- cactus476, on 10/10/2007, -4/+111Now if they would just remove Norton Security Scan and RealPlayer.
- Monolith4, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67So why would they add StarOffice and not just OpenOffice?
- NeverReturnKid, on 10/10/2007, -3/+62eeewwwwww. Real Player.
- Rfriaz, on 10/10/2007, -3/+56Every time Google does negligent things like suggest that the user download Norton or Real Player, I sit in the corner and cry for an hour.
- championchap, on 10/10/2007, -3/+51AVG and VLC please.
- steeeler58, on 10/10/2007, -3/+33I work in an IT department in a school district and we recently stopped buying MS Office. Instead we use StarOffice on all new desktops. Our NOS is Novell so we can get the enterprise version of StarOffice for just a few bucks. I like SO. It's to use, fairly intuitive and has all the functionality of MS Office. But teachers unwillingness to try new things and use new software absolutely astounds me. You wouldn't beleive how stubborn teachers are. There is so much moaning and groaning about SO. They just don't get it and probably never will. Makes for an interesting work day.
- tgpraveen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+27VLC is definetely needed
- crowdofone, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24The differences between open office and star office (lifted from wikipedia)
Proprietary components in StarOffice that are not in OpenOffice.org include:
* Several font metric compatible Unicode TrueType fonts containing bitmap representations for better appearance at smaller font sizes
* 12 Western fonts (including Andale Sans, Arial Narrow, Arial Black, Broadway, Garamond, Imprint MT Shadow, Kidprint, Palace Script, Sheffield) and 7 Asian language fonts (including support for the Hong Kong Supplementary character set)
* Adabas D database
* StarOffice-only templates and sample documents
* A large clip art gallery
* Sorting functionality for Asian versions
* File filters for additional older wordprocessing formats (including EBCDIC)
* A different spell checker (note that OpenOffice.org does include a spell checker as well) and thesaurus
* StarOffice Configuration Manager
* Macro Converter for converting Microsoft Office VBA-macros to StarBasic
The question is why use star office ... surely for google it would be best of try and increase recognition of the most well known alternative and a lot of people have heard of open office is these days ... most people will just look at the name star office and go 'uh?'
unless of course their getting paid for it which would kinda explain the inclusion of real player ;) - pdeco, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22I think they hesitant about adding VLC because it includes libdvdcss.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+18OpenOffice isn't exactly the epitome of fast either.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Yeah, but it still needs codecs. VLC have them integrated and can use exernal codecs if needed.
MPC has a better UI though - Crazymaniacc, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Who else tried to click that download button? I know I did...several times...
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13"You wouldn't beleive how stubborn teachers are."
I would! I was just educated by them, and I also did tech work. The above two comments wrap up my sentiments exactly. - weeble, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12You can get Java with OpenOffice as well as StarOffice. The difference is... StarOffice includes a lot extra.... it is a nice step up from OpenOffice.
- codyfrisch, on 10/10/2007, -10/+20Thats because teachers typically are some of the least bright people in society. If they were so bright they'd have private sector jobs making 4-5 times what they do as teachers. Yes there are a few bright ones, but as a whole most of them are not that smart, totally lacking logic.
- stalefries, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10That's what she said.
- tavisjohn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10VLC does not REPLACE RealPlayer.
I would suggest that they include RealPlayer Alternative. It plays ALL RealPlayer files, but with out the BLOAT! - tgpraveen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11VLC VLC VLC give me VLC!
seriously this deserves much more than realplayer!!!!!!!! - agimat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9It's a slow MS news day and diggers have to whine about something somehow.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10But doesn't OpenOffice need Java as well? Or is it that Java can't be released with OpenOffice because it's open source?
- imneuromancer, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Adding RealPlayer and Adobe Reader to the pack is genius, not irresponsible. RealPlayer is such a piece of crap to install otherwise, but with googlepack you don't get the spyware and you don't have those annoying registration messages. Similar with Adobe Reader; instead of hunting for it and having to stand Adobe's annoying updater/installer, you get it automagically and don't have to worry about updates.
