- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37i prefer my sketchup on sfrench sfries.
- snupples, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24The download link on that page was incorrect as of 10 seconds ago. I'll email them.
In the meantime the correct link is: http://sketchup.google.com/download.html (no www) - courvoisierxo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I just created a model of my apartment in Japan... took 3 seconds.
- Bigcat1021, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15”BAM outta nowhere comes SketchUp.”
I think you mean, "BAM outta 43 DAYS AGO comes SketchUp."

:P - allenu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Great! Can I use it? I need a model for my bathroom.
- PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Video of how it works, look pretty easy.

- mikexstudios, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You mean you created a rectangular prism?
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Altruistic? You do realize they're still selling the Pro version for $495, and the free version is not licensed for use in commercial environments (just personal use). So this makes a lot of sense - get individuals hooked, and have companies pay money to use it. Among the myriad of other potential master plans for this.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5keyhole was cool, but you had to pay for it.
- WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I used it A LOT as an Architecture Major - it's really intuitive and very smooth, not to mention how easy it is to create something right off the bat. I actually prefer it to AutoDesk Revit, a much more expensive program. Anyways, I'm glad I didn't buy a lifetime liscence - not just because it's free now but because I am now a Computer Science major.
Nerds rule. - dayquil, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7anyone paying attention to google's previous buyouts knew it was coming. 'twas a matter of time.
the thing that repeatedly impresses me is that google keeps buying this terrific software that I've never ever heard of. Granted, I'm not looking very hard. And I'm not in the target market, generally. But that's the cool thing, they're keen on creating market. Like google earth - did anyone really give a ***** about keyhole who wasn't in some kind of industry that would make use of it for commercial purposes? Probably not - but give it away and make it do fun things and bam, there's your market. Same goes for sketchup, ultimately a rather small percentage of the people using it are probably going to be any kind of drafting professionals, they'll just be making their house show up on google earth.
Say what you will about google and their (goddamned) betas, but they have a very deep, very involved master plan and I don't think they're necessarily losing focus, at least not to the level their critics seem to think. This is all ultimately about information accessibility. - kramit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3hmm.. i think i may see a prob with being able to model your own house and upload it to google earths database.
Who is to say that my house isnt a scale replica of the sphinx? - rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The video on the site looks cool, but it seems like a bit of a stretch that anyone will do it. They make it look easy but it really takes someone semi-skilled to make something like that.
- dude3609, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think im sticking with http://blender3d.org/ for my 3d modelling, or quark3d(similar to sketchup but better) for quick and easy modelling. Both of which are free.
- Ninjamonk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3good news shame there does not seem to be an export format for the models for the free version.
but hey more useful for learning it on. - PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Pretty cool you can export a model of your home to Google Earth.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The interface for this app is incredibly intuitive. Wow. App of the year.
- the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Im guessing its the move to universal binary format which has slowed mac development for now. Its happening everywhere, its not just google.
- soimless, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Is it just me or did anyone else just get really really really confused? 3d rendering software....Google?
- kickarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This isn't suppose to replace AutoCad or similar products. It's considered a rough "sketch" of what you want your product to look like. Although you can do some pretty amazing things it is not on the same level as AutoCad.
What's great about this product though is that it's VERY easy to use. As to why it's been used ALOT in the bit-tech modding community for some time now. With a wonderful list of parts that you can import. I know because I've used it to design a stereo equipment rack cabinet, a computer case and a house. So there's quite a bit you can do, just takes time and patience and a creative mind.
It's great though that they are making it for free, well a lite version at least. This will get even more people interested in the product. If they want to go pro after learning it, it's really not that bad of a pricepoint. I think if more companies did the same you'd have a cornucopia of products that people will learn and most likely, eventually, BUY and NOT pirate.
Google's got the idea. Good for them. And it's nice to see them take the initiative and go to companies or visa versa and setup something like this.
Digg - Bhima, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It says comng soon
- aaronlidman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3very awesome how they're incorporating it into G-Earth and all that.
- evilTak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Don't you mean sfreedom sfries?
- skago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've used SketchUp a lot for preliminary design in architecture. Its an awesome tool to communicate space relationships and mass models to clients. I usually take an aerial photo of the proposed site, pull up some quick masses of existing buildings, and then place a mass for the new building. The best part is being able to animate the file and export as a video. Client faces light up when they see their project represented this way. And now that Revit 9 imports SketchUp files, I can even reuse my design's to start the construction document process.
- inactive, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2I didn't even know Google bought SketchUp. I was using SketchUp 5 about a year ago (can't remember).. It's a great tool, very easy to learn.
