- jonreily, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Use this program daily. It is simply the best for multiple machines running several monitors. Truly the geek's best friend!
- dfndoe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16How exactly do you think a KVM will allow you transfer applications between computers?!?!?!
- h3ndrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16I think Single Monitor is what the KVM switch is really about... just a thought.
- xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Link to the program they are speaking about:
http://synergy2.sourceforge.net/
(In case lifehacker takes a dive) - Trebis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9People use this on WoW to control multiple characters on multiple accounts, and have them all do the exact same thing. There's a guy on my server that does this with 4 priests. The first time I saw him, I almost had a wtfattack
- mdc10s, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I have been running synergy for a few months now, truly great software. Saves having to have a KVM. Another one you can try too is maxivista.com. Enjoy!
- KeithBarrett, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8This has been around for a long time. Why is it that old information is becoming front page Digg news?
Time to start digging through all the open source projects. Announcing "GAIM", "Cygwin". VNC!
Use "grep" to filter log files! Use SSH to create encrypted tunnels!
Need help? Man pages are on the web! - HalFTW, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12How is installing software and using it as intended a "Hack Attack"?
Buried for this stupid practice of calling everything a hack. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I normally park my Ubuntu laptop next to my XP desktop and end up switching between keyboards. I installed synergy on both after reading about it just now; the setup took me all of five minutes and it works exactly as advertised: everything works "out of the box" and no connection problems (yet). A new addition to my "download immediately after OS reinstall" list. :)
My one disappointment is that I only found out about it now.
Btw, if you're using Ubuntu, use the QuickSynergy graphical client to avoid having to mess about with config files. - Netrilix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I threw my KVM in the closet because of this software. Been using it for a long time.
- scottymrit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5This is nothing like VNC or Remote Desktop. It is a software KVM. I have my Linux box and my Macbook hooked up with it. The mouse and keyboard work for both machines, across three monitors. It Rocks.
- GeneralKickass, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I learnt something new today. Dugg.
- Iwantawii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Works as advertised. However...
I use a Logitech Wireless desktop system that has all the bells and whistles (volume, zoom buttons, shortcut keys, etc.) and these lose functionality on the HOST system while using synergy.
I can understand why anything other than A-Z, 1-9, and F1-F13 wouldn't work on a client connected machine, but it really should on the host. - unusualbob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6um... has no one ever heard of vnc? I've been using it to manage our servers for years.
btw, ultra vnc works w/ vista. - RicktheBrick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I use vnc to control several computers from the main one I use everyday. The problem is I still have a switch to control which computer controls the monitor, mouse, and keyboard. I have found that I need this when there is a problem with one of the computers booting up. This program as well as vnc require each computer to boot before one can control that computer. I recently changed a microprocessor in one of my computers. I needed to update the bios before it would boot. I needed to see what it was doing before it booted up the OS.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Synergy rocks my world.
I have my two desktops (windows and linux) and laptop set up using Synergy. 4 monitors and 4 CPUs total. - Amything, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If using 2 Windows machine what are the benefits of it over using something like Remote Desktop?
- ldhertert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If I remember correctly, this doesn't work very well in Vista because of UAC. Perhaps they've fixed it, but it was annoying when I used Synergy & Vista. Now I use neither.
- the0ckid82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3haha Ive had this for ever just never installed it ... i finally got around to setting up on my work rigs so now i can use my mac keyboard and mouse to work on my Linux box and my windows box .. simply amazing
- Mardala, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5@unusualbob ... I think you are missing the point of synergy. Think about having a laptop and a desktop. You can control both with the same mouse and keyboard. Why use VNC when you can use your laptop monitor?
- domino42, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use synergy daily at work. I love the fact that it works between Linux and windows and I can copy text from one machine and paste it to the other (doesn't work on copying files but theres plenty of stuff to do that already).
- PARTyZAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've also been using it for quite a while now. But I'm kinda surprised that almost noone mentioned, that this project is (sadly) dead. There was no activity by devs for over a year now.

"IT IS OFFICIAL NOW. SYNERGY2 IS UNMAINTAINED.
I added the information to Wikipedia, too
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synergy_%28software%29).
Let's hope we get some exposure as currently no one can update the
homepage...
Any volunteers to take over Synergy2 development?" - nofrak1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3... ssh anyone?
- AK10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One great use for gamers is to run Teamspeak/Vent on an old laptop next to your gaming box and use synergy to send the trigger key (to talk) to the laptop from your main keyboard. This can be configured as "send to screen" via the "hot keys" button in Synergy.
Advantages:
You have the TS window up so you can see who is talking and who is on the server, change rooms without alt-tab etc.
You are offloading the CPU/Memory used by your chat program to another computer.
You can use the laptop speakers to hear people talking while cranking up the game sounds on your main PC. If someone sneezes it doesn't blow your house up. - insanewriters, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's so you can use different machines using the same keyboard and mouse. I have Synergy Server on my MacBook Pro and Synergy Client running on another PC I have at my desk. I can just move my cursor in between screens and just use my laptop's keyboard and mouse. And, yes, you can copy and paste too.
- jftitan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using Synergy since it was debuted on TechTV... I think by Morgan, but I forgot her name. But this is old app that i've been using for over 2 years now. I love it. it makes my 4 screen setup look badass. Three monitors for one desktop, my laptop. Sharing the same wireless kb and mouse. People just look at my setup and just ***** themselves. (NOw I don't personally have the ultimate rig, but I sure love the fact I watch TV on the left screen, browse digg on the center, monitor torrents, or other activities on the right screen. Then scroll across to my linux lappy, and use GAIM to IM.
