Google Drive killer coming from MIT Startup

Shower us with money, we demand it !
Big Deal, same stuff is part of OS X and also connects to .Mac iDisk...
What's so special ? I saw nothing new here, just a nice interface with
auto syncing FTP scripts . . .- monkeyvoodoo, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2O_O

- wedgemartin, on 03/11/2008, -15/+32Hardly a bubble, and hardly innovative. People have been doing this for ages ( myself included ) but we just wrote it for ourselves with whatever scripting language and rsync. Some give you the option to turn a 'dropbox' into an RSS feed, etc.
- Killwize, on 03/11/2008, -18/+5BURRID Because, This program is a COPY of FolderShare. (The AudioGalaxy 'Groups' feature sans AG.)
- RobotBuddha, on 03/11/2008, -2/+3Heck, even aside from scripting or fuse modules, fish in kde does the whole webshare thing with any account that has ssh. These kinds of things are a lot more user friendly to most people though. I'll give them that.
- NoData, on 03/12/2008, -0/+31there were mp3 players before the iPod too. don't underestimate usability.
- capiCrimm, on 03/11/2008, -16/+12Next big thing? This is old, it's just a repo system. I didn't see anything new besides a more general user interface(as opposed to code)
Hell, just use googlecode's svn repo and you're 90% of the way there.- ePuck, on 03/11/2008, -2/+53Interface is everything. If it's not easy, automatic, people won't use it.
Having to look up svn commands ftl- Killwize, on 03/11/2008, -2/+4The interface is a copy of FolderShare. Down to the real folder look and little icons to show that the files are transferring!

What if you suffer braindamage and forget your passwords to your online drive?...
There is no reason either should happen with any particular likelyhood... Flashdrives as a whole are rather durable, and even in the scenario where a flashdrive breaks (which really shouldn't happen if you don't treat it like *****), you have a harddisk somewhere that still has the most recent update.
Also: what kind of a bony ass do you have to have for sitting on something to damage something more than a washing machine?... - ayeroxor, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1Just wipe off your brain and memory and let it dry it. It should work again.

