Google Talk now talks with Jabber
googletalk.blogspot.com — This morning, Google flipped the switch to connect the Google Talk Service to the public XMPP network this morning. Google Talk users can now chat with users on other XMPP services (eg. Jabber) and vice versa.

- firephoto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nice to see this feature and nice to see some one posting the story to digg with a non self promoting link. ;)
- frenzisor, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0This feature has been there for a while now. I was able to connect to it from trillian and gaim when it was launched.
- reverb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@frenzisor: I think you're confusing this with Jabber client software. This is about Jabber *service providers*.
When Google Talk was introduced, if you wanted to chat to other GTalk users, you had to get a GTalk account and log into Google's Jabber server. If you were using a different Jabber service, you were out of luck. Now people on third-party Jabber services can talk to GTalk users directly. - firephoto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Did some testing here between accounts and clients. The capability of making a voice call from google talk to psi-jingle with a non @gmail user shows up and works but the call isn't detected on the opposite end when it's initiated. Also there seems to be something quirky with the status. Other than those things it seems to be working just as you'd expect it too.
- verucasalt, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Google is getting more lame, irrelevant, and evil every single day.
- bradisbest, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1lame? This is great!
- Determination, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1progressive action towards making Jabber protocol a viable alternative to the evil that is AOL IM.
- SbooX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Finally! I'm as much a google fanboy as, well everyone else here, but this is something that easily should have been included on day 1.
- berean, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"Google is getting more lame, irrelevant, and evil every single day." -verucasalt
Just thought I'd quote that. I don't know about irrelevant and lame...or evil...but I do wonder what such the big deal is when no one really uses Google Talk. - Greattastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I'll use it when it can interract with aim.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@berean
I've used Gtalk exclusively since release. - themachina, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@greattastic, berean:
Agreed. Make the damn thing work with AIM. Too many chat protocols out there anyway. - skyhighrockets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Uhh.
GoogleTalk is based off of jabber, in fact, I use googletalk under the jabber protocol to connect and talk all the time. This really isn't anything new, just a way for people who are too nooby to figure out how to do this already. - OutcastJiob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I don't know about irrelevant and lame...or evil...but I do wonder what such the big deal is when no one really uses Google Talk."
I love Google Talk. Based on my, albeit limited, experience with Skype, Gtalk beats the crap out of Skype with regards to voice quality. Of course, it doesn't have nifty stuff like SkypeOut and SkypeIn and so forth, but it's very good at what it's supposed to do. - analogue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0skyhighrockets: indeed, you call us noobs, and you are too noobish to understand what's been new today.
- schadenfreude52, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Agreed. Make the damn thing work with AIM. Too many chat protocols out there anyway."
again, gotta agree
would be great for me if it could work with aim, msn, and yahoo (voice with yahoo would be even better) - chkMINUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Congrats google. Everything will be so much easier if jabber becomes THE protocol used by all im softwares.
- ephemerae, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like it. It's simple, efficient and doesn't hog system resources. This is has in common with gAIM, but it actually LOOKS nice too, and does that nifty voice thing.
All the proprietary AIM, Yahoo and MSN IM programs are steaming piles of useless bloat, if you ask me.
Trillian's not bad, it's like gAIM with a decent UI, but Google Talk is just way slicker, I think. - arkestra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0does this mean that i can use trillian (or another jabber client) to use voice chat with gtalk users?
- stoanhart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I'll use it when it can interract with aim."
You can - now that you can talk to the rest of the jabber network, just connect to a server that supports AIM. - DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Welcome to 2005. You could have done this since they introduced GTalk. I think, since this still makes no sense since NO ONE USES GTALK BECAUSE IT SUCKS.
- theneutralnewt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For the ones saying "Make it work with AIM", I haven't tried it, but shouldn't you be able to use transports just like with any other Jabber account?
- DoTheFandango, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wait, I read it and now I get it. I'm sorry, I'm tired.
+Dugg - Jammerdelray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0awesome
- chkMINUS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think using transports is a server side thing. Some jabber servers support it some dont. (I've never used jabber just read about it before). So im guessing at this current time that gtalk jabber server doesnt support transports. If im wrong please tell me and tell us all how to do it.
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0[[ You can - now that you can talk to the rest of the jabber network, just connect to a server that supports AIM. ]]
Your ideas intrigue me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.
My instant messaging protocol of choice for as long as I've used any has been AIM, if only because it's what all my friends use and is therefore the most practical. If Jabber can do AIM, and Google Talk now does Jabber, I might try looking into it and giving it a spin. - spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice find :)
I wish it could interract with MSN -- which is what most of the peeps here in Canada (eh?) use. - RocketMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1IMPORTANT: for Jabber to Gtalk messages to work, the Gtalk user must have the Jabber user in the buddy list. Otherwise it gives the jabber user an error.
