- synctext, on 10/10/2007, -2/+56Hi digg users,
Message from the developers:
We are getting some error reports from
MAC osx powerpc users. It seems G4 support is broken.
We are working on a fix right now.
Greetings,
Tribler team. - jeffchuck, on 10/15/2007, -0/+41Downloading this program seems a bit like participating in a psychology research study. You're forced to choose between helping yourself (faster download) and helping others (more upload), and then one of the survey questions asks you to examine this choice.
- sadsadrobot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+20So what exactly is this program?
- newdigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+20Who else was clicking the Download button and wondering why it wasnt working?
- mp3dog, on 10/10/2007, -2/+20Something smells VERY fishy here.
I'm not touching this with a ten foot pole. - OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15It seems that you have to select the Version from the two rectangles with radio buttons. (It is very bad web design.) Also, the choice is:
* Upload as much as you download
* Download videos at normal speed
OR
* Minimize your upload to others
* Download videos 20% faster
You get to choose between being a fast-downloading leech, or a slow-downloading upstanding P2P netizen. It appears that we are not in Kazaansas anymore. Or is this a Harvard psych experiment. - dakilla91, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Watch the RIAA get on their ass. Stupid RIAA
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Then watch the RIAA vs. Harvard students faceoff. Guess who wins.
- Haplo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11"The Tribler Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Client is a joint research project between scientists from three universities in the US and the Netherlands. The research groups involved are the Harvard Economics and Computer Science Research Group, the Delft Tribler Team from Delft University of Technology, and the Large-scale Distributed Systems group from the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam."

Funny, 23 of the 25 people working on it have nothing to do with Harvard but belong to Dutch Universities... - KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10Mine said 10% faster. I suspect it's randomized as part of a psychological study.
- khalidur2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10anyone know how to stop you constantly finding porn...this could be useful for me and my younger sister...but i dont feel comfortable with opening the programme and finding a whole list of porn on the front page, any way to filter out the xxx category?
- martin2968, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10i like the license agreement:
either "IM COOL" or "GO AWAY"
i'm thinking this is another psychology experiment...? the choice and the survey.. maybe there tracking the content or are changing it to see how users react. If this fails me im going away fast. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+8Yale?
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8It's like Bioshock for bandwith!
- yeahbuddy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Just installed it on my MacBook. So far, upon initial startup, I see the following videos available for download:
Meat My Ass 7
Saw 4 DVD Rip
HentaiXXXAnime
Nudist Teen Camp party.wmv
18 yrs old German amateur girl.wmv
Harvard put this out???
IT'S A TRAP!! - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7In the long run, they'll lose and the new ways of doing things (WebtTV, torrents, Tribler, VoIP, city-wide WiFi etc.) will win. It's inevitable.
- Canute, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Submitted: 3 days ago, made popular 19 min ago -- Huh ?
I always thought the limit was 1 day ? - awhiteflame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Mine said 20 %. I ssh'd into a friends box, and his said 10 %.
- DarwynFour, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7It's a trap.Tried to download something then uninstalled right away.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yeah. I think you are right about it being a psych experiment. The choice of versions was weird and the survey was either designed by a student without supervision, they want to see if people understand the tragedy of the commons, OR they have a technology that gives us the best of both worlds, fast downloads with minimal risk.
I chose the fast one, hoping that they have something ground breaking. - stillasleep00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7So... how is Harvard Law getting away with endorsing this?
- KyleGoetz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Notice that the copyright is to the guy who invented BitTorrent (Bram Cohen).
- rockets, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Me, until I realized that I needed to select my "version"...
- Cr00kie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Weird. You might be right since looking back at mine it said 25% faster.
- connieLingus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5hmm...i wonder if pr0n will be available?
- adude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Why is he being dugg down? How is this different than Azureus's for example?
- hexydes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Source:

Sounds alot like a leeching client...
At least they have a regular version too... - alpharaptor, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8what about azureus vuze, joost and veoh? some innovation...
- hierophantus, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5You're probably lying. People lie on the internet.
- Waterstraal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Wasn't Tribler developed by the Technical University Delft?

Hmmm what's this Harvard thingie then? - vertigoblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4both choices give you the same program...
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+8With the worrisome trend where Feds and Big Media are cracking down on anything that consumes bandwidth and hits some pockets/wallets, trouble might be ahead. Even torrents (never mind the content) are now being intercepted quietly. If you want to P2P audio AND video (bandwidth$$), the ISPs could soon conspire against it, just as WebTV is banned in some places.
- Whammo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You'll get nothing and like it!
- humanseemer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5All i have to say is yuck. It's like vuze for morons. I hope the uninstall got rid of all the junk codecs it installed. This seems like a half assed psych experiment gone wrong. This certainly doesn't reflect well on Harvard in my opinion.
- ThreeDee912, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4"intelligent taste recognition"
I got all pr0n videos... - tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I said 'in the long run'. I mean in 5, 10 years when all the people who are actually knowledgeable about this tech (read: guy's in their 20's now) will be in positions of power/influence in content companies and government and will embrace these and similar technologies instead instead of seeing them as evil stealing that can be stopped by harassing customers.
- sjalloul, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5UNINSTALLED for being a lame application, but can't blame me for trying to understand what HARVARD UNIVERSITY is behind with this offering! Perhaps it's a psychology analysis of users but boy this is lame program especially coming from a prestigious university such as Harvard.
- OsakaWilson, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Does this work for anyone? I did a search and it give me nothing. (Props for the .deb format, though. )
- abandonedhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Wrong. My college campus has begun sniffing and examining packets. Our .torrent files get corrupted when attempting to download them. The only current workaround I've found is to use a proxy that supports SSL, or to use Tor. Those probably won't work for long. I can't even get .torrent files for legitimate (read: non-pirated) software or OSs.
- L33tmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3yeah, I think it's randomized, I got 40% faster.
- jeffchuck, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3There's something slightly different:
~/Desktop$ ls -l tri*
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeff jeff 40828349 Sep 1 17:10 tribler-4.1 - 2.dmg
-rw-r--r-- 1 jeff jeff 40827434 Sep 1 17:09 tribler-4.1.dmg - cairo140, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The way I see it, the program (albeit developed predominantly by Dutch folk) is on the Harvard site, and the download button downloads the same program regardless.
The choice was probably something some social scientists devised for the purposes of quantitative analysis of sharing behaviour. I doubt it has anything to do with the program. - blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The most efficient way I have found to avoid porn is not to look for it. So far it hasn't worked for me. I keep looking.
- Conrey, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Works for me
- blackjack75, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yes, but you know the difference between "Dutch university students farts" and "Harvard student farts". The second one is obviously a genius since he can go the same school GWB did.
- penguincentral, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's a dud. It will take a long, long time to work out the kinks.
Sorry Harvard, but nice try. - DeeCafe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Has anybody noticed/mentioned the spelling mistake on the FAQ page?
"download it, and start wiewing" .... So much for Harvard! - DeeCafe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/8042/harvardkeystage1gd1.png
- DonutGuy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Junk codecs, in vlc?
