Step 3: Kick computer.

What I actually meant was a "Don't Digg" feature. Basically a thumbs down to go with the thumbs up. That way, something that's not cool doesn't just stay on the site with less diggs, it actually goes off the site if it gets too many "don't diggs". Digg? - spamdies, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What I actually meant was a "Don't Digg" feature. Basically a thumbs down to go with the thumbs up. just mark the article as old news and be done with it. - chosenone-, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A series of methods there, but nothing groundbreaking. What ever happened to using Linux?
- PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nothing "fundamental" , no backdoor .. just "log on as admin" or "use passw. disk" lol ..
- toasterwaffle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"What ever happened to using Linux?"
at the bottom they mention a *nix program. - decoyoctopus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"How to remember your XP Passwords"

Anyways, the methods in the article are pretty simple. No digg from me. - FreyrVanir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've used Offline NT Password & Registry Editor a few time to get into people computer when they forgot there admin password. It better then a linux boot disk because it's much faster. Just boot from a floppy, it asks four questions and your done.
Just make sure you give it the right path so it can change the files needed. I went with the default path given, the first time I used it and it didn't work, so I though the program was crap but it does really work.
# winnt35/system32/config - Windows NT 3.51
# winnt/system32/config - Windows NT 4 and Windows 2000
# windows/system32/config - Windows XP/2003 and often Windows 2000 upgraded from Windows 98 or earlier - donsherio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0v.v - yay? i have an admin account on my laptop :P and a guest account active.... hmmm 2 accounts, and mines the only admin one :P safe mode it is :P
and hasnt this been posted a LONG time ago? - krillion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0***Now if you lose your linux/bsd root password, you're screwed.***
maybe you should check this out. I have reset a few root passwords
http://linuxgazette.net/107/tomar.html - scramble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you do computer repair for a living, invest in ERD Commander. I don't work for them in any way, but I use it VERY often. It has already paid for itself a long time ago.
From their website:
boots dead systems directly from CD into a Windows-like environment. You'll have full access to the dead system's volumes, so you can diagnose and repair problems using tools located on the ERD Commander 2005 Start menu. And you'll have built-in network access to safely move data off of, or on to, the dead system. The Locksmith utility allows you to quickly reset the Administrator password on locked-out systems. - Solarusdude, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is a similar digg called, "Reset Windows XP Password" that may also be useful. The link is: http://digg.com/security/Reset_Windows_XP_password
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's upsetting to me to see people posting authoritatively on something they know nothing about. You can absolutely reset passwords on a *nix system if you have access to the box. Research or stop posting, please. Ignorance is not appreciated.
- wjadams, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Next in the series...Methods on How to Dress Yourself in the Morning.
Very obvious techniques...lame - ahmerhussain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about cracking the SAM file. I think they had that on The Broken once.
- coredump0x01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Now if you lose your linux/bsd root password, you're screwed, start the brute forcer. Cracking/changing an admin password should not be so easy. I suppose microsoft figures windows would be too hard to use if you couldn't.
- covaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dreampack that bad boy! A nice BartPE disc with the Dreampack PL plugin and you've got much more than just a password reset tool. Hell, you can bypass the passwords completely (great for sneaking into a system) and then reset them to be active again once you are finished.

- aalaap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think we also need an undigg feature.

-----no you're not screwed, unless you're encrypting the whole HD. Linux passwords are even easier, just boot using anything that will get you edit mode to the FS (e.g. linux boot distro cd rom, or floppy disk, whatever) and edit your shadow password file, just make it "root,," no problem blank password, then reset it once you've rebooted and logged back in. - Theta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Since there is no mention of potential EFS problems after resetting the passwords, no digg...
- diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Show how unsecure Windows is. I'm on an iMac. What do I do if I forget my password you say? I don't.
- mcpaige, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0" Ignorance is not appreciated." second that ! no digg....this is stupid.
- jasonhazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@Theta
great point. they really should mention that once you change the root password you're likely to get locked out of any files encrypted using windows. - TheD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0messing with retail store workers...wow...you, are a true rebel. maybe even a dark knight or some kind of avenger. whats next or your list of super cool assignments, rearranging all the shirts and pants at mervyn's...
- codeyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what crap... next time i'll post that "cow has a tail". I totally agree with the undigg feature
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Now if you lose your linux/bsd root password, you're screwed, start the brute forcer. Cracking/changing an admin password should not be so easy. I suppose microsoft figures windows would be too hard to use if you couldn't."
You're mistaken. It is incredibly easy to reset any password on a Unix machine when you have physical access to it, and it doesn't involve password crackers. - iSEPIC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm just use recovery mode, using windows 2000 boot disk (yes, even for botting into xp), it won't ask for a password (xp boot disk will ask for a PW when doing this), when you're in there do as you please. NO need for linux boot disk, or none of that nonsense.
- shaft, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0thats assuming that the admin password is blank... this is a DUPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
I thought all you have to do is "hit F8" and boot into SAFE MODE and you can login as admin without a password???
Didn't everyone know that? Its how I ***** with the guys at SAM's by resetting all the passwords because they always leave the screens locked and it pisses me off. :) - diggmeplease, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ Added to the above ^
no DIGG - Polly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"What ever happened to using Linux?"
People wised up. - PAStheLoD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0why is this _still_ on digg? and front page .. lol, dumb , mindless diggers :C
