- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31Why am I a fanboy just for appreciating the innovation and usefulness of Google's implementation of an important event into their free software? If Yahoo did it, I'd say they kicked ass.. but they didn't, and they don't.
Besides, there's nothing wrong with being a fan of a particular company. - corevette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19google always goes the extra step...which makes them....well...google
- tacocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yes! The dream app for geek political science majors has come to fruition!
- happyyellowbug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13And THEN some! Rock on!
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8An honest question: What agenda do you see Google as pushing? I know they're pro Net neutrality.
I doubt people wouldn't question Google--there have been several articles written by people wary of Google's acquisition of Youtube. I think they're too big to go unnoticed or unquestioned anymore. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15That's just what I was about to say!
- mrynit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6if you haven't notices already nearly all the major news networks use google earth for satellite images. rock on google
- victorycig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Example:
I opened Google Earth, clicked on San Diego, and through the election overlay, visited California's voter information web page. I learned more about proposition 89 (which was on the front page previously):

We still have a couple weeks to investigate choices and make up our minds, and this is just one more way to bring information to people. - BicBall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4it says "2006 US Election Guide" above all the other checkable fields. when you check it, google draws lines around each congressional district and puts a star in the center. when you click on the star it gives you a popup thing that lists the candidates for house and senate with a "web - images - news" thing under each name. at the top it has a register to vote link, voter information, and information on campaign finances. at the bottom there's a "directions/from to here," but it just gave me directions to my local staples, which happens to be at the center of my district :p
- zip22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3thats why it is being released in advance of election day. you don't even need to read the article, you could have seen that in the description.
"Google is expected to unveil on Sunday night a mashup that combines its popular Google Earth mapping program with information about the U.S. congressional races coming up in two weeks." - Eth4n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm guessing you just install and use google earth.
http://earth.google.com/ - 99Casimir, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This should encourage people to check out what their congressmen are doing and not doing and make the right choices on November 7th.
- loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2How exactly do you use it? The article doesn't say or provide links. Thanks!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't suppose it will look like this map... do you?
http://usinfo.state.gov/journals/itsv/1204/ijse/map.jpg - loveandrockets, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok I see it now. Thanks.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I just wish they would do this with google maps and link to it on the main google page. Google earth isn't used that often by most people because it requires a download to the computer and the program is large.
Oh well, cudos to Google for doing something. - mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Brilliant.
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@victorycig
cool. in my mind i thought it would be some kind of election day realtime tally of votes. it will be helpful. - SuburbanDave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great idea Google!! The article doesn't say where the mashed data comes from, but I really hope they have done this mashup with vote-smart.org
"As a national library of factual information, Project Vote Smart covers your candidates and elected officials in five basic categories: biographical information, issue positions, VOTING RECORDS, campaign finances and interest group ratings."
This site has been around for quite some time, and I often refer to it to see if a particular person's ACTUAL VOTING RECORD matches what their commercial says they are about.

If you are interested, it's a really handy site. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Please digg the original submitter's link.
http://www.digg.com/tech_news/Google_to_unveil_election_mashup - Kithkin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Right... in the next two weeks I'm sure a ton of 3rd party programs are going to flood the lucrative "provide information about canidates" market.
- iamausername, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0although off topic, maybe one of the reasons for the aquisition of youtube was to keep it alive. google has the infrastructure to maintain.
- Burritovision, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1i am not sure if this is legitimate.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5Google is in every single facet of our life. If they wanted to push an agenda (which they do) or place a spin on something, they could do it so easily, and the trust level of Google is so high that many people wouldn't even question it.
- headband, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1If they start the beta now, do you think it will be ready by the 2008 presidential race?
- BicBall, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0am i the only one who has had this on google earth for a few weeks now? might be because im using beta 4
- hudsonspcdoctor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Unfortunately Google is just one connection away from Negrapointe a for NSA Security Chief, seems Google is more or less in leagues with Spytech rather than Hightech....you be the judge....where are our freedoms going?
- vudicarus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Our hope is that young people using Google Earth will…make better, informed choices," said John Hanke, director of Google Earth
How will it help people make better, informed choices? Choices should've been made in advance of election day. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1if google didn't do it i am sure some 3rd party would have.
Nontheless this is very impressive. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -38/+3Wow, I am amazed at how fast you Google fanboys show up in the comments section.