- AD7GD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A year or so ago I watched the SketchUp videos and tried the demo. The 3D input interface is so far beyond any other 3D CAD program that it gives you hope that there's actually a future for user interface design. Their four hour time limited demo (up to eight hours these days, I think) sounded ridiculously short until you realize that in four hours a complete novice could easily model a large structure. You could spend four hours with Blender figuring out how to make a cone sitting on a sphere.
- myfanwy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2it doesn't really compare to revit - sketchup is more for generating and rendering 3d images of objects, and while revit can be used for this, it's more for parametric building modelling, analysis and design (with 3rd party analysis programmes). it excels at generating a bill of materials and construction drawings, but i don't think i'd like to use it for anything artistic/non-engineering
- shikaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I am sure that there will be some kind of monitoring. Still, good point. Maybe they will have a voting system like digg comments and after a certain number of complaints it will be checked.
- drizek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Count your blessings. They arent even making a linux version.
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't really see how size has anything to do with it. Just model your invention as if it were the size of a house, then zoom out.
- darkyoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Me, I prefer eating shot dogs.
- PrimoTurbo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If you ever tried 3dmax or anything similar then you would understand how easy SketchUp looks.
In case you guys want to download it go here - http://sketchup.google.com/download.html (19.11mb) - nitsuj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Somebody should set the usability police on Blender developers. Blender is powerful for sure but the interface is a fiddly-ass bean-picking rainman nightmare. I recently evaluated Blender and Sketchup. Sketchup was actually fun to use (yes, really) while Blender nearly had me launching my PC through the nearest wall. Which is funny really because one of my eval tests was to model windows within a wall.
- stormmind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It can only export to Google Earth. Makes sence for them (fill their database for 3d-view) but means this thing is useless for me. I can imagine making a model of my house if I can export it and do something with it (like making a fps arena or something) but I don't care about putting it up on Google Earth. And there's quite a price difference between the free and the pro version... =/
- eridius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1In most cases the move to Universal Binary doesn't slow development by as much as you seem to think. My guess is Google simply has more resources to spend on the windows version than the Mac version, though they are (or at least were - I assume they still are) building up their Mac team.
- shikaga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, I agree that the lack of exportability is a bit of a shame, especially as this program will likely be used for 3D game modelling etc. And paying >$300 is something that an average modder is not gonna be able to do. But I have used both blender and SketchUp and I have to admit that I prefer SU. Perhaps it is not that SU needs to allow the free version to export to support the non-buisness community but that Blender needs to improve it's interface.
- kevmann16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any notice this happend just after AutoCad 2007 was released with new a toolkit very simlar to stekch up, I think google relised that the personal user is a better market and know that the pro's that may of brought this will just get the AutoCad2007 just like my company has.
I convinced them Sketch Up was cool especially for site plans so we were about to buy it however the new autoCad features were released and since we have a subscription with Autodesk we are not buying sketch up. - opnotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1O.k.. dazzle If your renders are done directly from within Sketchup... well that isn't too bad really. I can see the more-or-less geek community getting into having some pictures of their ideas. I can see it becoming *the* tool to do it with in fact. I'm not trying to be punky here really. In fact I really don't know what I was expecting in thinking that Google would open up 3D so much that it would upset the very established 3D industry. *this is not sarcasm*! !!
- tidejwe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That video convinced me to dl it!
- trisomy21, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7sketchup & smustard snatch
- jezmck, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Many people use SU for other purposes, like fast accurate modelling and testing of design concepts.
See my SketchUp Components Collection for example: http://scc.jazzle.co.uk/ - breakneckridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Macintosh version: Coming Soon"
D'OH! I want it now! - Rob5246, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not to be greedy or anything, but it said free. I downloaded it, and it's pretty cool, but I only have a 480 minute trial version. Did I download the wrong one?
- nyls, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have used Sketchup quite a bit. It is easy enough to use and when this free version takes off it is going to give us Google Virtual Earth!
http://www.software4free.org/3d.html has a comparison of : Blender, Art of Illusion, Persistance of Vision (POV-ray), 3D Canvas from Amabilis, Wings 3D, Anim8tor and DAZ | Studio; but not Sketchup as it was paid software until now. - szembek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great. A nice solid free tool. It took me 42 days to notice it though :(
- lkallion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2And then you can have virtual neighbor wars, when his fence is one meter on your side...
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is what I've been talking about - if this were a Yahoo product it would only be for Windows XP - Google keeps the Mac and Linux platforms in mind.
- piratemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Awesome. Who wants to see my house:
http://glosoli.blogspot.com/2006/05/my-house-in-sketchup.html
And here's how to put your house in Google Earth:
