The NYT article says:
Google executives say they plan to unveil on Wednesday a "communications tool" that is potentially a clear step beyond the company's search-related business focus.
While executives would not disclose what the new software tool might be, Google has long been expected to introduce an instant messaging service to compete with services offered by America Online, Yahoo and MSN from Microsoft.
- elusive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3A "communications tool" could be anything. Web browser, email client, two tin cans attached to each other with string, etc. I seriously doubt google will release a Jabber IM client, thats just everyones favorite google rumor.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Google's Two Cups and a String to be released on Wednesday.
+diggaroo - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it is indeed a jabber client this could make jabber much more 'mainstream' for lack of a better word. If that happens, well, that would rock.

No meetro. - zenchristo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How many years till goOSe?
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i need to get some google stock...
- NetCaptive, on 02/18/2009, -0/+0i bet it'll be web based. Then again, Google Earth isn't, but was an acquisition.
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it is indeed a jabber client you will be able to connect with AIM, Yahoo, MSN etc...
- infra172, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole point is that the line between web based and non-web based is blurring and Google is one of the companies spearheading this move.
- tmcdevitt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Maybe they're finally doing something new with their acquisition of Dodgeball
- AdamCo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It woud be funny if they were just making gmail open to the public
- rustynailab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google already has an IM client don't they? Is called "Hello"
- quickdrawartist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've just registered w/ digg and have jabber and gmail. So I'm trying to test the IM capability but don't know how to.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0All I can say is "Hooowah!"
- Corrado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about a phone? I really need to replace my Sidekick (although I love it) and I'm looking for something a little more open. I think either a Google Phone (GPhone) or an Apple phone (iPhone) would fit the bill nicely. And given that Google is an "Internet" company, It would likely do web enabled things (browsing, email, search, etc.) very well. :)
- kawai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think the new sidebar is actually pretty cool...
- test5477, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I second that, the desktop search is ugly as s***, hopefully the IM is more googlelike. I'll give it a try if it doesn't look like the desktop search.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0whatever i hope its not as ugly as the new desktop search sidebar
- sovereign3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can't wait till it's unveiled on Wednesday. Whatever the "communication tool" is, it's bound to be one hell of an app.
- bryan8m, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Unless Google IM works with MSN contacts I don't plan on switching.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*crosses fingers for the gbrowser*
- whfsdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If Google uses Jabber this could really kick start the Jabber community, this is what it needs :-)
- SillyRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It'll probably either be Gmail public or Google VoIP
- skammich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0mmmm google IM... yummy
- vernsan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Google's Hello is more of a picture sharing/message system.
- volcompimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I was thinking maybe google is going to buy firefox? Considering that the mozilla corporation was recently created and google just recently increased stock offerings. They also have been adding support for firefox with a lot of there prodcuts."
Mozilla isn't a corperation numb nuts and they weren't recently created either. Mozilla's been around for years. The whole mozilla/google
connection has already been pieced together else where. - T-DOT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Please, please be a Google browser!!
- nickster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was thinking maybe google is going to buy firefox? Considering that the mozilla corporation was recently created and google just recently increased stock offerings. They also have been adding support for firefox with a lot of there prodcuts.
- browwiw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0a browser? but I'm already a Firefox acolyte!
choices, choices... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i could definitely see it being gmail public, but im guessing its some type of im client
- Refusedb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Umm competing with yahoo msn and aol?
aren't those all ISP's? ::crosses fingers:: free wifi c'mon
IM would be nice, but then I'd have another account for Trillian. I have enough as it is.. - Refusedb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I like commenting before clearly reading things... Hehehhe.
- StephnDolenc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love google...they don't need to take the trillion approach and allow communication between msn/yahoo/aim networks (although it'd be nice). I'll join regardless.
Do you think I should worry about privacy? Google has an odd privacy policy for its earlier product Gmail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0In the words of my friend cameron FREAKIN A KID
- Mr.Germain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh man, I can wait to see what it is. Everything else they do. Though so far, I like Konfabulator better than Google Desktop. But I'm using both, and just docking gd.
- Twelve-60, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oooh Google Firefox here we come!
Twelve-60 - Paladin27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They should buy Trillian, rebrand it Google IM and integrate it into Google sidebar! I would totally download that!
- WolvenSpectre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Albert Pacino can't be a real person (well maybe if he is a paid news researcher who donates to digg 4 free). He has to be some kind of UberNewsScannningSpiderBotAISentientLifeForm here to save us all....
- micklerlop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0google needs to get the stuff together integrated/shared/streamlined whatever like Yahoo did with their yahoo.com yahoo mail im etc. Google would quadriple double in 6 months.
- Aeiri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Mozilla isn't a corperation numb nuts and they weren't recently created either."
Keep up to date with news, "numb nuts".
http://www.mozilla.org/reorganization/ - FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i just hope to god that it has video chat as a feature.
on osx, you're only able to use ichat and yahooIM for video chat. ichat (while awesome in every other respect) only allows for a firewire camera such as their iSight, and yahooIM, well, yahooIM just blows in every way. - WolvenSpectre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0:)
- boardo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you really mean Al pacino, his name is actually alfredo. but that is beside the point. Chances are a Google IM will be quite interesting and something different. Now only where is the google OS? probably a few years down the road.....
- caseysousa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0maybe i've missed something here... what's the big deal about ANOTHER im client? aren't there a ton out there already? how much different can google re-invent the wheel with an im client? this is so overrated. if you're using a mac, just use adium and that'll take care of all your im needs. i love google, but c'mon, we don't have to get our panties wet every time they make an announcement.
- theplug, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How does Albert Pacino do it?
- aboris26, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0GTalk, Can't Wait
- aetherane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0c'mon popular jabber client!
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Mmm this is certainly interesting. I wonder how open the protocol will be. What OS the client runs on. How much RAM this uses? How much useless ***** (winks, nudges, backgrounds, display pics) it has?
- bilton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0They don't seem to fail with anything else, I can wait to see what it is