People who complain about those two being included haven't installed Windows on their own, probably relying on their OEM or something. People who install Windows on a regular basis know that Googlepack is pretty much awesome, saving a good 20 minutes per machine, at least.
The fact that they included StarOffice is just about awesome, IMHO. The Norton security scan, however, is truly awful. I wish AVG would be added instead of Norton. - georgetds, on 10/10/2007, -1/+10You know how it is. You get up in the morning, and you just have to bash one of your favorite subjects. You go online, and gosh golly, no one is even talking about anything you bash! So, now what are you supposed to do with all this pent up bashing needs? You could start a discussion so you can bash it once other people get onboard, or... you can just find the nearest one and kick it instead. Urge to bash, subsiding, subsiding, gone... now you can carry on with your day!
- tgpraveen, on 10/10/2007, -6/+14This is probably the first time i am seeing Google BASHING on digg!
usually ppl here hate microsoft.
is there a change in the air? - geminitojanus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10So they can include Java in the distribution.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9Where have you been? Google fanboyism has gone down considerably over time on digg.
- MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8JAVA is GPL now too, isn't it?
- Tanath, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7VLC would be a good addition, but AVG, while decent, isn't quite up to par.
- TechCF, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Avast and VLC please
- Jok3r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9What about switiching adobe reader with foxit reader?
- gildude, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Actually Star Office absolutely does NOT have all the functionality of MS Office. However, it most likely has everything you need for a school. I would be surprised if there isn't something missing that the financial analysts at the school district need though. SO certainly can meet a lot of people's needs but to claim it has all the functionality of MS Office is just disingenuous.
- kckman, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9People. if you don't want a component of the google pack download, uncheck it. It really is that simple. Now, off to download my staroffice copy................
- Ratteler, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10OpenOffice would have been better than StarOffice. RealPlayer, Norton, and Adobe Reader are just ***** irresponsible.
- chris9902, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8It's a pile of crap. It obvious they didn't have the users best interest when they were whoring themselves out. RealPlayer? wtf is this 1996 again. Norton? oh god. And then they kindly put 7 Google products in there for you. None of which you need.
- McTendo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Your computer sucks, then.
- wafu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6It's wrong to group teachers like that. I've had some incredibly smart, great teachers, who were also open minded - it's incredibly ignorant to judge a whole class of people like that.
- BadassCheese, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5VLC isn't "legal" in the US because it doesn't pay the licence to play DVDs.
- greatblackowl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6I think they have realplayer on there because there are certain files on the internet that require realplayer to play.
I have real on my pc just because my university uses real media for certain things. Windows PCs come with WMP already for use as a primary media player, and macs already come with iTunes. Maybe this was google's logic. - MasteRR, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6IT'S OVER 9000!!!!!!!!
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Still can't beat FoxitReader or Evince.
- 4DFX, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7It's you.
- AnimeOmega, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I would recommend you install MPC + Real Alternative (http://filehippo.com/download_real_alternative/), so you can view .rm, etc. on MPC =)
- awhiteflame, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4It doesn't "need" it. It enhances some things, though.
- omarciddo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6I like turtles.
- skyshock1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Don't be an ass, teachers only have to work 180 days out of the year. Having that much vacation time is kind of nice if you have kids.
- simd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I take it you know Google is a business, right?
- Jorophose, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3It's /almost/ fully GPL. Sun is trying hard, but just like with Solaris, some parts are a bit fuzzy regarding ownership. Give it a few months to a year and it'll be 100% GPL.
- energyblue, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Didn't digg down because it wasn't true. Dugg down because you could have just said it, and not make a cheesy slogan.
- mahsah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You do realize that VLC is extremely illegal in most countries that have software patents? (especially the US, which is where Google is based).
Not only does it include a method to remove DVD-CSS copy protection, which is illegal via court ruling, but it also includes decoders (and encoders!) for many patented formats such as mpeg-4 ASP, AVC, AAC, and MP3. Google would have to strip out pretty much everything except OGG, Vorbis, and Theora. - joeysum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I've tried both, and I've found that StarOffice feels a lot lighter than OpenOffice.
- google01103, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2and you would know this because?