- jabberwolf, on 03/11/2008, -4/+3Um for not so big a price per year I've been using BEINSYNC. Not just one folder but you get to select your desktop, and other folders as well. The reason I've been using this instead of a standard drop box, which is not so new, is for the sharing online that I let some users have access to. But That was last year and now have foldershare.com again basically the same thing but free. So maybe this is new for mac, but not PCs.
- DjArcadian, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I used to use BeInSync. Their ***** program deleted half my files.
- k1down, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1I personally bump foldershare. Hasn't screwed me yet. Murders my D-link router for some reason though.
- Alexx3k, on 03/11/2008, -9/+15Next big thing? This has been around for YEARS, it's just a stripped down SVN with a fancy interface. Props for them being able brand it and bring it to bring it to the masses though - but regardless, software development teams have been using this stuff since the 90's (ok it was CVS then) - just install subversion into your terminal, and you get all the same features (and a lot more) plus the flexibly to host your files anywhere and have unlimited control, but no fancy GUI... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subversion_(software)
- blackfog, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11This is different in the sense that it's meant to be more user friendly than any subversion system and doesn't require anything more than the native interface (be it Windows or Mac). In theory it's the same, but this provides an easy to use solution for ANY user...can't say the same for other version control systems. It also works with the native environment, I'm excited to try it out when beta launches
- capiCrimm, on 03/11/2008, -3/+3native environment interfaces also already existed. Look at tortoiseSVN. It just so happens it's a lot more efficient to use the CLI.
- idntunknwn, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4Tell me how to setup TortoiseSVN to automatically upload changes and push them to clients in mere seconds. Having to type any commands into CLI is a lot less efficient than having to type in no commands.
- elbekko, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1TortoiseSVN has shell integration for updating and comitting. I'm sure the Mac equivalents have that too, and there are even SVN GUIs out for using on *nix systems.
And I doubt automatically sending it is really all that good, mistakes get synced before you have the chance to correct them. - Alexx3k, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1"Having to type any commands into CLI is a lot less efficient than having to type in no commands." I'd say the opposite, I hate things that take the control out of your hands. The best part of the commit/update cycle is that you can work and make changes without worrying about committing anything by accident.
- capiCrimm, on 03/11/2008, -3/+3native environment interfaces also already existed. Look at tortoiseSVN. It just so happens it's a lot more efficient to use the CLI.
- Alexx3k, on 03/11/2008, -1/+3Yeah, it's nice to give things the simplicity for the average home user - not many people want to hammer out commands in terminal to update and sync their files, but I do wonder why any comments pointing out it is basically just subversion are getting down-modded.
- diggimator, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I think this has more features than just a pretty interface. SVN doesn't do the following:
1. Monitor local files for changes, then automatically upload them
2. Automatically replace local files with newer ones on the server, every few minutes
3. Store files on a free remote server, then generate web URLs for sharing with others, as well as...
4. Automatic generation of photo galleries
- blackfog, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11This is different in the sense that it's meant to be more user friendly than any subversion system and doesn't require anything more than the native interface (be it Windows or Mac). - ralphthemagi, on 03/11/2008, -5/+29Depends. This is just another Web 2.0 company that's a value add to a bigger company like Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. If they can ride it out on investment capital until they get acquired, it may be free for a while. If not, you'll have to pay. Because something like this wouldn't be able to make use of Amazon S3, that means the cost would probably be significant. I'd suppose around $5-$10 a month.
- michaelz92, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2how is 5-10 dollars a month "significant"? sounds pretty reasonable to me.
- markmmckinney, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I'm sure he means the total cost to provide the service not the cost to the user.
- ralphthemagi, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0Correct.
- markmmckinney, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I'm sure he means the total cost to provide the service not the cost to the user.
- Iconoclast314, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0Actually, they're using S3.
- ralphthemagi, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0How is that possible? I don't think S3 allows you to read/write like that. I suppose they could cache the files to a local server, then re-put them onto S3, but that's going to be a LOT of extra in/out transactions which would sort of defeat the purpose of S3.
- michaelz92, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2how is 5-10 dollars a month "significant"? sounds pretty reasonable to me.

http://www.getdropbox.com/privacy- sporg, on 03/11/2008, -1/+34"to better understand your needs and interests" Thats a bold faced reference to data mining if I have ever heard one.
I like this section on law enforcement:
"Compliance with Laws and Law Enforcement. Dropbox cooperates with government and law enforcement officials and private parties to enforce and comply with the law. We will disclose any information about you to government or law enforcement officials or private parties as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate to respond to claims and legal process (including but not limited to subpoenas), to protect the property and rights of Dropbox or a third party, to protect the safety of the public or any person, or to prevent or stop any activity we may consider to be, or to pose a risk of being, illegal, unethical, inappropriate or legally actionable."
Basically they will act as the thouht police at their sole discretion and allow law enforcement to peruse your files and logs on a whim without a warrant. Ask any lawyer that is exactly what that clause is implying.- koko775, on 03/12/2008, -3/+2The founders said that encryption will eventually be implemented -- the sort of encryption where they can't read your files. They do think about privacy, but getting a product out first is foremost on their minds. Email them if you wish to inquire.
- sporg, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4Yeah KoKo775 you go ahead and believe that if you like.
- sporg, on 03/11/2008, -1/+34"to better understand your needs and interests" Thats a bold faced reference to data mining if I have ever heard one.
- solarwind24, on 03/12/2008, -1/+20They invented AES256 for a reason.
- tracywood, on 05/03/2008, -0/+1I noticed that when my friend dropped Coldplay's latest free song in our shared folder, it never uploaded it on his end, but it was near immediately available to me on my end. It looks like they did a checksum of the file, recognized that many other users already have the same file and simply added it to our shared folder. This means they only keep one file instead of thousands. Interesting.
- WNW3, on 03/11/2008, -1/+21Privacy agreement looks okay to me...but then I have zero ability to really read one of these things. I dont see any mention of the privacy of your files specifically though. I may have missed it.

