- GrahamStw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11> After how they dissed the Chinese people...
Yeah. Imagine obeying the laws of a country just so they can supply their search engine to a population that is more than four times the size of the US*
Clearly it would be much better for everyone if companies could just ignore any inconvenient local laws and supply whatever they like, where ever they like. (As long as they promise not to be evil obviously).
* 1,306 million in China versus 296 million in the US, since you ask. - ahill7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Its gonna be just as good as google calendar. Oh wait...When was that coming out again? They are getting too big. Some of their stuff is good, but they need to lay off the speed and just develop one product really really well instead of developing a million products that are stuck in Beta for eternity.
- Keir, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6lol this is the most amusing thing I've heard all day.
I can't believe this line...
"in a possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business - desktop software"
I'm sorry, but thats just not going to happen, mainly because of a lack of popular software.
Also, OS X has a far greater chance of being a problem to Windows than "Google Linux" will have.
And lets face it, Google isn't exactly renound for their design skills. I expect I could design the interface better than Google could ever dream of. Not that it would be that hard :) - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4""Eh crap, why does it have to be Linux based? You can't play any good video games in Linux."
Doom 3 runs native in Linux"
He said Good. I can run around in my house with the light off and only having a flashlight. - umedone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It amazes me how short sighted people here really are. Comments like this is gonna kill Google and stuff...come on, Google is developing something new and I'm cool with that. If You can't say anything creative like why this is hilarious or why they need not to do this, maybe it's better to keep it to yourself.
- grayBot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4please please don't do this:
Future Headline: Onslaught of Ignorant Comments make Digg obsolete
Really I mean, I got almost 0 useful information out of these comments...whats happening...please don't make me stick solely to slash dot.
1. this is very speculative article, all we know is Google is working on something based on Ubuntu - that's it.
2. Why is it that after google maps --- yea google is the bestest ever , and now after google video --- boo everything google makes sucks..they suck at design ???? ....
I just don't get this type of knee-jerk reaction
Clearly their business model is simple, fast, clean, and lite free services that should be able to generate ad revenue.... google news was on such service that was not able to generate any add revenue but nevertheless is still very useful despite being very *lite*
Google video is also in this vein ...its the Business model stupid! allow the content to producers to set their own pricing or provide free video in an easily searchable context...yes the interface sucks... but what website provides more reliable free streaming video that can be freely downloaded in a variety of formats???
Google in china... there is no debate... they clearly took the best realistic approach -profit or no profit -, it is not fair to a Chinese citizen to deprive him of so much information just because you dont agree w/ his government, for Google to boycott china simply because of their gov, would be grossly unfair to average Internet user in china.
as for Google as a business... any comparisons to the dot com bubble are absolutely ridiculous and just makes you look very ignorant when it comes to economics. Google makes billions of dollars in real money, not speculative money -real money. This was simply not the case before. The PEG ratio of their stock is still very conservative, if you are looking for hyped companies look at bio and nanotech and china - not Google.
Yes maybe google would take a big hit if a newer and better advertising technology is developed, but so far they are a cash making machine something simply not at all indicative of a bubble.
so what does any of this have to do with the article.....well very little ....i was just trying to respond to the irrelevant knee-jerk comments.
Yea maybe Goobuntu will really suck, but it will still be free, fast, and lite and have some sort of integration w/ other google services, so who is exactly is losing here ?
When a billion dollar company is *supporting* free *open source* software , why are we complaining ? Are we angry that engineers working in GASP a big corporation may actually produce something useful ? Do we think they have an evil plan to steal of information and give it to the government ?
Are we pissed off that these OSes may one day become simpler and user friendly enough so that computer illiterate people in the third world will be able to benefit from free usable software.
My take on this is - Open source movement again gets support from Internet giant, software monopoly wall crumbles alittle more - good. - Rajio, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2you really want to use an OS published by an ad company?
- nolaf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4This is gonna kill Google. They need not to do this.
- thejokell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2caldroun "Please people, let the Chinese-Google thing go! The Chinese people can still go to google.com... the Chinese version is the only one censored. jeez."
Actually, they can't. The Chinese government blocks access to Google.com (and all other google variants). They can only get to the Chinese version. - loginname, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Gooslax

