or returned to blockbuster... - chris9902, on 10/12/2007, -2/+40only 1 click

handbrake for mac
k9copy for linux
anything more sophisticated should require a tutorial.
marked as lame for sure. - jdawg19, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16or Netflix ;)
- basye, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Dugg this for other people's better suggestions,
not for the article. - hypnotizd, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Why use this program?
Step 1: Use DVD Fab Decrypter to remove all copy protection and region coding.
Step 2: Open files with DVD Shrink, shrink and burn.
Does that really need to be automated? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11There need to be more ads for external backup HDDs on this article.
- crane007, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I started using ripit4me to backup all my DVDs. It is a true one click backup solution.
http://www.ripit4me.org/ - crane007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Try RipIt4me
It can get by ARccOS and RipGuard
http://www.ripit4me.org/ - ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Easiest solution: RipIt4Me (DVDDecrypter) + Auto Gordian Knot (AutoGK).
Compress with xvid at 100% quality.
This way you can archive dual-layer DVDs on a single disc without a noticeable loss in quality. DVDShrink mangles movies that are 7GB or more. The compression ratio with MPEG2 is just horrible in a lot of cases. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It actually makes a lot of sense when you consider their motto:
"Computers make us more productive. Yeah, right. Lifehacker recommends the software downloads and web sites that actually save time. Don't live to geek; geek to live."
I think the point is that most DIY-type project take tons of time and devotion to get working the idea of lifehacker is that 'hacks' should make your life simpler. I swear I don't work for them I just find it a refreshing thought when too many 'cool projects' end up leaving you with no free time. - detrate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I guess people have forgotten about Auto-GK
- N00F, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I love DVD Shrink! When I buy a new DVD movie, job #1 is to Attack the disc with DVD Shrink. It allows me to remove all the ***** adverts, previews and FBI warnings. The end result is a backup disc that I can plop in my DVD player and the movie starts just as soon as the door closes.
THAT'S THE WAY THINGS ARE SUPPOSED TO WORK!!!! - bambam43410, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6theres a program called handbrake.
http://handbrake.m0k.org/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Nothing at all new here: DVD Shrink > *
That and DVD Shrink works under WINE. Yummy! - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3BTW, if you want MacTheRipper 3.0, we're giving early access to our current beta builds to people who donate to the developer (geezerbuttz) to support continued development. More info in our forums here:
http://www.ripdifferent.com/phpbb2/viewforum.php?f=26
We're working on compatibility with all the new copy protections coming out, and have them mostly licked in the latest MTR 3.0 beta releases... - malice8691, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3DVD shrink does keep the menu structure.
- SlabbaJabba, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Hack Attack! Mother******!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4pardon the ignorance but isn't dvdshrink discontinuing development? - yeah, it still works for many titles, but shouldn't a guide like this continue with some other fairly low intensity DVD ripping software (such as SmartRipper and others?)
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2AutoHotKey is the key program here, I use it at work for repeatitive things and its lovely.
Does take some messing with the script commands to get it to work perfect but it is great when you get it right. - WiseWeasel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The only other current format with the capability of emulating the functionality of DVDs is the Matroska format (.mkv). Unfortunately, tools to take advantage of this functionality and convert between DVDs and MKV are rudimentary or non-existant. More work really needs to be done to make a DVD replacement for internet distribution...
- mrthebunny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok I have a small "newbie" question : which handbrake options must I use to encode to Divx ? (not xvid, my living room dvd player doesn't support it - I have the pioneer DV-393-S)
Thanks! - yikiad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sweet...thanks sirspocksalot!
- nickishappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use DVDRip in linux. It takes a little while but it gets the job done quite well.
