- ThirstyFerret, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Boy, I can't wait for that. The ultimate backup for all your important files...
Of course, there are gonna be the "OMG I'm not letting Google have my data" people who are going to furiously describe the security issues etc. etc... shut up! If you don't like it, don't get it... but they are not I, and I look foward to how Google do with it. And I should think it's free, too. - Philipp_Lenssen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2> Is it a hoax?
I emailed the Google address shown in Corsin's backup of the HTML, and I got an auto-reply... mentioning that the guy is on vacation but also mentioning that for *Platypus* issues, you need to email this and that guy! (More on this in the thread linked above.) - tom6a, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it a hoax? Whois lookup on http://troutboard.com/p shows a hotmail address.

http://cocaman.ch/_platypus/
Looks like (if you view the source, in the comments) it is an internal file sharing project... please let us use it too, Google :D - T0PS3O, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Patrick Chan seems to be some kick ass Java Programmer from California. Seems to fit the bill. If they were after a cross-platform solution then Java would spring to mind.
And they also file their patents under their employees' names so these tactics don't surprise me. Also plenty of results for ["Patrick Chan" stanford]... Very very interesting find... - Philipp_Lenssen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2More discussion at http://blog.outer-court.com/forum/44044.html
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nifty!
I wonder what kind of storage capacity they're going to let you have, and also, would they allow you to purchase more? - vajra918, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2sort of. gDrive is a 3rd party app that uses your gMail account. This would be completely seperate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Stop capitalizing the second letter. This isn't aPple.
- matthewaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good evidence of good news.
- nik.com.au, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Platypus is the system that Google use internally for file storage, remote access and collaboration. It is no big secret that Google had this platform for internal use, and were investigating if they could launch it more broadly. What I think has happen here:
* for some reason somebody saved a copy of the platypus main page to the writely server (probably while designing a new writely login page - they used this as a template)
* the 'saved page' theory works because of all the broken image links
* there is no reason to have a platypus login page on writely.com
* whoever found the page mistook a Google internal app for a public app - from what I know Platypus never had 'G Drive' next to it, they have either added it in or the person who took the shot put it in to make it more interesting.
Google 'google platypus' or similar phrases and you will see that it is an internal file storage app. - slashpd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this is a good find.. !!
- tigger2u, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Infinite storage. Universal access. Larry Ellison's "Network Computer" has finally arrived, and it's Google that brings it to life.
- DocNasty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I actually hope this is true. But in all reality, do you want anyone to actually have your files? Xdrive, iBackup, GDrive, MS Live, (I'm sure yahoo will have one too eventually, and then Ebay will buy one of these companies too)
Me, I'm going to use the hell out of it. I've lost one of my drives that had all my source code on it for the last 4 years. Now, all my projects are on hold until i can find a board that matches the old one.
But on the upside, this is the perfect answer to P2P file sharing. Search the world using Google...Share only what you want to share... and you don't have to open your computer up to outside access...which is scary enough.
I'm mixed on this, but for many of the files I'd normally post to a website anyways, this is a great way to make sure they get indexed as well. Also, if they work that into a network appliance, it could be the new shared drive for any corporation. TAKE THAT, SHAREPOINT..lol - computer13137, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sure Google is reading this website's comments and laughing. If you are reading this, Google, please release this platform on a wider scale for free, and it might not be a bad idea to integrate it with web-based components, like letting people upload images then link to them in forums, like image hosting or something. =P Well, I'm not emailing Google with my suggestions about their secret project... lol.
At any rate, if they ever did choose to release this, it would mean a revolution for how people look at the internet. File sizes would start to mean less, and computers wouldn't be as binding as they are beleived to be now.
I think the problem with the internet today, is how much illegal stuff is on it, that people can physically access but aren't allowed to, and if caught, could get in trouble... Platypus would either amplify that problem or eliminate it.
At any rate, people, calm down. If you don't want Google (or any other file storage service) to have your personal data files, then I have the simple solution for you. Don't upload them! File storage services are great for some people, but some others oppose it, as obvious by their comments. If you want to keep your personal information personal, just don't share what you don't want to share, and keep the rest on your hard drive. Seriously...
At any rate, I hope they do launch this project, and sorry to make my comment so long. =P
~ Kirk - randhirreddy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Another ground breaking app frm Google. This is a paradigm shift in computing, and one that was envisioned by computer scientists. Platform-independent, great. People have been talking about Google OS. Now building such a software layer for each and every PC, irrespective of the platform, is too good a proposition. Integration with the Google Account and Google Desktop is really cool. Been using Writely, and have, at times, wanted to have a back up file on my PC. This issue is addressed with Gdrive.
- kvanloo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who is we?
- kvanloo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It was on Google Blogoscoped, so it should be true ;-)
- bacirriu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1We've had this for years, why is it such a big idea when google does it?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1gdrive has been out for over a year...
- DA5lD, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1This is what I use. Am I missing something?
