- Metalmoon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+35or maybe you're attracted to men
- MikeonTV, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28Conan O'Brian has been doing this for years.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25this is way cool. very interesting project.
now, i'm not trying to be mean or anything, but i have to say that most, if not all, of the faces you have to choose from are well below the curve aesthetically relative to traditional societal standards for attractiveness--probably because most students involved with the project are hardcore nerds (it's ok, i'm one too). but what's really interesting is that if you take 2 completely different "unattractive" faces and average them, you get more median facial features, and the resulting face actually seems to be far more attractive than either of the faces you started with. in fact, i've found that if you take all of the girls faces and average them, you get a surprisingly hot female face--try it for yourself and see.
it should be noted that we're naturally repelled by the body odors of people with highly similar phenotypes to ourselves, conversely, people with heterogeneous phenotypes to ourselves send positive olfactory signals making us more subconsciously attracted to them (they proved this on an episode of BBC horizon). this is an evolutionary trait designed to prevent inbreeding and encourage phenotypic variation in a population. psychologically, we may also be attracted to potential mates that look very different from us, as that is another indication of contrasting phenotypes.
so if you want good looking children, marry someone with completely different features from you. - fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13Play around with it enough and you can make all those ugly chicks actually make a hot average.

All the Women together.
She's actually pretty attractive. - hmmdar, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Your links don't work, there is a comment on the site that says that your merges only last 10min
- luke16, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8It funny how mixing a male and a female produces a hot chick that is hotter than all the others....
- wiirdo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8I'm sure it would be cool if I could access the website.
- tradwolley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Site is dead, and I fear a mirror won't do it right.
- insanelygreat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5If Digg improved its abysmal search system a submitter could reasonably be expected to verify that the article they're submitting hasn't been posted before. Without that you really can't fault the submitter.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5they ought to have cached them since there's only a fixed number of combinations. it's a huge waste of cpu cycles to keep recomputing these image combinations i imagine.
- DaBrainiac, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I remember this from awhile ago. http://digg.com/general_sciences/I_created_a_woman_so_beautiful_she_made_me_melt
- BarryChuckle, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3the sum of the parts...
- fpcyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Duggmirror will not work in this situation.
- wassim2k, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4I fell in love with the one I made out of four girls.
- DarkWhitty, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I just took the 2 girls who i found most attractive put them together and now im in love... She actually looks rather similar to my high school crush.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i don't think it's just the skin tone/texture. i think you're right that it is certainly a contributing factor to that effect, but even blending multiple faces that have good skin you see a huge improvement in attractiveness based on facial features. if it were just skin tones that are an improvement i would certainly recognize it as that. and after you blend more than 2-3 faces the skin tons aren't really improving anymore, but 20~30 face averages still look considerably more attractive than 10-15 face averages. in fact, it's a linear trend that continues even after the skin tones become artificial-looking.
- Utopian, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I personally think that average faces are more attractive regardless of skin tone. Anyway, you might find this interesting:
http://www.uni-regensburg.de/Fakultaeten/phil_Fak_II/Psychologie/Psy_II/beautycheck/english/schemaanpassungen/schemaanpassungen.htm - slazer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2i was watching this science show or something on tv one time (yeah, vague, i know) and it was about how the human brain decides what is attractive. apparently, it's the average of all the faces you have seen of that sex. that's in regards to eye spacing, size, shape, nose distance from mouth. that's what this site and your comment reminded of.
- .Steven, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4How can I use this for pr0n? [/sarcasm]
- Anteros, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1It was down last time as well...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+6yes, probably, yes, no, no, yes, after some beers, yes, yes, no, after many beers, yes, no, no, hell no, yes, yes, no, after some beers, no, yes, yes.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Annnnnnd dead.
- ConceptJunkie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, all I can say is that my wife must have a very heterogeneous phenotype to mine. Opposites really do attract!
- lukes, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Look up a definition of sarcasm.
