, -4/+34and your porn!
- greatcaffeine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+28Alternatively, buy your own computer.
- TaylorSmythe, on 10/14/2007, -5/+31So grab your dick and double click, the internet is for porn!
- Casedot, on 10/19/2007, -0/+25even better. use Winrar to make the folder into a .rar file, then change the file extension to something completely different. It would lower the chance that someone would find what is inside even less.
- diggeddugg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+22Wow, that's embarrassing, I'd be hiding those mp3's as well
- nogami, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21Agreed. Why make an "invisible" folder that an expert could easily open, or that a novice might accidentally stumble across. Make an encrypted file or partition that is TOTALLY secure.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -0/+20Dumb hack. Use truecrypt instead.
- terracottapai, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Well you both have issues with homonyms so it may take you a while to find those 'dock' files.
- unearth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19From the website: It may happen that you are forced by somebody to reveal the password to an encrypted volume. There are many situations where you cannot refuse to reveal the password (for example, due to extortion). Using a so-called hidden volume allows you to solve such situations without revealing the password to your volume.
Ninjas have kidnapped the president, and they want your porn stash as ransom! - freshgrease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18I prefer encryption over this. I don't want the RIAA anywhere close to my music.
- TimChuma, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19That's not gonna hide it from the Party Van though...
- cnot3, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20Why hide your porn, its part of who you are! Just don't let your Grandma snoop around your hard drives, unless she's into that sort of thing.
- FrederikNS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16exactly my thoughts, much more secure, and give a good gut feeling when encrypted with a tripple 256-bit encryption
- dubloe7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15not again...
- stealth658, on 10/16/2007, -1/+16Try renaming a Windows folder with just space. Now try with Alt + 0160. It's not "more teh secreter," you're just an idiot.
- edwartica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Do you have white out on your screen perchance?
- edzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Confusing so use? You have problems using a usb hard drive, don't you?
- dubloe7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13how stupid do you have to be to have trouble with trucrypt. it IS the simple version.
- vonskippy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13So lame my seeing eye dog could find those files.
- darnit, on 10/11/2007, -3/+16How do I undo this? I lost my porn. :(
- psykiv, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Without using truecrypt:
1. Make a new partition in hdd
2, Use mmc to assign it a weird drive letter
3. Use hidedrive to hide new drive letter from showing up in my computer (or pretty much anywhere else from that matter)
4. Now to access your "files" simply type in X: in your address bar.
This should stop like 99% of casual users, without needing to resort to encryption programs. - suprxtragrav, on 12/09/2008, -1/+11even if she was......... i still wouldnt want her seeing it.
- dubloe7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10rtfa
"You can make this folder hidden but then you have to un-hide all the folders when ever you want to find it."
who uses list view anyway?
also, everyone knows that trick. therefore everyone knows how to bypass that trick.
a friend of mine showed me this a few years ago, but i still prefer trucrypt. - kenadamsmith, on 10/19/2007, -2/+11*.dll would work, like porn_filter.dll. HAHAHAHA
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Just don't forget to dismount the volume before you walk away from you computer if your spouse or kids are around."
You can set truecrypt to auto-dismount your files after a set time period. - BalsamLane, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Sorry Beatryder, you suggested truecrypt first. Props to you.
- doubleblack, on 10/11/2007, -3/+12Stupidest thing I have ever seen in all my lives...
- inobla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is exactly what I was going to recommend but you beat me to it. Truecrypt kicks ass.
I use it to mount a file that's on my normal partition. I can "hide" the file in plain sight, nobody will have a clue what it even is. When you open it in Truecrypt, it mounds the file like it's a totally separate hard drive and all encryption is seamless and "on the fly". Wonderful tool for privacy. Just don't forget to dismount the volume before you walk away from you computer if your spouse or kids are around. Padlocks are useless when you forget to lock them again. ^_^ - sgbeal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Me up all night hugging my horn. Porn! Porn! Porn!
- GotoDengo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yep. So much easier, and secure. Maybe subby's girfriend/wife is computer illeterate, but I'm sure many SOs would instinctivly be drawn to a folder whose other info shows up in Explorer, but has no icon. But she probably won't even notice that 20GB win32b.dll file in the system32 directory :)
- DrunkAdmin, on 10/19/2007, -0/+8Best: Encrypt the archive with a password before compressing and then change the extension :)
- dmightx, on 09/21/2008, -3/+11Is that what we're calling it these days?