Like MS cannot beat Google in search, Google cannot beat MS in OS. (at least not in five-ten years) - munroe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's astounding that such a revered technology site houses such a large collection of non-tech users.
I'm making this assumption based on the comments previous to mine, but it really seems like nobody here has even TRIED an alternative operating system. I've been doing this computer thing for about 16 years now, and 15 of those has been with Microsoft. Various versions of Windows, and a few different versions of DOS. I tinkered with Apple back in the 5 1/4 floppy era, but was never really impressed. Last year I migrated to Ubuntu, and I've never looked back. Any detractors on this site are so completely full of themselves and Internet hyperbole, that they are overlooking the most important aspect of this story.
Google is throwing yet more money at open-source; how can this be anything but good? Google will create their own version of Ubuntu, but they're not going to replace it. All this will do is foster more development from bigger companies(games included, nitwits), who will create Linux versions of all your favourite Windows apps. Not that you need them, since Ubuntu ships with numerous free alternatives, which in most cases do a better job than their paid-for brethren.
And to all you KDE nuts...relax, I'm sure Google will provide a flavour of their OS with KDE supported. It not...then just download it and install it yourself, it doesn't take much more than opening the package manager and searching for KDE.
The China thing is a non-issue, because anyone who is upset about it doesn't understand business, and moreso, doesn't understand China. It's ILLEGAL to provide the information that Google is restricting. Google is not a human rights organization, nor are they freedom fighters. They do search, and ads, and quite frankly they do both very well. Ignoring the Chinese market because you have to filter some results would be ludicrous. I'll let you in on a little secret...they do it in the US too..
http://www.sethf.com/anticensorware/general/google-censorship.php
Contrary to popular belief, Google is not your best friend that promised never to betray you. They're a massive company that is doing many things right, and this OS is just another smart move. - dfsiii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Notice how the article really doesn't have much fact to it, just a lot of stating the implications of what a decision like that would mean...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wasn't there a time when we were all expecting and excited for Google to release an OS. Now with all the recent bad press Google has received they've gone from gold to dirt within a couple moths and now nobody thinks Google OS is a good idea. It's funny how fast these things change.
- drosdin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Google the Coloring book!
Google the T-Shirt!
Google the Lunch Box!
Google the FLAMETHROWER!! (The kids just love this one).
So... how does this make Google money? Are they going to put adds on the desktop? Or use it to track my computer use as well as my internet use the way they do through their search engine? Or is it simply a cheep merchandizing stunt that simmilar to those employed by used car dealerships in an attempt to get my attention?
My guess is that the article is closer to the truth when it speculates that it's an internal thing. Nothing, no matter how non evil it is, will be done by a company unless it relates to the bottom line. - ArthurSucks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This has GOT to be fake. It's too funny not to be. "The origin of the word 'Goobuntu' is not clear, though it does not appear in online Zulu dictionaries." I can make this, I'll take my Ubuntu wallpaper and change it to a Google wallpaper. DONE!
- gusto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"It's possible that it's just one of the toys Googleplex engineers play with on Fridays... It could be for wider deployments on the company's own desktops...but still for internal use only."
Lots of speculation going on, but nothing to back up the "possible bid to take on Microsoft in its core business" mentioned in the first paragraph. - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"The origin of the word 'Goobuntu' is not clear, though it does not appear in online Zulu dictionaries." - The Register
Not only does that sentence not make any sense, but if they can't figure out where the name came from they are freaking idiots.
People really need to stop submitting stories from The Register. If all the fake stories weren't enough, how poorly the ones with a little truth in them are written should be. The Register is crap. If you want to submit a story link to a more reliable source. - loginname, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GooPIS

Can you give it a gold tint instead of the white wallpaper it really hurts my eyes at night. and how long does it take to put ad's in a open source OS? - gluon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is it just me or is there an article about a Google OS every other day?
- pickybugger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This will suck in about a million ways...way to go Google!
- xutopia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I already use Ubuntu at home. If Google can bring out or market Ubuntu to the masses it might get amazing backing from manufacturers. Linux on every desktop and finally serious hardware companies offering their drivers for linux as well as gaming companies start to provide all their games on Linux.
The future is bright for Linux :-) Go Google! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, it's been at least a week since we've had a GoogleOS story
- Wedgieman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy Hell when is this crap about a Google OS going to stop!
STOP IT! if it happens IT HAPPENS! - snapcase, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Kinda cool, but if it is just a Linux distro, then it can't be a MS killer. For it to take on MS it needs to be an OS that can support programs written for windows. Windows still has the most software support. For an OS to kill windows, it can't require everyone to ditch all the programs they used to use on their windows machine.