The fact that this is cross platform is what makes this amazing. Oh I hope the soon get the cross screen file transfers. because I really want to be able to drag a file from my laptop to my desktop and visa versa. - Gremlin87, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I work with software on multiple OS's and Synergy is great, I have it between a Mac and a PC. It takes a bit of setup to get the configuration file working but after that it's pretty seamless.
- bitszor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I, along with many other comment posters, have used this software to control multiple desktops. What I'm wondering is...why hasn't anyone mentioned the annoying bugs that are still in the software? I had issues with keys sticking (Shift and Alt namely) as well as copy/paste failing to function between two clients. The only way to get it working again is if you reconnect or restart Synergy, which can get annoying if you have to do it a half-dozen times in an eight hour day.
It also hasn't been maintained in at least a year, so don't go off suggesting this to your boss to use as a corporate solution. - ldhotsoup, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're not supposed to use it like a remote desktop solution, you're supposed to use it as a software controlled KVM (without the V, I suppose). I have three computers in a row at my home office (two desktops, one laptop), and I don't have to move keyboards and mice just to keep tasks running on all of them.
It's excellent for when I set my laptop on my desk, but don't feel like plugging in peripherals to it. - justice7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yay welcome to six years ago
- MattCruikshank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd like the opposite - control one computer with multiple keyboards and mice. A multi-touch display is close to what I want, but it's not exactly it.
For one thing, I'd use it for code reviews...
Picture, for instance, one giant projector, and multiple people can control different parts of the display, but then easily start interacting with others... - fuzzmeister, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Along the same lines, people should check out Maxivista (lets you use your laptop as a 2nd screen for your desktop).
- galrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VNC is a remote desktop... synergy allows you to kb/mouse switch. You can have two computers with two monitors, and use it like a dual monitor system by moving the mouse across systems at one edge of a screen (and you get the advantage of separate CPU/GPUs and not just another monitor). You can also use it if you have two computers hooked up to the same monitor (through different inputs). This allows you to just switch inputs and push a keyboard combo and you are using the other machine. VNC uses a window with the remote machine inside, while it is nice for remote desktop it doesn't allow for the same effect.
- SpazticChips, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Synergy makes life easier, 5 monitor set up between multiple computers, flawless and increased efficiency.
- BionicSeraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is one of my favorite programs. I've been using it for about 6 months now at work to interface with my work laptop and desktop. The only thing that annoys me is the inability to drag something from desktop to desktop. I just set up shared folders on each computer and shortcuts to them on the Desktop.
- AssProphet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree, I use it to control my mac mini (htpc) in my living room. Now I've no more need for the bluetooth mouse & keyboard (waste of batteries and space).
SynnergyKM does need to have some bugs fixed though, I frequently have connection problems and I have to restart the synnergy app. It takes half a second, so it's not a big deal. Still though, it needs to be addressed and it hasn't been updated in over a year. - chrisrowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My setup using Synergy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzPY5Vbfbwc
Awesome software! - brinkness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Worth noting: AFAIK and have been able to determine via search, there is no encryption on the communication.
This means that any passwords you type into your synergy-connected laptop are sent over the network essentially in the clear. - HHP2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use a hacked version of Multiplicity for controlling my computers, and it always runs silently in the background. I like this idea and I'll bookmark it, but I'm pretty satisfied with what I've got now.
- quentinp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've got a 16 Port KVM with a VNC server built in...I wouldn't want to work remotely all day, but to manage my servers quickly is awesome (you can see and control during POST as well...which comes in very handy to say the least!) The only issue is VNC looks like crap and is a bit screwy (have to turn off mouse acceleration on the remote machines...mouse is completely screwed at the Windows logon screens)
Have to buy custom cables, but they're nifty a VGA type plug only on the KVM end and either VGA +USB or VGA+PS/2 on the computer side. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"I use it to control my mac mini"
If you are controlling several macs, and only macs, it's better to use Teleport. It's free as well (so this post isn't spam :P) and leverages several OSX technologies like Bonjour, encryption and file/clipboard sharing. The only downside is that it isn't cross platform.
http://abyssoft.com/software/teleport/ - ahhell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4No one gives a ***** that you use a Mac.
- Philluminati, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Will someone PLEASE TELL ME what it does that VNC doesn't?
- alen3K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1For those of you who are annoyed by the fact that synergy keeps stealing focus and minimizing games (full screen applications) try this
http://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=1719040&forum_id=199580 - Armitage2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VNC is not the same thing... picture 2 machines, side by side, 2 monitors... VNC is picture in picture sort of...
- dugem1, on 01/20/2008, -0/+1That's great find

http://hyipnews.freehostia.com/hyip - MikeCerm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just turned off UAC. I never had any security problems with XP SP2, so I don't mind giving up the extra protection that UAC provides, and turning of UAC eliminates a lot of the incompatibility problems I was having with Vista (including Synergy).
- HyperDav, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use this program at work and at home. Itg great. I found it about a year and a half ago, when it was a bit buggy. Now it works great. I have it running 3 computers at work (one which is a mac). At home I use it to control a computer all the way in the other room which has its video signal output to a TV next to my monitor. I use that setup to watch my Media Center while I work on my pc. Great app!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can use TweakVI to override the UAC.
- evilpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been using this ever since I found it. I have a server running right beside this computer, and it's the perfect thing to have to manage without an extra mouse/keyboard.
