- bambala, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11This is old news. I've tried it and it doesn't work that smoothly as with Pidgin or whatever. And when you do decide to switch back from Google Talk, you will have all your contacts twice in your IM client. It took me a while to delete them from Pidgin.

- aadaam, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Have you ever used a mac ?:) Their official clients aren't as feature-compatible as the official windows ones. Besides, jabber has more extensions than any protocols I believe (like it has a protocol for playing chess etc)

Jabber became the IETF IM standard (like SMTP, FTP, HTTP are for their repsective services), thus deprecating the commercial systems. Thus, the right answer to this problem is to dump AIM, YIM, MSN and ICQ already and encourage your friends to do the same.

- lemur, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2The idea is wrong... you're not chatting "over" Google Talk. Jabber transports are difficult to set up and actually function poorly, so in my book it's not worth the trouble. I love Psi though... nice little messenger that.

Usually service accounts add better service on their dedicated IM apps. Like MSN, Y!, and AIM. From closed networks (like AOL mail in the beginning of the 90s) to global infrastructure (like e-mail today), and from own solutions (newsletters) to standards (RSS). It does the same but it's a standard.
And of course jabber transports existed a few years back. But now PyMSNt is mature enough -it does everything except custom smileys. And now it's advertised for newbies, for non-hardcore geeks if lifehacker's readers are geeks at all. Or use soapbox, which can share basically any windows-compatible files (like: shared presentations), or Xeus.. or.. with XMPP?Jabber (even google talk) you have a LOT of options to choose from.
