- Wanon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Like clicking the starred category on the left?
- ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I wouldn't call them hidden per se. Maybe useful built-in labels.
- Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Most of these "hidden labels" are simply labels used for the categories Google has set up.
Using "label:chat" is not very functional when there is a category link for chats already on the page... - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That doesn't actually work, unfortunately.
IMO, Contact Groups would work better if, instead of create a new "pretend" contact that contains all those addresses, the group was actually like a "label" that you could apply to contacts instead of messages. It would keep the same metaphor, it would be easier to work with, and searching might be simpler as well, depending on implementation.
As of now, the only thing you can really do is to setup a filter with all your group in it and have it apply a label to incoming messages from the group. - JimmyLin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's pretty neat, however you can just click "Show search options" and there will be a dropdown box where you can choose where you want to search (Inbox, Spam, All Mail, etc...). It does the same as these hidden labels..
- gd007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i hope they put an explicit new button on the left to make it easy to read all those new emails in one page.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I only dugg this article cos the bloke who submitted it is obviously an SG-1 fan, what a legend
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wish there was a "no label" label then it would make it easier to process unprocessed emails
- demonio, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3is there a no_label label?
- brendanc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Forgive me for being blunt, but... why not just click one of the links on the left? Drafts... check, Chats... check, Sent... check. Am I missing something here? Aren't these just the links on the left?
- batmant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I use Gmail as much as I possibly can in my life but a few key things prevent it from being superior IMO.
- No support for encryption. I work with the government and this is a must.
- Read receipts (the corporate world loves them)
- Why oh why can't I filter by contact group (e.g. have all emails from contact group "family" be labeled something like...I don't know, "family"). If this is one is possible PLEASE let me know. - Kappa3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It's not hard to get to the advanced search options anyways.
- SmileyChris, on 04/13/2008, -0/+1Here's a greasemonkey script for you: http://jaidev.info/home/blog/archives/2005/12/05/g ...

Yes, and google can listen in to your black projects..... I think I know US Classification better than you (Even though I am Australian) There is no way in the world that they would use Gmail for sending anything [at any level] except for happy birthdays and the likes.
If you want encryption via Gmail get a client like Outlook etc. or PGP or some FIPS (or higher) approved client. - rlorenzo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have been looking for a way to view just unread messages! finally
- Wanon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2But then what happens when you have so many starred emails that you don't get to see your new emails on the main page? I'd like to see a way to mass unstar email before that.
- 0x0000ff, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2unread mail ... ? oh wait, I have to go to Advanced Search!
Unless of course, I just type label:unread into the search bar at the top of my mailbox... - koko775, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1-label: and then whatever, I suppose. Everything has a label -- inbox is a label
My favorites for archiving:
before: and after: (they aren't labels, but they're really convenient) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ccanni the inbox contains even your other labelled mails.
- ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or you can set up a subaccount and have your family send everything to that address, then just filter that address to a "family" label.
Under mail settings, just go to the accounts tab and add a new account "username+family@gmail.com" then create a filter for all messages sent to "username+family@gmail.com" to be sorted with the family label. (where "username" is your current gmail account name)
I always use this technique, especially for corporate mailing lists/giveaways/whatever. If you start getting spam being sent to username+freeipods@gmail.com, you can just autoforward that to the trash and then you also know that it is www.freeipods.com that sold your address to some spamlist. - ei8htball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1while they aren't technically labels, is:starred (label:starred works to, but is:starred just seems to make more sense) and has:attachment are incredibly useful
- MaxDrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree. The sticky star feature would be handy.
- batmant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Think you might of jumped the gun there a bit. An email doesn't need to be classified to warrant encryption. Classified email never touches the internet so I'm not worried about sending that through GMail (who would). But encryption would be a nice feature to have for the same reasons PGP is nice to have; digital signatures. Some people (friends, family, coworkers, and hell even Leo Laporte) generally filter out any mail that isn't digitally signed and encrypted.
To Google's credit, they at least provide a https:// version of gmail so that the traffic between you and them is encrypted. - upenox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wanon: I agree, but I would like to have the option of taking care of that myself. Really, I would only have a few at a time; I only use stars as reminders for upcoming events or for for messages with package tracking numbers in them. I would have to get into the habit of unstarring them once I'm done with them, but I would like to have the option to do that if I want to.
I always have a FF tab opened with my Gmail Inbox, and it would just be nice to have my important starred/tracking/reminder packages right there on the same page. - ccanni1028, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2There is: it's called the Inbox.
- upenox, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Wanon: No, I would like them to show up under my normal Inbox.
- spliznork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0If you want to save yourself some typing, "in" is equivalent to "label". So, "in:spam" is just as good as "label:spam".
- upenox, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6One thing I wish Gmail would do is allow starred messages to be kept at the top of the list - kind of like pinned or sticky topics in forums.
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1For the contact group, all you have to do is search for the name of the contact group.
- PsychoPNut, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3If they're hidden, how am I supposed to find them?!!!
Sorry, I know you all don't think it's funny. But I do! - surfaceburn1172, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Duhhhhh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0Got any betamax tapes laying around?
