- josefresco, on 12/17/2007, -4/+19java ... lag ... no thanks
OOO is lean (and non-invasive) enough I don't mind having it installed locally.
Or I just use Google Docs. - Vegiemaster, on 12/17/2007, -1/+9It.
- Onestone, on 12/17/2007, -1/+9It's optional. Most OOo features work without Java.

try it yourself - dpinkston, on 12/17/2007, -4/+11Hard drives are getting bigger and cheaper. Yet we are coming up with more ways not to use them. Before you know it most games and apps will be ran online.
- pjkli, on 12/17/2007, -1/+7It's so you can use the app on any computer anywhere.
- willemmulder, on 12/17/2007, -1/+7what? why would you say that?
OK. your name. I see. - KesshoRyu, on 12/17/2007, -0/+6It's clearly so we can save more porn.
- LisaThurmond, on 12/17/2007, -0/+4What about security issues? How intrusive will the monetization strategy be?
- meez, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3Odd, I don't have java, and OOo Writer just loaded in about 0.9 seconds. What office suite have you been using?
- meez, on 12/17/2007, -0/+3Does the supreme idiocy come free with iWork or do you have to pay extra?
- jrbrewin, on 12/17/2007, -0/+2not from the article. you're 'remote controlling' an application. notch one up for functionality. take it away again for responsiveness.

- spect3r, on 12/17/2007, -2/+4Google Docs is near perfect.
I like the idea of having OO as a standalone suite, but if I'm going to go mobile - I really really enjoy Google Docs, and would find it hard to switch. - romistrub, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2Google Docs has the insanely annoying problem of scrolling errantly when more than one person is editing the document simultaneously. That being said, it's still awesome (although that problem is incredibly frustrating).
- LeeSoong, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Below Me,
Trabeck ! - jrbrewin, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1rtfa, this online version is java vnc. google vnc if you don't know what it is.
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1So you want a hard brain teaser! Well, here it is.
- LeeSoong, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1My sub-cranial implants, PiP retinal displays, and bone induction surround sound
are working just fine, thank you. - jrbrewin, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1of course, the internet connection goes down, does it?
using an inferior app is no excuse for forgetfulness, or laziness. - headshot1485, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2If Linux wants a better chance at becoming a popular workstation OS, web applications may be the best way to go. From working at a school, the cost of MS Office and Windows is cumbersome. I would love to see this succeed.
- mfaras, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1FTA: "Due to its desktop-cum-web nature, it easily offers the most features of any online office suite."
So that's why apps are moving online: Dirty desktops.
Keep your hands off!!! - luckyzzkl, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2Let's say you are a student.
and let's say you are too cheap to buy paper (or in my case, even "forget" to buy a printer)
and you want that bad ass paper you just wrote about Utilitarianism for your philosophy class printed out
Scenario- Philosophy Class every Tuesday and thursday ....
Day- Tuesday.
Step 1: you write the paper ... (yup the most important step!)
step2. you upload it to the online account
step3. you print it from the school comp lab.
....
So far so good, I could use a usb mem stick you say. but...
Thursday:
-The paper is returned with marked points to be corrected.
Step1: Go to the computer lab (preferably use ur bike if its too far away)
Step2: Bring up the paper
Step3: correct the points and print it
Step4: Drop it off at the philosophy department on ur way home.
pfft. with no worries about forgetting my stick home. everytime i have access to the internet i also have access to all my papers. I currently use google docs, and I must admit i never use it as my primary writing app. but it's 100% useful.
I could use my phone like you but. If the paper is a (lets say) physics lab report, its a pain to edit it.
its also a pain to print (if possible at all). - Ratteler, on 12/18/2007, -1/+2Waist of time. This won't work on my T-Mobile Dash, or other limited web device.
So basically I need a computer with enough muscle to run FireFox2.0, which means I can also run the FULL version of OO. - nallelcm, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1run*
- digitalvik, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1Exactly my point too! Do you want hands on access anywhere or rather carry a computer all the time.?
- Atomic1fire, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1you mean besides zoho
- SubaruPowah, on 12/17/2007, -1/+2I sure hope their spell check consists more than 1000 words this time.
- michaelz92, on 12/17/2007, -0/+1oh god, java = slow, digg effect = slow. java + digg effect = unusable.
- Atomic1fire, on 12/19/2007, -0/+1which is why you would use both methods
a copy on the interweb ensures convienence until the connection is out or you cant find a netted comp
a copy on usb ensures availibillity until you loose it - jrbrewin, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1suck java vnc, oldskool screenscrape application? you are, of course, having a laugh, right?
this has to be the worst way of cloud computing i've ever heard of... and i've heard of some pretty stupid ones before now. - Opspin, on 12/17/2007, -0/+0I would if I could, the site seems to be down. That should be first rule of the Internet, when you have a cool new product, you should be able to hand the digg or slashdot effect I'm expecting is behind this.
- jrbrewin, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1oem windows license = £0 - £60
office home / student edition = £70.
ps, this implementation of OO isn't a web app. - kingofpenguins, on 12/17/2007, -9/+9You got you OpenOffice in my browser!
- axelilly, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0I think that this is pretty cool and useful. I can access my documents and work with them from any web browser. It's also useful because I can continue to only need to learn how to use the OO features and those skills are still portable.
It's nice to know there is an on-line alternative to Google Docs. - sanman, on 12/17/2007, -1/+1OpenOrifice FTW!
- jrbrewin, on 12/17/2007, -2/+1why? i have office 2007 at home, office 2003 at work, mobile apps on my phone, and for everywhere else that i might possibly be that i can't use them (internet cafes that don't let me install java) i have google apps (until office live goes public). what possible need is there for this?
- fsweep, on 12/17/2007, -1/+0Blame it on Java--- it is an easy enough target.
- V1ncent, on 12/17/2007, -4/+3Open Office is so laggy I never use it. Java = snail's pace.
- flowersmang, on 12/17/2007, -2/+1?
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -2/+1Death to hard drives. Magnetic disks are so 2001.
- MrSarcasm, on 12/17/2007, -4/+3Suck a laggy java application that runs another application that need two minutes to start?..
It's not good enough even for microsoft. - inactive, on 12/17/2007, -5/+3local install of OOo uses java as well you know.
- dmadip, on 12/17/2007, -4/+1suck what?
- EvilAnimator, on 12/17/2007, -14/+6Suck it, Microsoft!
- inactive, on 12/17/2007, -13/+1bah why use Open Office when you have iWork... opensource is a bunch of BS wanabe coders
