- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They buy it because:
1. construct facial database of all people on earth.
2. advertise facial products to people with ugly face.
3. track down victims in child porn images.
4. track down internet pirates who likes to post images of themselves.
5. build a complete profile for each face.
6. link google's facial database with FBI/other law enforcement agency's criminal photo database in order to track activity of criminals. - dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They haven't bought it yet. They are in talks with Google...and other companies.
- VSack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My favorite part of the whole "________ company is bad because they innovate by buying up other small companies" argument is that nobody blames the actual small companies for selling-out.
Back in my younger days, I seem to remember that music artists were typecasts as sellouts if they so much as produced a song that hit the mainstream top 40 station. Now we've got drug dealers making movies about how tough their life was before their life of bling and we eat it up.
The same goes for these small companies. IF Google were to buy such a company, nobody seems to say, "dammit XYZ small company, why didn't you just not chase the almighty dollar and keep the product for yourselves?"
This small little upstarts mostly start for one reason and one reason only: to generate money. When a Google or a Microsoft swoops in, the owners of said company look at the opprotunity as a holy-graail-like opprotunity to cash in on their hard work. It certainly takes a lot of hard work and effort to successfully market a product, but I believe that even small companies can make it big in the tech sector.
After all, we ARE talking about a company that started as a tech project for school that in less than 10 years is now valued more than Turner Media. - tintub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Having said that, this is just a rumour anyway. No digg (until there is actually some news to report).
- malhtiek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Microsoft buys companies giving things away for free to charge people. Google buys companies that charge people and gives it away for free. This difference is precisely why people like Google and not Microsoft.
- curmudgeon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lets all put it back in the pants shall we.
http://seems2shel.typepad.com/itseemstome/2005/11/google_has_not_.html - BluParadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think they probably want it for 2 reasons:
1 Picasa could use it to do some cool things organizing pictures
2 Google can use the text recognizition software to allow them to index the content of images. This means better results for their web search and their image search. - EmileVictor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Holy bajeebs! 40 Million dollars just for a piece of biometrics???!!!
I can't do biometrics, but I know that's a lot of money for not much work. I mean, yes, it is a lot of work, but $40 million? Wow. - Duncan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wonder what theyre up to...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google is getting too powerful!
Nooooo!
Just kidding. I wonder what theyre up to. - lo0ol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow... just heard about Riya a little bit ago. Guess all of the people that were yelling "Google will probably end up buying this" might have been right-on. :)
- sdaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So soon you will be able to scan you high school sweetheart's picture and search to see if she has been in porn!"
Haha, the most novel idea usually comes first :P - pdeco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ for buying up small companies...
thought it didnt type it.sry. - Jarda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1WOW... Google innovates once again! By buying another small company.
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There must be more behind this, another small step at a time to make something big.

lol, number 2 is a great one. and 1 gunit, quit whining about your posts, not gettin hits, etc. wah wah wah - Moose_Head, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What the heck are they doing?
- dragoonz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This scares me a little, after hearing all about all those google privacy concerns...
- tintub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another point about the Google / Microsoft thing is that when Microsoft buy a company, it's usually because they want to close it down or restrict the software to Windows rather than use their technology. Competitiveness exhibited by Google is different from the anti-competitiveness that Microsoft shows.
- pdeco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I love google, dont get me wrong. But, why does the community get angry at microsoft, but has no problem with google doing so.
- Deep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I dont think so its been sold yet..these are just rumors..
- sandoz25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Those poor people at mechanical turk will soon be replaced wtih google automation then?

- BlackMamba, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL @ "WOW... Google innovates once again! By buying another small company." So true!
Well anyway, Riya is not even in talks with google, moreover, its still in alpha..huh! - RobertHeadley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This story is a Dupe... and Mislabeled, Google didn't buy anything... Might Google buy Riya? perhaps, but Google might buy anything, cause they generally make really good purchase decisions. Everything googl e has bought, they have used. can you imagine if Riya's technology got used on Google images?
Search for pictures of George Bush, choose a correct picture and get all the resulting ones, talking about power. - hadak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe they will finally do what i've been wanting for a long time.... take a picture of something, and submit it to google search, and google will tell you what it is. that would be cool.
- ForbesBingley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I love google, dont get me wrong. But, why does the community get angry at microsoft, but has no problem with google doing so."
Because when Google do something, it usually doesn't cost you a fortune, doesn't contain a myriad bugs and doesn't crash almost every other time you use it... - supert0ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they will use this with the keyhole satellites to track each person's movements, and then sell even more targeted advertising
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I for one welcome our face recognizing google overlords
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"So soon you will be able to scan you high school sweetheart's picture and search to see if she has been in porn!"
This...this should be done. - Hypersapien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, Google doesn't use its market leverege to force the value down of the company it wants to buy before buying it. Microsoft does.
- ebenthurston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nothing has been announced.
misleading.
lame.
reported. - anthropologist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure what Google's plan for this technology is but the potential scares me. Imagine if you could do an online search for photos using this technology. Google might be able to create a complete profile for each of their users and track everything they do with their services. This may already be happening. (Gmail, Orkut, google personalized homepage, etc...) What if they sold this information to whoever wanted to view it.. What if the government used this to conduct investigations or to track you? I hate to get paranoid but it could be a likely scenario. We should consider the possibilities.

Yet another falls victim to fuzzy feeling marketting. Also you made that up .. shame on you. I'd like to see a couple examples thanks... - jcs_goog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0LOL math_Genius!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I want to use this to compile a list of all the people who looks like Bill Gates.
. - 1gunit, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11st this is a rumor DIDNT ANYONE NOTICE THE QUESTION MARK!
2ND THIS IS A DUP http://digg.com/technology/The_Riya-Google_Rumor the page in this post is link to from the page i posted
SO ***** i wonder if you could read the page that says its a dup when you submited it or maybe you outright stole it from my post
and yea im pissed there are to storys on the front page right now that are dups of my postings - koko775, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I, for one, welcome our benevolent, non-evil (for now?), open-source promoting overlords. They're helping push internet services forward rather than making the same old things. Microsoft did the same thing, minus the benevolence, plus the stealing of ideas (when they could get away with it -- they started buy companies as well), and minus the open source. That's the difference, IMO.

come on, dont be so mean. you have like 195 promoted stories, and as I can see in your profile, you have many dupes too. if it didn't catch on the first time, why not? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"SO ***** i wonder if you could read the page that says its a dup when you submited it or maybe you outright stole it from my post"
Don't forget it's the age of free information. Others can steal your stuff and youcan steal theirs. - mrkredo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Macintosh