- BlaenkDenum, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1@perot9296: Why not? This is something similar to version control. There are many version control systems most of which are open source, such as Subversion. If you have a repository set up on a server, install some type of Subversion integration for your Operating System such as TortoiseSVN for Windows, you pretty much have this. I always do this type of thing with my friends (It began when we were working on our indie game).
Of course, this is far more intuitive, streamlined, and user-friendly, not to mention Subversion and the like were probably meant for development purposes rather than desktop uses. Also, they have to pay for the hosting of the site, the storage of the files (Which are kept on their servers not on the users' computers as far as I know), and many other things such as bandwidth. But what I'm trying to say is that this isn't necessarily something that only money can give. I don't blame these guys for charging money, for they were the ones to come up with the idea of targeting average users with this 'technology', but I'm just trying to make a point. It would definitely be sweet if they gave a certain amount of space free, and have upgrade packages available which cost money.- Archer007, on 03/20/2008, -0/+3NO! Bad! Please read it before you even consider using this crap.

- fkr3, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I was replying to insomniac who thinks it's pointless to try the service because one day they'll expect money in exchange for their service... which is probably a very similar situation insomniac enjoys with his employer (or will when he's older).

- douggmc, on 03/11/2008, -4/+1What storage is needed on their end? The storage is on the respective computers "linked up" in by the user. They are just implementing a nice nifty GUI wrapped around rsync (or more likely unison) basically.

( gigaom.com/2008/03/11/drop-it-like-its-drop-box/ ) - legoalert33, on 03/11/2008, -1/+6I would like a small fee rather than advertisements and low bandwidth. Otherwise is just an extension of megaupload and rapidshare services.
- insomniac8400, on 03/11/2008, -22/+8Then there is no point in even trying out the service.
- mozaic2001, on 03/11/2008, -7/+49i am loving it... if it's free .. ; )
- bobmckenzie, on 03/11/2008, -2/+1I for one, would pay for this in a heartbeat. Our VPN connection at our office is tempermental/sporadic at best. I can say without question, that I would pay for this for our employees working remotely on two conditions: 1) it's reliable 2) it's secure
- mwklein, on 03/11/2008, -2/+32This is perfect... been looking for something like this for quite a long time. Even if it isn't free, it would be worth it.
- supremegoat02, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I'd almost rather pay for it to make sure I get killer quick service.
- HanuMatrix, on 03/11/2008, -2/+1who do U work for goat92? ;-)
- MH94, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Check out orb.com it offers a similar service for media files. You don't really upload your files though instead your computer is treated like a sever that is accessed from their site and you can stream your content from anywhere. But Dropbox is definitely the next step.
- cpdog, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0Try Jungledisk?

