- Farkeologist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I don't get it.
iTunes already lets you manage what goes to your iPod and what doesn't. WTF do you need multiple Libraries if you're managing a single one correctly? - echobucket, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Some people are control freaks. I let iTunes manage my music collection totally.. I really want it to appear like a database of music, I could care less what the files look like on disk. Giving up control of files and directory structure seems to be hard for some people. I really don't quite know why.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12For people who have a lot of music in addition to video content, that 30 GB goes pretty darn fast.
- panique, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Uh, just click specific playlists to sync in the preferences.
- ChillyWilly5280, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I keep my music in Apple Lossless for streaming over my home stereo, but my iPod won't hold much at that encoding (about 20% of the library). So I keep a second library of the same music in 128 KBs AAC. That's one reason someone might want to have multiple libraries.
- DocDEB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This also works with iPhoto. Hold while starting iPhoto and you are presented with a dialogue with choices : Quit Create Library... Choose Library...
Handy for keeping your pron collection separate from the family photos. ;) Unless of course your family... never mind. - davidestroy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4OR! Some people have external harddrives that they don't always have hooked up and they make a specific library for when it isn't hooked up so they don't have to scroll through thousands of songs that aren't actually playable.
There's also the chance that two people might want to sync "all music and playlists" to different ipods but don't want to sync the same libraries. Get it? It's there for people who need it. - jonknee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's a lot easier to just have a playlist set up for your iPod or iPods. That's what I do to sync my nano--I have a playlist that I switch out a subset of my music on. Seems a lot easier than rebooting iTunes for a new library.
iTunes stores music really logically by default, so I've found it easiest to just let it do its thing. If I ever need access to the raw MP3 files they are just sitting in the directory structure inside of ~/Music/iTunes/. Can't get much more simple. - kidwithshirt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3consolidate library, god-sent
- BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Say you have two iPods (e.g. a parent's iPod and their child's iPod) and they each have a playlist for their iPod. Don't you need to go into the settings to change which playlist gets synced when you put the other iPod in? I personally don't have two iPods, so I can't really test it. I only use this method so I have a separate collection for all music and separate collection for just my iPod.
- davidestroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sync selected playlist(s) can still be found in the Music syncing preferences for each ipod.
- BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1By use of the word 'wicked,' may I assume you might be from Boston/New England?
- BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1eluusive,
Where is said option to sync to playlists? I think you're thinking of that option on the previous version of iTunes, but this is for version 7. - PabloMac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ DocDEB:
"Hold [Option] while starting iPhoto..." - deanau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A better option for "itunes only" music is it to put them in a playlist, or tag them in "category's"
(see: http://digg.com/apple/Tag_songs_in_iTunes ) - Jumangi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why does it have to be so unintuitive? Why can't they simply put an option right within iTunes so people can switch from one library to another?
- evilspoons, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2My iPod is only 4GB, asshat :P
- Rethcir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Um, I just got one, and what I did was set everything to Manual and just drag and drop all my music into my itunes, and then drag the specific music I want directly onto my ipod. It's pretty easy especially if your music is well organized.
- ldavid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not if you have a 400GB collection of music...
- BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks...haha. I actually plugged my iPod in after...then saw it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And you'd be first in line to get one eh?
- kingfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've set up separate libraries for different people in my family; we all use the same computer and iTunes 7. When you're browsing through your entire library in the CoverFlow view, for example, you only want to see your own CDs. This method works superbly; as simple as iTunes is, it can be confusing for someone who is older and not so used to computers.
- eluusive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There's this cool thing called a "Playlist." You may have heard of them... Anyways you can put a subset of your music in one, give it a title, and tell that playlist to be sync'd with your iPod. Very handy feature.
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2The problem with that is on [some older] Windows machines, iTunes gets sluggish after having too much media. Same thing happens with WMP11 in my experience.
- xcrunner10, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't see why this is necessary. If everyone in your family has an iPod, then they should probably have their own user account in Windows/Mac anyway.
And, iTunes has built-in iPod management settings. - metafore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wicked sweet.
- BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Why? This is particularly good for homes that have one computer to manage more than one iPod. Or...you can use one library to manage your iPod, and the other to manage your entire music collection. Clicking the little check boxes next to songs you want it a real pain.
- nicc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's definitely in v7, at least on OS X.
on the left side, under "devices" is the iPod that is currently plugged in.
click on the iPod in question, and select the "music" tab.
click "sync music" and check "selected playlists"
check the playlist that you want synced to the iPod. - BostonMark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1emFi,
Apple made that help page 12 days after I wrote about it, so don't belittle my HOWTO since Apple's wasn't written at the time. - emFi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Abusing the comment system, but, in summary:
Hold option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) as iTunes launches for a 'chose library' dialogue.
( From Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304447 ) - rspeed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hipster?
- WallnutBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I thought this feature was preeettyy handy for people who {cough} wanna keep their pr0n away from others' eyes.. Buutt when you (like me) set iTunes to sort out your music itself, as in making Artist-->Album folders, aannd then you make a second library, telling it to do the same thing, but in a different Main Folder, iTunes confuses the libraries... Or at least, when you go back to your main library, then add anymore songs, it either won't do anything with the songs or move them into the previous library's music folder..
Or it could just be me being retarded.. Who knows! :p
Also, I found out that iTunes can handle .pdfs... Pretty nifty, but who'd want a loada .pdfs along with their music?!
Meh.. :p - snypa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Good idea, better if you could do this without using the app each time you wanted to switch though, eh.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1How dare you!
- baxtermaddux, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6i have over 200gb of music in itunes.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0if that dumb hipster dishonest fagboy at apple would release a 200gb ipod this would not be needed...but alas....
- aplardi, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3This feature and the transfer files "hack" are what enable me to have all the music just the way I want it on all my machines and with multiple removable drives. I highly suggest you give this library management style a try if you have a plethora of media.
The transfer files thing i'm referring to is this: http://digg.com/apple/iTunes_101_Using_iTunes_7_iPod_to_Transfer_All_of_Your_Media_The_MacCast - jman8888, on 10/12/2007, -16/+1
Why would you need two? Ipods have 30 gb
