"If you have received an Instant Message (IM) warning you that you can be easily identified and face legal penalties, it is the result of our recent victory in the lawsuit brought by the Recording Association of America (RIAA). The RIAA has elected to utilize Grokster's built-in tools to send these messages to our users. As you know, Grokster does not have any control over what content (be it files or IM messages) its users exchange. The RIAA has chosen to become one of our users, and to use our software to combat illegal file sharing. If you have any complaints, please direct them to the RIAA (www.riaa.org). For more information concerning Grokster's IM functionality, click here.
On April 25th, the U.S. District Court granted Grokster’s request for summary judgment, denying the motion picture and recording industries request to shut Grokster down. "

Yup. They're cutting edge over there.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3oh noes! my ip addy! *watches FBI arrest neighbor whose WEP I cracked*

The United States Supreme Court unanimously confirmed
that using this service to trade copyrighted material is illegal.
Copying copyrighted motion picture and music files
using unauthorized peer-to-peer services is illegal and is
prosecuted by copyright owners.
There are legal services for downloading music and movies.
This service is not one of them.
YOUR IP ADDRESS IS 66.249.71.7 AND HAS BEEN LOGGED.
Don't think you can't get caught. You are not anonymous. - ELiTe185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3+digg
In the off-chance that they ARE actually collecting IP addresses, then the more people viewing this page solely because it is on digg, the better.
But, like it matters anyway. How does visiting the site prove that I use the software (which I don't) or that I committed copyright infringement? It doesn't. - kanago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is stupid, period. Nothing they can get you for for going there. My guess is it was a clever hack, or a prank.
As far as you guys that think your safe with proxies, what are you smoking? Proxies DON'T simply save you, they just slow down someone trying to hunt you out. Don't just think your safe by using one. - karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ugh, most diggers probably do have pirated ***** anyways, so it won't make a difference :(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm logging the IP of the server. NOW WHOS BOSS?
- laughterkillsme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@zelphi
It's an implied threat, which is something that is taken seriously. If I were to point a loaded gun at you and tell you to stfu I could go to jail for assault. (You don't have to pull the trigger for it to be called assault).
Nevertheless ... visiting a website means nothign .. going to amazon.com and looking at plasma tv's doen't mean i'm buying one .. so stop crying kids it's ok. - BileFroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"""Since my IP is being longed for allegedly going to that site to find illegal stuff, I'm creating this comment to prove all I did was click a link on Digg!" posted by automagically (0) at 01:30 AM 1/02/06""
Ditto! - ionix18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2For all the lamers posting here saying "I WAS ON DIGG" please note the following facts:
The http log will also include the referer. In that case: http://www.digg.com/software/Grokster_Scare_Tactics
Also, visiting a website does not imply anything illegal
Hence, even downloading the software is not illegal because you are not illegally downloading a copyrighted software (Grokster in that case)
Furthermore, using the software is not illegal neither.
Where it gets illegal is if you SEND a copyrighted song over it...
So stop ***** in your pants this is very lame and people will think you are retarted. - bornhj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Uhoh, they got the IP address of one of Google's Web Accelerator servers.
RUN GOOGLE! RUN! - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That amuses me, honestly it does.
I go to that site and it tells me my IP has been logged, presumably because I've been using the service to download copyrighted material.
Never touched it before in my life, so if this is some RIAA attempt to get more people, they're going to have a hard time.
Of course, odds are it ISN'T some RIAA orchestrated attempt to catch people out, and just some guy managing to hack the front page of the site for a bit of a laugh. - bradford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What a shameless way to scare people.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1To all you idiots out there that think you're protected by a proxy.... go ahead and continue to think so. Perhaps you should consider some computer forensics courses before you go spouting off at the mouth.
In short, if you think a proxy is protecting you, you better not be doing anything illegal.. ha... - secondmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1These people are retarded. +Digg
- OOTay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow thats lame... havent even been there before...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since my IP is being longed for allegedly going to that site to find illegal stuff, I'm creating this comment to prove all I did was click a link on Digg!
- drag0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Whats Grokster? lol.
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just ***** myself laughing.
- djamie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shame on you 'gamerzworld', now I've implicated two innocent parties (Google and the Ravens). I am calling the riaa at this moment to confess. I must do the honorable thing.
* Ring
* "Hello, this the RIAA hot line, how may we help you?"
* "I want to confess"
* "One moment, while I start the recorder"
* "You may start your confession, you miserable grokster.com visitor"
"ummh", oh I know, "Google made me do it"
* Click!
Wow, now I feel better, confession is good for the soul.
Now if only I could spoof the caller-id.
"Sorry Google, but I do so like the Ravens". - LoganKriete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Another fake, sarcastic parody like everyone else is saying:
oh NOEs!!!111one thewy've liggged by IP addtress!!! they're gonna KILL me now!!! even though this si the first TIMEi've been tot he site!!!!two
----
Honestly, this is ridiculous. That's like someone going into a Best Buy, looking at an Xbox 360, then having Best Buy call the police and arrest him for trying to steal "valuable merchandise" (and you all know why I chose Best Buy as my example store... :-D).
+digg - F00b4r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Am I the only one here who has never heard of Grokster beyond all this lawsuit *****? Then again, I skipped Kazaa and Napster too.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GUYS WHO THINK THERE IS NO SENDING CODE IN THE WEBSITE... DUHHHHHHHHHHHH
ITS PHP not HTML of JAVASCRIPT... notice there is no code obtaining the IP as well... ITS SERVER SIDE WORK - gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh no! The server knew the IP address it was serving and logged that information! No server has ever done that before! Ahhhhh!!!
- mcfo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Huh? Dumb on Grok. But worth a digg in case the front page hasn't been hacked.
- gheide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1BTW, since I use a MAC, grokster doesn't run on mac... I visited grokster.com with a mac... i guess that's illegal...
- simX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"There are legal services for downloading music and movies. This service is not one of them."
O RLY? - Nameless1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LOL bornhj!
"Uhoh, they got the IP address of one of Google's Web Accelerator servers.
RUN GOOGLE! RUN!"
indeed, i can see the headlines now - MPAA sues Google for using Grokster to warez stuff. - TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1lol they got my ip wrong o_O
- clevershark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Oh, I'm shocked that my (company proxy) IP address is now in their logs! After all it's such a *difficult* thing to do!
So now they'll have a very large number of IP addresses logged from people who don't use their service at all but just popped in for a look at their warning page. THAT'll be useful! - nogg3r5, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, in theory, if most of the people who use digg go to the grokster page, then hit refresh a few times, we can make there log files so huge that they give up and find something worthwhile to do.
- EatenByAGrue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ha! I couldn't figure out what on earth this could be about. For some reason, I thought it said "Groklaw," not "Grokster". Imagine the strange look on my face trying to figure out why Groklaw would even care what my IP is! :-D
- numba1xclusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Since my IP is being longed for allegedly going to that site to find illegal stuff, I'm creating this comment to prove all I did was click a link on Digg!" posted by automagically (0) at 09:31 AM 1/02/06"
K me too. Ditto number 9.

- panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ootay - they have no sending code in the source code, no worries. And i sure they dont have acess to the log files.
Ever written a server-side app? Apparently not. - fbiss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what, that cant sue you for looking at the site , especially your first time ever. I have never been to that site before this was on digg.
- jawsomemax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0while tracking "my ip" it says i am in australia...

- gundammman2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is so stupid. Logged my ass.
- Illidan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder where the RIAA learned to emulate Mafia Mob Bosses?
They're sure doing a good job of it. - shelby1076, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ditto times a million