- antdude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Or use "dupe" option.
- smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1last time was blog spam and i couldn't even access the app. this time it's linked directly to the app and i actually got to play with it for several hours last night. you just gotta catch these things before or after they hit the front page. you can always bookmark it for later. it's pretty cool to mess around with.
- chrismuss, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2the invention of breast implants, maybe?
- Punisher2K, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Bye. Thanks for playing.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Pick 8 to 10 of the do-able girls and average them out. Turns out to be a beautiful flawless chick. Probably the hottest chick I've ever seen.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Conan O'Brien didn't overlay pictures. His people took a nose, chin and hair from Tom Cruise and eyes, ears and mouth from Nicole Kidman.
Which, turned out to be ugly mutations. - bitcloud, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2The increasing level of attractiveness that most of "faceresearch.org" hedges their information on is really not due to proportions, but due to the averaged skin tone which removes blemishes, off colourations etc...
You end up with healthy skin, and healthy skin is attractive, often in spite of strange proportions or asymmetry...
While they blend skin tones, they're not providing a very good experiment. A better experiment would be to average the proportions, but keep the original skin. - smackhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1i don't think it's a bandwidth problem. they should probably have just cached the images since there's only a fixed number of face combinations. but it seems to be set up to mix the faces in real-time, which is probably very CPU intensive.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Or average the luminosity of the skin but keep the textures intact.
- shablog, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1is down =(
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I found all the diesels and averaged them out to find the next miss USA.
- alecsstan, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1it's a fact man. human race is refining to serve the evolutionary trend. beauty plays a key role. beautifull people are payed more, have more friends, and have higher chances to procreate with other beautifull specimen.( :)) that's the steve irwin in me ...god rest his soul. ) if your chanches of survival in the society depended on for example a big nose, you would see more people with big noses. i mean.. why do you think women now have larger breasts (talking statisticaly) then women in the 18 hundreds. i predict that with the lost of inhibition regarding sex in the cultures around the world we're gonna see bigger penises in the next century or in the ccentury after that.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1This is a model for a race of Atomic UberMensch.
- stampsrule, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0why is that if the average of 2 people is a hotter person, but yet people in north america is not getting hotter?
- theoneskee, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0I think I made a Gooback...
- ElitistSnob, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0***** Erectus - gay man with a woody. Learn it...live it...be it.
- filcreative, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Buried, page takes to long to load, It's like I'm back on dail-up and I promised myself I would never do that agian. Look what you made me do.
- HiImMikeCastro, on 10/10/2007, -8/+5OK now i KNOW this was on digg 6 months ago...hell they even had it on diggnation this trend of recurring articles is really annoying me
- godnews, on 01/21/2008, -3/+0i don't think it's a bandwidth problem. they should probably have just cached the images since there's only a fixed number of face combinations. but it seems to be set up to mix the faces in real-time, which is probably very CPU intensive. http://games.gwafi.com/cat15.html http://games.gwafi.com/cat16.html http://games.gwafi.com/cat17.html http://games.gwafi.com/cat18.html http://games.gwafi.com/cat19.html
- aflaks, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0terrible website, cool idea but horrible website. BURRIED.
- peterjmag, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0Agreed. I understand that the Digg effect plays a role here, but why do people even bother putting bandwidth intensive apps like this online if their servers can't handle the traffic?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+0I always knew *+Oriental == Hawt!
- Kallius, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Server down. How surprising. Buried.
- zweben, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4All males averaged: http://www.faceresearch.org/tomcat/psychomorph/uploads/img162652.jpg;img162653.tem
All people: http://www.faceresearch.org/tomcat/psychomorph/uploads/img162698.jpg;img162699.tem
All females: http://www.faceresearch.org/tomcat/psychomorph/uploads/img162772.jpg;img162773.tem
Interesting to see the transition. I think the average of all the people still looks masculine though. - tmedesign, on 10/10/2007, -6/+1http://www.duggmirror.com