- bckn, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Like most start-up IT companies, they're not public. More than likely, they'll get sold off to a bigger company by the venture capital fund that gave then their seed money.
- umbrae, on 03/11/2008, -4/+344My only concern here is privacy. They need to make it absolutely clear what they do to protect your files, who has access to them, and so forth before it can become useful in businesses.
That said, though, I think this will be hugely useful in a personal context. Great job, guys.- 4d669, on 03/11/2008, -24/+5Just use truecrypt and then sync. Can't people do stuff on their own anymore? They need this "just works" simple GUI ***** now?
- spyrochaete, on 03/11/2008, -0/+8Technology is always supposed to "just work". If you're telling your users they're using your product wrong then they won't be your users for long.
However, I agree with you 100% that users should encrypt their own data. Then the user can dictate the degree of security and malicious individuals who break into your account won't know which standard to brute force. - Focher, on 03/11/2008, -3/+5Yes, if given the choice between "jump through these hurdles and hassle to do it" versus "it just works" I bet most of us find ourselves preferring the latter option. Seems a bit silly that anyone would prefer the alternative, but whatever floats your boat.
- ePuck, on 03/11/2008, -4/+7It would be a huge pain to encrypt everything that you want to save. Not to mention wasted space and the time it would take. Inconvenient.
Easier if they ensure its secure on their end. - chubbybunny, on 03/11/2008, -2/+7IMO, If your personal documents are important enough that you need to encrypt them then you shouldn't be trusting other people to do that for you.
- dukeochutney, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2i think its mac user thing.
- mohamedmansour, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1I aggree, buisnesses should not use this software whatsoever! The privacy laws state *there is no privacy* any government organization could just snoop around. If t hey can do it, anyone can, any skilled hacker.
What they should do, is make the client DropBox Open Source and the DropBox server as well, if we want to use their dropbox server, then we pay money. Otherwise, we can install this product on our own servers and let the community innovate it as well instead of 2 developers (recent grads) doing so. Maybe they are afraid that they are using rsync/svn code in their code.
- spyrochaete, on 03/11/2008, -0/+8Technology is always supposed to "just work". If you're telling your users they're using your product wrong then they won't be your users for long.
- legoalert33, on 03/11/2008, -1/+9Porn?
- Lou3000, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Then backup extremely private files to an external hard drive and just put files you want to sync on this. I have two main computers and like to sync school notes, I don't care if anyone decides to read my law school notes.
- Totalkeen, on 03/11/2008, -4/+17If the servers are USA-based, then regardless of the company's privacy policies I wouldn't trust my data to them. A government that thinks it needs to monitor every word communicated among its own citizens certainly can't be trusted to keep its prying eyes off of a non-citizen's data. (I'm Canadian)
If the servers are in a non police-state, however, then I'm sold. Hell, I'd trust Cuba more than I'd trust the US at this point. Both run by dictators, but at least the Cubans haven't gone high-tech with their data mining capabilities. - dukeochutney, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2undoubtedly will be located in us. so we can toss all privacy rights out the window. useless tool then.
- bbendele, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Who cares if it isn't private. I have nothing to hide
- DurtyJ, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1I always assumed anyone who bothered using any such service that transfers data to other peoples computers lives with the knowledge that their stuff could be stolen and looked at. I also always assumed people who used these services with data that would be a problem in other peoples hands were ***** idiots. If it's that sensitive, you probably shouldn't be using an online service.
- rmxz, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4Use a client that handles encryption.
- Jeezoflip, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1in the demo, it showed that in the browser, there was the SSL encryption lock. So they probably have their own, or some pretty good certificates.
- koko775, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2Last I heard, businesses have the option of running the server locally, or running a relay/cache to Dropbox.
These are some pretty smart folks; they already have answers to a lot of your questions. - nartvq, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3If you're concerned about privacy, then use truecrypt to place encrypted volumes in Dropbox.
http://www.truecrypt.org/
- 4d669, on 03/11/2008, -24/+5Just use truecrypt and then sync. Can't people do stuff on their own anymore? They need this "just works" simple GUI ***** now?
- insomniac8400, on 03/11/2008, -4/+92Great features and all, but syncing your private files on someone else's web server isn't good for business. If they sold a server product you could buy and host yourself, this product would really take off.
- jmpeagle, on 03/11/2008, -13/+4you know you choose which files others can see....
- LiquidIse, on 03/11/2008, -1/+13That is moot point. This blows something like SVN away when it comes to things outside of pure code. Also, many of the suits in a business are not comforable with command-line interfaces, and something like this would be ideal for project documentation or costumer relations.
- spyrochaete, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4Are the storage servers hosted in the USA? You can't tell the US government which of your files are exempt from the PATRIOT Act.
- insomniac8400, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2jmpeagle, you must not understand how this works. You are uploading all your files to their server. Whether you designate files to be public or not, the company has access to all of them. But go ahead and use their service, those MIT guys are going to have fun reading your files.
- chubbymidget, on 03/11/2008, -5/+2Look at iFolder for a secure corp solution
- Firehed, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2There are a number of products out there that do that for a local install, including the one that the company I work for sells. Apparently our google juice for 'document management' isn't quite what it could be, but there are plenty of DMSs aimed at the business/enterprise market.
- msodrew, on 03/11/2008, -5/+3Selling a souce code package that you would install on your company/personal server would not work. The source code would be leaked onto the 'net, everyone gets the service for free, dropbox is no more.
Hosted solutions are the only ones that will work for companies like this. I'll gladly pay for storage if they allow quite a bit for the money.- insomniac8400, on 03/12/2008, -0/+5This isn't linux world, you can precompile your applications.
- adventuresof, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1yeah because my aunt has a shell account on a server in a datacenter somewhere and knows how to set up a web app. Heck, I *do*, and I'm happy with a hosted solution- when I come home from work I don't want to have to do MORE work.
- koko775, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Yes, they can (and presumably do or will) do this.
- jmpeagle, on 03/11/2008, -13/+4you know you choose which files others can see....
- rufusdog, on 03/11/2008, -6/+10One of the users I support turned me on to this. It works well for people that don't have access to large amounts of network storage or for people who want to transfer data from home or on the road. It isn't the most intuitive interface I've ever seen, but it is fairly fast.
- MrCalifornia, on 03/11/2008, -0/+38Not an intuitive interface? It's a folder and you put stuff in it and the stuff you put in it shows up on the other computers. How could it be more intuitive?
- wiifm69, on 03/12/2008, -1/+1maybe if there were hebrew popup instructions
- Nickdotnet, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2And its still in private BETA, so how exactly do you know it "works well" or "isn't intuitive"

