- saurdo, on 10/11/2007, -5/+36Looks like a lens flare to me. Here it is further down the road: http://tinyurl.com/2altr9

If you move forward, E.T. and the laser beam seem to follow for a while. - Andross01, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22I'm going with lens flare . . . or a street light.
- pak314, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12No I think it must a swamp gas filled weather balloon hit by ball lightning.
- contradictator, on 10/11/2007, -6/+16Phooone... hooooommee..

I was interested too in how they did this so I went digging into the original story. It does stick out a bit. - ekso, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9Even on the Brooklin Bridge!!

- buftar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Maybe I'm just an idiot, but does anyone else think that it looks like a blurry shot of Johnny 5 from Short Circuit? Is the location Diamond Hill Road a reference to the film?
Maybe not... - punkrockscks, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7a frickin' laser beam
- TrainingName, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7E.T. phone hospital.

- elchupito, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I actually work on a similar project to that with a map data company. It's not the images used in Street View, but similar. Check it out: http://digg.com/gadgets/Photos_GPS_mapping_van_how_Google_Maps_and_others_provide_street_pics
- eezzzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Interested in beta testing the Google Earth Colon View courtesy of the pill cam Kevin Rose swallowed before his colonoscopy last year?

- Elliuotatar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Or maybe the laser and ET are following the van! Didn't think of that, did you smart guy?
- livetheride, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Definitely a lens flare, look at this one:
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=new+york&ie=UTF8&om=1&layer=c&cbll=40.671898,-74.406052&cbp=1,237.804547667272,0.467584369449378,1&ll=40.704196,-74.404221&spn=0.06806,0.115185&z=13 - ChronicColonic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The lightning strikes, and huge three-legged vehicles come out. Scientology, my friends, Scientology. Why else would Tom Cruise be in the movie depicting the very same thing? - cyks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@brocklese
Not nearly as good as being able to do it at home... - willcoll, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2"particle cannon detected"
- Grova, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

If they're taking the photos from inside a vehicle, photoshopping the car's interior out of a 360 degree panorama would be a little difficult, don't you think? - suhsix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I for one welcome our...
AHH NEVERMIND - andre4u, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2It's a lens flare and a light streak down what is likely to be a fish-eye lens. If you go down the road SE 4-6 times, until you are under the bridge, you will see that it disappears. The reason it suddenly stops midway is likely because the image is being stitched together from two or more pieces. My guess is that there are two 180 degree lenses taking photos at the same time.
- CCoe, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Um.. It most definitely is not. Did you read my entire post? Can you read? For that matter, can you even see that well? They're in multiple google images, it looks nothing like a "laser" or a "pole," there's NO reason for it to be doctored. I know it's a by-product of the camera they're using because it's in a LOT of pictures in exactly the same way. The camera takes many pictures and pieces them together, it probably has something to do with that. I don't know exactly what the problem is, but the only logical conclusion is that it's the camera. Look at some more pictures containing that effect before you give me any of your idiotic pole theories.
- qwerty1263, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dr Evil must have gotten hold of our little buddy and tried to put "frickin laser beams on their frickin heads"
- shitdrummer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you navigate south down that street the same images reappear quite often on the right hand side. Click zoom out then navigate south, you'll see more of them.
- CCoe, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4It's not photoshop, you idiots. There's a link on the page that goes straight to the google maps image. Also, it's not a pole. Less than 1 minute of poking around and I found that they're usually in a lot of shots in a row down a road - straight up and down - appearing in places poles would never be (like in the middle of the road). It's just a byproduct of the camera they're using.
- StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@saurdo
It is a lens flare I clicked the arrow to go N it looks like and this is what I got
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=new+york&ie=UTF8&om=1&layer=c&cbll=40.67173,-74.40599&cbp=2,234.247531681482,0.605697167755991,2&ll=40.717469,-74.398212&spn=0.090685,0.21698&z=13 - StandardsDT, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1If you don't zoom in it looks like E.T. but if you zoom in you can clearly see that the smoke is just creating an optical illusion. But that laser in the middle of a field is kind of mind baffling.
- iamdexter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who got that much time to find these kind of things ?
http://www.naturalizer-shoes.org/ - maehem, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Don't drive that thing in Boston. It looks like a big moving explosive device.
- SevanElevan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1They are just filming a cutscene for Halo 3
- weebit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's a bird! No! it's a plane! Oh wait maybe it is ET. :) what ever the case, when I saw the pic it had 59,765 Views.