- leonwehttam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its Sufjan Stevens not Belle and Sebastian
- 4815162342, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11 click rip m/
US version of the Office :-/ - ssvalenteno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AutoHotKey is super-sweet, any repetitive task can be recorded and ran again at the click of a button
- Dunce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DVD Decrypter does the job thank you very much
- vbsurfer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Latest DVD Shrink version:

Anyone know a good mac solution? - acidtrx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1All you really need is Slysoft AnyDVD (to bypass protected DVDs), DVD Decrypter to rip the DVDs to your drive, and DVD Shrink for those DVDs that exceed the average 4 GB size unless you've got some 8 GB discs on hand. At least that's how I go about backing up my DVDs.
I only like to use DVD shrink if needed, for compression of larger DVDs (for example) or if I want to re-author of course. - systemlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice Music
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*ahem* Chances are, if a DVD skips when you play it in your media player... it's going to skip during the ripping process and totally screw you out of however long it went before it failed to rip.
- goingstuckey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ditto
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Duh.. so you can rip out certain .VOBs that have FBI warning, or even extras you don't want. Then you can run it in DVDShrink if you want to for better quality. You can also edit the menu and its buttons to not go to the deleted options. But of course I would just use DVDDecrypter to rip the files in the first place.
- ttkoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So a quick question, since everyone on here seems to know more than me... I have a portable media player (the Archos604), which plays divx and xvid videos. So, whats the best PC utility for ripping a dvd, then saving it to a divx file? Yeah, I know, I said PC... I'm waiting a few more weeks before I swap everything over to Ubuntu. Long live the penguins! Thanks!
- Evolve, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Some of the articles on Life hacker are good but this is just pathetic.
1. Download DVD Shrink: Good
2. Insert DVD: Good
3. Open DVD Shrink and Click Open Disc: Good
4. Select "Back-up": Good
5. Choose select "Hard Disk Folder" : WRONG!
DVD Shrink can create an entire .iso image of the DVD no matter what the encryption. Why would you waste your time created a folder with a useless backup of the individual files on the DVD ?
Creating a Single .ISO image of the DVD and then mounting that in Daemon Tools or even Burning it to DVD with nearly any DVD burning program makes much more sense, less hassle and is faster.
Why on gods green earth you would 'back-up' the DVD to folders when DVD Shrink can do so much more is just plain stupid. - TresCoronas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use a different method, more than 1 click, but saves you more than 3 gigs (if you dont want the menu's, extra features, etc)
http://elliottback.com/wp/archives/2005/12/26/how-to-rip-a-dvd-a-tutorial/
I've been using that method for quite awhile, once you get used to it, it doesnt take long @ all. - OutcastJiob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2You get a digg up for that awesome reference. Highfive!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just use Sony's Click To DVD 2 that came with my PC but I also have klmcodecs installed on my computer. I can burn a 4mbps DVD and it will have no skips, poor audio, poor video or anything that makes you lose immersion from the DVD.
- invader, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've had Shrink DVD crash on me a few times trying to rip certain DVDs.. I'm pretty sure I was running the same version.
- MSwanberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not sure about reasonable time... depends on your hardware, but my fave is DVD43 plus the commandline version of Handbrake
Or just Handbrake if you have a Mac - tower31, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1AnyDVD will do that too...
- OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The video made no sense at all. it was too blurry to read anything and it really had no instructions. Why did it need a loud soundtrack too. hell why was it even done as a video?
- jp71270, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1there you go, i'll help
- dumky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Is there a way to rip and compress a DVD, but also keep the DVD structure (interactive menus, chapters, subtitles, etc.)? Do any of the DivX, Xvid, and other formats support some of these DVD goodies?
- ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1All 1 click rips suck, they look so washy/pixelated at times. Please do your selves a favor and visit www.doom9.org and read the Quality over Speed guides to make quality backups. DVD-RB + CCE FTW!!!
- numarc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what was that a reference to?
- Ankhwatcher, on 02/08/2008, -0/+0Or your friends house. Ah, remember the good old days when you used to borrow things...
- Myounage, on 04/19/2009, -0/+0Dugg. ***** the MPAA.