SVN, absolutely. It even has the green check-mark arrows on the icon files like...TORTOISE SVN! crafty bastards.
- they, on 03/13/2008, -0/+2I think what happened is people don't understand what current version or subversion is, and they think I insulted their mother.

- stygiansonic, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2I'm also not sure why the comment's getting dugg down. SVN (and the TortoiseSVN client) was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw the demo.
That still doesn't change the fact that it's very neat, nonetheless.

These things are cool - but i guess I am old school and prefer command line FTP- andrewtayloruk, on 03/11/2008, -1/+10There's nothing old-school about FTP; FTP is an in-secure, limited, technology that should have been put out to pasture a long time ago. HTTPS Web-Dav or SFTP are the sane choices. I for one welcome this type of technology, it's the seamless synchronisation as well as the delta / incremental changes I like.
- Firehed, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2The only difference between FTP and SFTP, for practical purposes, is equivalent to using HTTPS over HTTP (and command-line FTP is pretty much the epitome of old-school, unless gopher:// is your thing). However, the instant multi-machine syncing is really the killer app here. In principle, this isn't much different than a mapped FTP connection, but working with content diffs and the little growl notifications make it a lot more usable.
- larryc, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0Egnyte doesn't let you work when you are offline or disconnected. It seems like dropbox, however, will let you do this.
- AbstortedMinds, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Oh andrew already took my comment, use ssh

- caerwyn, on 03/11/2008, -2/+3No, just an extremely clean interface- something that's been missing. Still not sure I actually have a need for the product, but this definitely lowers the barrier of entry. The revision management is also a plus, although I really wonder how might interact with storage limits.
- mattmcm, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11I approve of your comment :D Excellent!
- aaronwolfe, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Article with "startup" in the title = tons of spam comments.
- zplot, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Online file storage has been popping up all over the place lately. Most sites like XDrive are impementing desktop tools and file collaboration as wel, although these guys have an exceptionally sleek interface. The only really unique online storage feature I've seen lately came from Box.net, which lets other web apps like Zoho interact directly with the files stored online.
- muhadeeb, on 03/13/2008, -0/+1web apps interacting with files in storage are ripe for abuse unless files in storage area are secured

- TuckWat, on 03/11/2008, -1/+10Awesome! I've never heard of Foldershare before. I just set it up on my laptop + PC and now have web access to their files.
- J0415, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2their files? whose files?
- 298th_Scat, on 03/11/2008, -1/+5I use foldershare as well.. Works great and encrypted/compressed/ limited to 2gb files though..

- gurudrew, on 03/11/2008, -0/+18I also like that Foldershare does not host your files. This does mean there is no restore function like DropBox has, but I like that my files are only on my computers.

