- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+97I just took out the trash, then I sat down at the computer. Next, I will browse the Internet.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77Buried as irrelevant, as this obviously has nothing to do with the iPhone.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+63Have you ever used Google Earth?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41I'll assume your comment was serious: Google Earth is an entirely different experience from maps. First, it is 3D and you can see terrain (mountains, valleys, canyons, etc.), and you can see 3D models (such as photo-textured 3D buildings). Second, it has the ability to show dynamic content through the powerful network link (which lets you show things like the current weather, current positions of airplanes, follow the Tour de France, watch sailboat races, etc., etc.). GE can also show much more information than can be shown with Maps. It has all kinds of layers of information built in, and there are millions of people publishing GE information on all kinds of subjects. GE now also has the ability to do time animations, allow you to use different kinds of controllers to fly, supports very large image overlays, and more.
- galaxie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38don't forget to take your shoes off at the door... and wash your hands, that trash was filthy
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Start visiting Al Qaeda web sites and build some large, unidentifiable structures in your backyard. I suspect that might score your area more frequent satellite updates. ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14you need to get your priorities straight, rik.
- kalleanka, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23I'm currently looking on my home town Seattle and all the buildings are just plain gray boxes, just like the previous Google Earth.
When I use local.live.com and their "3D plugin" all the buildings have textures, which is way cooler.
Perhaps, it differs from city to city, but at least where I live, Live's 3D map beats Google's 3D.
But don't get me wrong, I'm not dissing Google Earth, I love it, I just say that for some cities, Microsoft's 3D map still is better. - djaoki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I'm in ur map,
watching you fap. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I am surprised the Linux version is not version .0004 or something weird like that. I have yet to see an app in Linux more than .98834 :)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Google released the GE binary several days ago in order to make sure the file was available on its distributed network in time for the announcement.
- ViceVirtue, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Google Earth has supported Linux for quite some time now.
I'm running Gentoo and I installed it a long time ago (natively compiled) - jstem1994, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Just once, couldn't the link point to the subject of the headline? Not someone's blog??

Yay! Sounds like fun - superdoug, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Direct download link (windows)-
http://dl.google.com/earth/GE4/GoogleEarthWin.exe - akarpo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I agree. It would be nice to have some updated stuff. Although to map the whole US with new imagery would cost...well, Google could afford it. :)
- Timmmm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think you're thinking of Picassa. Google Earth uses Qt so I doubt they'd bother with wine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6/opt is commonly used by some Distros for precompiled programs, things like binary firefox and java etc... Although Debian based distros don't seem to use it although swiftfox is in there. Sometimes distros put KDE and Gnome in there too.
google-earth isn't native its precompiled and running through embedded wine (unless they have changed it recently) but it works fairly well. Its been running on Linux for over half a year. - burnblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It is NOT the same imagery. Try this:
Search "Kingston, Jamaica" in Google maps. No images? OK.
Search "Kingston, Jamaica" in Google Earth. Crystal clear! How about that!
I believe even here where I live in Clarksburg, MD, Earth 4 has given me much more detailed, recent data than Maps provides; This is ever since they did a server update for Earth 4 this summer. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8LOL! But, since the iPhone runs OSX, and Google Earth runs on OSX, I wouldn't be so sure Google Earth has nothing to do with the iPhone.
- Cytranic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Boy you're behind...

- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The beta of version 4 was released in middle-2006, I've been using it since then.
It was the only app that I missed at home. - epohs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'm not sure what's different in the official release than in the beta, but the beta was great.
It is probably one of the most fun pieces of software on my computer. - lengau, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Digg front page tomorrow: "Google Earth controlled by Wii Remote"
Actually, that would be pretty cool. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For those of you who are still reading the comments instead of downloading it, GO GET IT NOW. It's friggin' fantastic!
New users - click your mouse wheel and drag around. Try NYC. Make sure terrain and 3D buildings are enabled. - jhaitas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5when are they going to have paths automatically calculate their distance?
- jaadfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@H3g3m0n
Google Earth on Linux has never had a Wine dependency, I have no idea where this lame rumor came from. Because Picasa is this way, people assumed Earth was the same. It is not. - philo23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you used the wrong word, its not cellphone any more, its iPhone.
- directedition, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Now announcing the iBigBrother. Track your friend's cellphone on Google Earth!
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@kalleanka:
You get the special 3d models with textures if you turn on the "Best of 3d Warehouse" layer. You can also go to 3d warehouse yourself and download specific buildings and such. This is all user generated content, for the most part. - Nocturnalis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7They need to update the maps them selves. I can still see in my driveway the car I sold 3 years ago. I use google earth to get an idea of what an area looks like today not 3 years ago.
- Nocturnalis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm not disagreeing with anything replied to me but it's kind of hard to determine if the area around a land space is up to date. For instance trying to buy property in a city like Atlanta and using google earth or local.live to view the area from birds eye view and all I see is tree's. When clearly houses (newer homes) have been there for over 2 years.
- dreamlayers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I would rather see more coverage than updated coverage. There are still so many populated areas with no coverage. I wonder how Google decides which coverage to obtain. There are some high res squares that are in water or random unpopulated parts of northern Canada while there are densely populated regions with no high res coverage.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Aw I saw that and thought it was going to be something new :( Thats the problem with beta programs it spoils the surprise for you when something gets released!!
- VipeNess, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3snap! first time i've ever got an error with google earth ever, won't even start, and asks if i want to send the error to google but, can't because it is still trying to connect to google's server, which is frozen.
- Stingray57, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why is it so hard for them to add a function to 'sort' the locations. I mean it's so obvious. I haven't found a program or a hack or anything to alphabetize the places. It's silly.
- Negyxo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i got one of those SpaceNavigators at work and it's actually much cooler than i thought it was going to be. It's nice and heavy (so it dosen't just flip off the desk) and after about 30 seconds of use it's completely nature to navigate around various 3d environments. It was working in the old version of Google earth too.
- jaadfoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, since the imagery in Google Earth is typically 1 to 3 years old, I would suggest finding a new application to see things "today". Three years is a fairly typical update cycle for the people who fly this stuff.
- robbh66, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It's somewhat sad that digg cant find a way to permanently ban the douchebag (currently kewinrose) who keeps just making new accounts and continually spamming his lame sites.
- keldawgyo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i mean if you actually paid for this product you could have an argument.
- ashokartgallery, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yes it's really a great news,i always love Google Earth.

- burnblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Depends on where you are. When I downloaded Earth 4 last summer, a lot of imagery was updated this year as opposed to the 5 year old data I was seeing in Earth 3. Of course they can't do the entire world at once, though I do agree they can step up their efforts.
Does anyone think imagery updated daily (or weekly) would be a bit scary, or would you welcome it? - KungFuJesus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1what about KDE 3.5.5?
- bjornski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use http://www.flashearth.com for general map viewing.
Google Earth is awesome when researching tho. I have that and worldwinds installed. Love 'em both. - Fhwqhgads, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4I now have 3 Google Earth shortcuts on my desktop which I can't delete. What the *****???