- q3ctf4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is stupid. Google has no chance in the OS market. Microsoft rules this area whether you like it or not. Wait until vista comes out and microsoft's adcenter, you'll see google stock drop in half. I'm getting kinda tired about google this and google that.
- primal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So what, Google might have another distribution of Linux. It's not going to make a bit of difference. It's the geeky Google fan boys that might use it, and that's it. It's still Linux, and there are enough distros already. It will just add to the confusion.
How many average computer users out there actually care about anything Google does outside of search? There might be a few that care about blogger and some of there services Google picked up, but the majority don't care about google aside from web searches. - mindtrap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, this is uncharted waters for Google. I hope they can be successful.

A google OS would be pretty neat. I probably wouldn't use it, as I use OS X, but linux is fun to tinker in every once and a while :) But this rumor has been floating around for a while, so I don't know if it will ever see the light of day. - DanaG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You forgot GLinux or maybe G/Linux.
It seems doubly appropriate since the Ubuntu desktop is based on Gnome. - Tiak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Also, OS X has a far greater chance of being a problem to Windows than "Google Linux" will have."

Of course, the genius "I'm right, you're wrong, so anybody that doesn't agree with me is stupid" argument... A brilliant tactical maneuver if I do say so myself, stolen from the exploits of my 8 year old cousin no doubt.
http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=2&qptimeframe=M&qpsp=83
Let us look at Linux's 0.3% market share as compared to OSX's 4.35%.... Linux has totally ballooned past them.
On the contrary really, Apple has had a recent revival, more than Linux at least, with Job's recent work, the popularity of the iPod, and now Intel-based Macs, Apple's regaining more and more ground into the desktop market. More than this, it's got user friendliness and the ultimate degree of hardware support going for it, somewhere Linux can be a bit... lacking. While you may be right that Apple has been around longer, they were huge when they started, but they didn't have all that much of a head start when it came to some advances. Linux was first distributed in 1991, the first Mac in 1984, by 1991 the Apple II PC was pretty much dead, leaving them more or less starting from scratch... Anyway, I apologize for however "instantly wrong" I may be... But I just can't help it, I mean I was wrong the instant I started writing this, so what could I do to stop being wrong? - Drizzit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also seems gubuntu.com goes to Ubuntu's website. Looks like Google may need another name again.
I would only expect Google to release this if they could solve some of the bigger problems of Windows users switching to Linux face. Hardware compatibility is top on this list. Second would be software compatibility.
They'd be better off buying Linspire. - jav1231, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Frankly, I think the next OS to come along based on Linux will use Linux as a core. Gnome and KDE won't be it, as nice as they are. It will have to be something akin to OS X in that Linux is the core and kernel but the entire GUI and API resides atop.

Ummm, in many parts of the world it's 1,306 million. In fact stating the number this way is more universal.

Goobuntu means "gullible" in Eyefukwitu, a lesser known dialect of Zulu. - kalphegor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gunix or Ginux or better Google Ubuntu just like Microsoft Windows
They need to port Google Earth, Google Talk, Picasa, Google Desktop, everything to Linux; this will take a while.
Yet Ubuntu 5.10 is here and 6.04 will be realeased on April. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great idea - this will probably be the biggest sudden expansion of desktop Linux in history - and will become the WORLDS LARGEST SUPPORT NIGHTMARE.
I cant wait for all my friends to start calling me to ask how to install a kernel module to get thier new NVidia SLI rig working, or in panic because the screen boots to 'GRUB ERROR 36', or ask me how to get Battlefield 2 working on it because 'they heard it could be done'...etc... - mtupker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0We're going to have to wait until this comes out. Given googles track record it could either rick or suck big time.

"Just ignoring any inconvenient local law"???? You mean that you are saying you think that Communist China denying FREEDOM OF SPEECH to its citizens is simply an "inconvenient local law"?
Wow. If we hadn't let the Chinese into the WTO, I doubt if we would be having this conversation. A totalitarian country, no matter how "reformed" is still a totalitarian country. Even though Google is suppressing searches in China on the Tiannamen Square massacre by the Chinese government against its own people for wanting democracy, this doesn't mean that Chinese laws are actually just. The whole concept of "totalitarianism" implies that its laws and "constitution" are unjust from the start -- because they deny basic human rights to their citizens. - vinny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"'And lets face it, Google isn't exactly renound for their design skills. Yeah, only the most popular search engine, with the best e-mail/webmail system known to man. Try using this in-tar-web before you start talking about it. Again, anyone argues this, instantly wrong.
Owned."
If you think Google's search engine is the most popular because of it's grahpic design, you are an idiot. They are known for being minimalist, not graphic designers. Maybe you missed the point?
