- searchengine, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Exclusive screenshots of what Google's payment system, "Certified by Google" will look like in search results:
http://www.postbubble.com/2006/06/12/google-does-payments-too/ - masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I regularly use:
Google Search
Google Maps
GMail w/ Chat (NOT Google Talk, but GMail chat...)
Google News (This isn't part of Google Search, IMO)
Google Calculator ("90 knots in mph", etc...)
Sometimes Froogle
Sometimes Google Translator
There are many parts of Google that aren't worthless. - dH2K, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"(why would I want someone else to host my email again?)" - Because you don't want to be a SysOp for your entire life. There is much more important things sometimes in one's life than to check the exploits / upgrades / backup-restore processes, 24/7 mainteance, etc. I vote for GMail. My E-Mail life is 90% faster & easier since they started their service.
- smellinator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6> "Google projects other than search and maybe gmail have been total failures."
I think their Adsense program is a HUGE success. I don't think you can call it a total failure, if it's bringing in the bulk of their $6 BILLION of revenue. I wish I had such failures.
Note, search and gmail bring in NOTHING (except for the advertising, mostly handled by AdSense).
Other "stealth" programs that *you* may consider failures are investing in Mozilla so that Google search is included in the header (yes, Google pays for that, and gets returns when they get you to use it so that they can show you an ad.)
I dunno. Saying a blanket statement like "Google projects other than search and maybe gmail have been total failures" seems a bit naive! - Crimsoneer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Jarda, thats really not true...Google Translator is used a hell of a lot, Google Earth and Maps is also used enormously. Most other products are still in beta. The only real total failure is gChat, and well, with gmail popularity going up that could also do rather well. I don't think this is going to replace paypal anytime soon, but hey, maybe one day.
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Take over Mars too?
- Bdog2g2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I think there mission is to "Organize all the worlds money..." into their accounts
Good work G. - CasaMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Total failures? Maybe in the short therm.. It takes time till google weaves all their little apps together and it comes clear what synergy these apps can have.. And who said Google base was going to be an ebay killing app?
//ontopic
Marked as inaccurate..
Google's mission statement is still "to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful" - AdipicAcid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I have a nasty suspicion that you are equating "I don't use it" with "total failure." Replacing my home email server with a gmail address has been one of the best things I've ever done. One less set of apps to track security patches on. Google Notebook shows some promise as well. I also pretty much use Maps over Mapquest at this point, as Maps is slightly less out of date. While none of these things are the success that the search page is, I would hardly call any of them "total" failures.
- sparton, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Its amazing how much crap i catch myself using google for. Google earth to stalk people. Google images to masturbate to. Google search.......well do i really need to go on. When is google love doll being released to the public?
- jmccorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I like this new mission. Unifications and a common interface is good from my perspective. (Except, until it ends up limiting choice/creativity/options.)
- bram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The biggest obstacle in creating an e-commerce site is setting up the online payment system. It is pretty complicated to set up a credit card processor and most third party processors (including PayPal) are a bit awkward because you have to leave the site. Google’s payment system will be a hit if they make it very easy to integrate into a website and allow business owners to easily administer it. I’ve used Gmail for domains and it is not quite there for businesses, so my bet is that their payment system is lacking.
- Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why would one want to use gmail... hmm... let me think... Because I've never seen an email service get spam out of my inbox as effectively, it's tagging system is incredibly convenient and easy to use, and it integrates with my IM client well (Google Talk). I'm on the verge of converting ALL my emails to gmail.
Their new google trends tool is neat too. - woodcoxcb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Those images don't look as real as you are lead to believe. I think that Google has had some majorly successful products, and some-- well-- not so successful. Calendar and Gmail, and their integration is the product I use most, followed by Gtalk... I really like Google Desktop and I can't wait to see what they are going to do with payment services. Integration with Gmail & all their other products, AdSense earnings go to your account, the possibilities are huge!
- larryparis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2MOre options are always better. Some stuff Google has odne I have really liked(calendar, gmail and talk, desktop and search) a few I haven't (froogle, reader). But hey they throw something at hte wall and if it sticks great if not move on. Personally i like that.
I agree completely with bram, the biggest hurdle to starting a web business is the payment system. If i can farm that out at a reasonable price to Google great. - hlampert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm currently a big fan of Desktop V4 and Google Notebook has been useful as well.
- Mahstah, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No one has mentioned Google Earth, another huge success by Google. If you watch any of the big news channels (Fox, CNN) you'll notice that they use Google Earth in their broadcasts to familiarize viewers with the areas they report on.
More power to Google, they are a great company providing indisposable services to people worldwide. Their strive to better organize products for people is just another example of the good work they do. - searchengine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those are supposed to be internal pictures of some samples that Google was considering, I don't think they are fakes.
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Google Base, Google Reader, Google Web Accelerator (eek!), and Google Talk are all failures.
HOWEVER, the Google Talk that is implemented into GMail is NOT a failure. - jldugger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't see how you can call Google Talk a failure and then claim the web based interface isn't. The latter required the former to exist.
- three60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This article doesn't mention anything about how Google is actually planning on organizing everything. No digg.
- ojk007, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4There jusst tryin for an internet monopoly
- soptimization, on 05/17/2009, -0/+0Yeah those images don't look real, I think Google has had some good products but sometimes they do some bad ones.
http://www.azam.net/affiliate-program-management/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one welcome our...
Forget it, its google. Again. - aeroplanedigger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Gmail, Google Maps, and Google Search are all very succeesful, not to mention their adservices. I think it will be a while before they even try to make their other products big though, they are still becoming a big company, expanding into the wider tech field.
- cosmotron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What was the old one?
- IWilliams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0To me it seems that google is trying to take everything on the internet and "googlize" it. Google has one of the best, if not the best searches today. That is the one thing they are good at, and in my opinion they should stick with that.
- Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6Yeah... And Google Base was going to kill ebay. Google projects other than search and maybe gmail have been total failures. Of course with all the indoctrination going on this site, this is the type of statement you will seldom read here.
- paulmdx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Have those images been qualified? They look like fakes to me.
- MellerTime, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1I agree 100%. I don't even use GMail (why would I want someone else to host my email again?), so we're talking just their search product. Some of the others have been 'cool', but not particularly useful. Google Earth is nice, and the fact that they have its data in Maps is cool. But honestly, how often are either helping me in my day-to-day life?
I've said it before and I'll say it again... If it didn't have the multi-colored Google logo on it, no one would give a crap.
