- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4And for the Mac users in here, check out QT-Amateur. Does everything.

- KilgoreCarp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"No thanks, I have trouble gettind used to the fact that you have to get Itunes if you want quicktime."
duh.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html
But this article's about quicktime alternative... - ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ALSO check out the 'real alternative' that's out there
I usually get them from http://www.free-codecs.com/ (which is google's #1 hit for the "x alternative" searches. - antix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Quicktime Alternative is not Quicktime Pro. Misleading title. Of course you can "enable" these features if they're included in an entirely different program.
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rm999: At least you're fairly critical of all the major players. :-) The problem I see is that (at least with Windows Media Player and QuickTime) these players are optimized to run very well on their native platform but their formats aren't entirely supported on others. I have to put forth the argument, however, that many of QuickTime's formats are open standards and *could* be well-supported by any player. H.264 is *amazing* if the developers actually properly implement it. I speak from *much experience* here. I strongly suspect the reason for poor performance on other platforms is largely politically-driven ...
- HottSauce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it that anytime you use quicktime the program adds qttask.exe to your startup? Do I really need something running all the time for those two or three times a month I watch a quicktime video? Oh well, MSCONFIG is my friend.
- Simply_J, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3To all the (lame) diggers flaming Desmond_314. Re-read the code. Re-read it twice.
YOU ARE THE IDIOT MAN! - ZacT1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I hate quicktime. And realplayer
- carlosreif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the story title is a lie
no digg - lilbooga2000, on 01/02/2008, -2/+3For QT Pro 7, Use This Code:
Registered to:Dawn M Fredette
Registration Code:4UJ2-5NLF-HFFA-9JW3-X2KV - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This program is OLD.
I installed it on my work computer cause I don't have admin rights to this machine to install quicktime. - skunkman62, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one day late. i just bought quicktime pro last night for my ipod.
- syuusuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1thanks for the serial techgeek :X
- Willett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just say we all forget about the troubles of quicktime and get VLC. Ah yes, the safe-haven of all media players...
- VelvetNightmare, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cool, have to use it toupgrade on my Mac, +digg
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I am the poster, and submitted this to digg as props to one of my favorite sites... MY BAD... i should have tried it first... I cant get it too work like it says, and its just lame.. i am UNDIGGING!!!
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HottSauce: RTFM - you can disable this. Why it's on to begin with, I don't know (shame on Apple, I guess), but this can be turned off. Additionally, I can't speak for QuickTime's performance on Windows but it works beautifully and seamlessly on OS X. Being an OS X user, this works out quite nicely for me.
- TheGSRGuy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0QT HD content is SLOW on PC, but runs fine on Mac. Conversely, WMV HD runs terribly on Mac but runs fine on PCs. So much for cross-platform compatibility.
- Metal_Guru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0bloody misleading title... QAlt only lets you play QT stuff, not encode... and unfortunately, it wont even let me play QT7 stuff on the internet.
Does anybody run QTPRO(Pre7) AND QTAlt? I can't get it too work, and I ain't giving up my PRO licence for a free player:
http://applestinks.blogspot.com/
Apple Quicktime's system of upgrading sucks! - ccheath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1i use quicktime alternative, and the only time it hasn't worked for me was on a recent digg story that had a movie embedded that was streamed and the server (AND the nyud server) was overloaded. It worked again later in the day.
- colonelpanic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Misleading title, crappy article. Quicktime works fine and if you want the extra features buy it, or steal somebody else's serial. Digg is not the place for articles like this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0but if you click a web link with a .mov extension, a dialog will pop up saying
“Would you like to play this file? File: whateverthefileis.mov YES: Play NO: Download”
or you could view the source.
how did this get on the front page? - Nickhamm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The only reason I would need Quicktime Pro is to encode movies for an iPod. I found a program called Videora iPod Converter that is free and converts any format to iPod standard format a lot faster than Quicktime at the same or better quality. I have used it on several DVDs I own as well as stuff recorded off of my TV Tuner card.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Sorry, needed to add this.
Perhaps you should all read the article before posting your ***** comments? - bingbongplop, on 08/08/2008, -0/+0any Hubbers? here's how to get music off imeem in simple. & quicktime pro trick too.
http://hubpages.com/profile/bingbongplop3 - silent1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Mesostinky: QuickTime is deeply rooted in the operating system in OS X and does some amazing ***** on its home turf. It was built as a third-party solution in Windows though. The difference in performance is understandable. This is the first I've heard that it's "bloated and slow" (ugly notwithstanding) however.
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Has anyone actually attempted this hack and had it work. And another thing, when i click the link to the story i get a "External Protocol Request" any one else get that?
- silent1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 To specify, H.264 is amazing *in QuickTime on OS X*.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0there are too many newbies on this site.
It's starting to piss me off.
you mean to tell me that 282 people have never heard of quicktime alt.?
That's whack! - super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1at least quickime for windows works a lot better than windows media for mac.... god i hate that crap
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0btorrent and anyway its a $30 program damn that will brek the bank
- EarthBoundX5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1missleading title, no digg
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"at least quickime for windows works a lot better than windows media for mac.... god i hate that crap"
That's probably true. But man is QT a piece of sh*t software on Windows. Bloated and slow and ugly.
If I didn't have an Ipod no way would let it on my computer. - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I only pay for well-made software. Quicktime, at least for Windows, is the worst program I have ever used. It threw crap into my start menu that actually used up considerable CPU and memory resources, the interface was clunky and slow, and it constantly badgered me to upgrade to pro when all I needed was to play some stupid quicktime files. It's quite annoying that the only streaming media types are windows, real, and quicktime - all 3 of which have (or had at one point) the most annoying software interfaces.
- alexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Make sure to post when you can do this WITHOUT Quicktime.
- mesostinky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0BTW does this "hack" unlock all of the Pro features in QT 7.x? Or does it just let you export movies?
- planksconstant, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1yeah if you really want quicktime pro, just find one of the thousands of serials already on the internet.
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0it works now i will submit a new digg
- Aezarath, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0thats one way to do it... :-)
- Funkly, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1but you dont... google it..
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've been using Quicktime Alternative for some time now.
Very good.
Allows me to keep my PC entirely Apple free and keeps all the Quicktime ***** off it. - totalshredder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2"or you could just use

- Reliant, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1No thanks. I'd rather be legal and pay the 30.00 US for the right to use the pro version.
- MoeB, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1or you could just stay away from that horrible horrible clunky piece of software (quick time).