And yes, AIM connectivity would be nice. - ezbuzz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Hot ++ DIGG

Google needs to support the transports. I'm glad someone else mentioned this because I couldn't remember the name for it, but yeah who cares about yet-another IM service even if it's Google's. If they made it so that you could talk to anybody on any other IM service, who wouldn't sign up? I'll tell you who wouldn't: idiots.
Second, this is a step in the right direction, where instant messaging conforms to a protocol like everything else that is worth a damn on the internet. Just like http, pop3, and ftp. If users matter, anyway. - MonkeyFit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wish they would make it open source and add extensions and themes, like firefox. Then people could run it as lean or as bloated as they want. They could even make the other protocols into extensions. You could install the protocols you needed and skip over the ones you don't. Then it would be the ultimate messenger.
- shizeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is great. I think/hope this move by Google will really help strengthen jabbers place in the IM world. An open standard and interoperable IM protocol (XMPP/Jabber) can be nothing but good for everyone. I love the idea of a decentralized IM network that is not in the ‘control’ of a single entity.
- RyanAghdam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, this happened this morning, and it was only posted 9 hours ago. A little late.
- fudged71, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i want MSN support.... make microsoft shake in there pants
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent! Now we need to switch people over to Jabber clients and Jabber servers. About time.
- TexMachina, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess this just means I can now talk to all the Jabber users I don't know instead of the one Google Talk user I do know.
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"Google Talk now talks with Jabber"
You mean it hasn't been previously? I thought google talk WAS using jabber? I thought that was the whole god damned POINT? - anti-net, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes it was, but it was a closed jabber network, its now open
- gorkish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Grrrr. I posted this an hour earlier, but unfortunately there was nothing to link to at the time as Google had not announced anything yet...
Anyway, I also had info on how to use transports for all you who are clueless about it. The key here is that Google does not have to support transports. Use the transports on another server. That is the whole point of jabber after all.
Here's how to do it. There are various public jabber servers out there that run transports to talk to other IM networks, IRC, etc. As an example we will use the server "jabber.anywise.com". To register with the AIM transport on this server, connect to Google Talk with a client such as Psi that supports service discovery and transport registration. Google's own client does not; however after you register with a transport you can go back to using Google's client and still talk to your AIM buddies or whatever --
Anyway connect to Google Talk with psi and then go to "Service Discovery" and browse the server 'jabber.anywise.com' - You will see the transports listed there. Click on one and wait for Psi to gather data and browse into it. Right click on it and you should have an option to register. Registering with the transport means that you have to give it your AIM, MSN, Yahoo etc details so it can connect to the other external IM service on your behalf. After you do that it will log you on. Some AIM transports support the automatic retreival of your server side buddy list; some don't. I don't know if the one Anywise runs does or not, but in any case you can then add AIM buddies to your roster all day -- The format is [screenname]@[transport.dns.name] -- such as AimUser22332@aim.jabber.anywise.com for the purpose of our example.
Hope this helps. - amigiac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is great news, although I can't see the likes of MSN or AOL moving to the Jabber standard and even if they did would they allow chat sessions from outside their servers? We will have to wait and see.
Thanks for submitting this story, it's good to see a digg with decent linkage, and it's not about some lame flash animation.
++digg - gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0and this helps me how?
- ninjakarl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"and this helps me how?" so you can have your jabber account as your msn (if you make it as an msn passport) and your gmail account under the same thing?
I can't wait till Jabber really takes off, it's a much better idea then MSN and Google's server is great.
+digg because I've been waiting since I started using Jabber for this to happen - AaronCompNetSys, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+Mod to [amigiac] 4 comments above me. His method works exactly as said, and it functions great! I am using a secure client on port 443 with GTalk (others are firewalled here at work) and I still have AIM functionality. I grabbed ursine.ca from jabber.org/network/ instead of what he listed - cause it didn't work. If you try it, just give it time when sorting/renaming/accepting your contacts for AIM/MSN/Yahoo.
Thanks man! - soccerob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gorkish, I did what you said but at the point where i click on one of the transports to register, registering is not a selectable option. i can't manage to register my aim account.
- wyattearp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I only have 1 thing to add to Gorkish's post from my own experience. I would strongly recommend only registering 1 transport at a time unless you want a gazillion approval messages that are horrible to Auth/Deny in Psi (great product guys, but you need to add a mass auth button). After you add it, you'll get however many messages equal to the number of buddies you have on said list (for me it was a crap load), ignore them and exit Psi. When you've added a transport, log into Gmail and use the Quickchat to approve users, it's 100x faster b/c the button barely moves and you can just click "Yes, Yes, Yes ..."
Wash, rinse, repeat :-) - jayhut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gorkish, I did what you said and now I can talk to IM people on GTalk, but they don't show up as available. All of my contacts show up as unavailable, even thought it lets me talk to some.