- ti3sto, on 03/11/2008, -9/+3And, it's Microsoft, Windows only. Yeah... we love MS :)
- toddtmw, on 03/11/2008, -1/+4It is not Windows-only. It also wasn't created by Microsoft. Foldershare was an independent company that Microsoft bought. I use it between Windows and Mac computers with no problems at all. They have not released an Intel-native Mac client, but it doesn't really use much CPU time, so that's not a very big deal.
- GergMeister, on 03/11/2008, -1/+3Not according to the website, maybe they've just recently added mac support?
- Antialias, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3nope, I was using their mac support 2-3 years ago.
- brucebeh, on 03/11/2008, -4/+1foldershare IS cool, but i wish they had a mac version.. i do use it though on my windows computers
- simplezeal, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2They do! https://www.foldershare.com/clientdownload.aspx
- asurroca, on 03/11/2008, -0/+3This is essentially a web2.0 version of FolderShare. I've used FolderShare to sync data between my computers for ages, but you've got to admit...while FolderShare works pretty damned well, it is not very user friendly or nice to look at. I definitely want to give this service a try, but once it's out of beta, well...FolderShare is free, so it's going to have to be infinitely better to justify payment (perhaps offering a ***** of storage would help)
- intense321, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Foldershare totally sucks. It sometimes screws up my file versioning and overwrites newer files with older files. It's totally worthless. Had to uninstall after jacking with it for over 8 months trying to get it to work.
- simplezeal, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0Agree! I wish there was a way to look at the change list before applying the same.
- stickyfingers, on 03/12/2008, -0/+2I used to use foldershare, but the biggest limitation of foldershare for me was that both computers have to be on at the same time to sync up, so it really didn't give me much benefit... If I was at home then Icould just use syncback, and if I was out of the house I could use FTP, or a VNC client. The cool thing about this app is that the other computer doesn't have to be on to sync up.

- 4d669, on 03/11/2008, -16/+147So this what technology has become... It's not about engineering something innovative anymore, it's about creating something that existed years ago and adding an interface so simple that even a retard could use it.
- 8270369, on 03/11/2008, -0/+115Yes. Yes, it is.
- subliminalurge, on 03/11/2008, -0/+21Yep, you're catching on.
Actually, that's not really what technology as a whole has become. But if you're in the tech field and looking for a quick way to put together a startup and cash in for big bucks a few years down the road, it seems to be the most consistently effective plan. - Angostura, on 03/11/2008, -1/+112Says the man who crafted his response by individually setting the bits in core memory and then sending them to digg via his command-line implementation of HTTP

- subliminalurge, on 03/11/2008, -1/+16Specialty tools and a microscope? Pussy. A real man can carve a CPU with his Swiss Army Knife. By the light of a campfire. While fending off a bear.
- leerayIG88, on 03/11/2008, -7/+1Chuck Norris killed a bear by just staring at it. Died two weeks later. Fact.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0 - z0rz, on 03/12/2008, -4/+3I use butterflies. I open my hands and let the delicate wings flap once. The disturbance ripples outward, changing the flow of the eddy currents in the upper atmosphere. These cause momentary pockets of higher-pressure air to form, which act as lenses that deflect incoming cosmic rays, focusing them to strike the drive platter and flip the desired bit.
- davedelong, on 03/12/2008, -3/+1I orchestrated my butterfly collection and flipped the bits with the sun's rays.

- fbeecher, on 03/11/2008, -0/+17In many segments, it's no longer engineering that drives product development; it's user experience. For the most part, this is as it should be. After all, why do we make technology, for the hell of it? No, we make technology for people to use.
- ppearson111, on 03/11/2008, -0/+11Microwaves have been around forever... how long did it take for somebody to put a "popcorn" button on there? That's what its about -- making it simple and usable, getting complexity out of the end-users' way.
- Qumahlin, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1now that you bring up the popcorn button, quite frankly I have yet to own a microwave where the "popcorn" button works. The only way to make truly acceptable microwave popcorn is just to stand next to the microwave, set it to 10+ minutes and just sit and listen to the kernels pop. If you rely on the popcorn button you'll come back to a bag thats either mostly kernels, or burnt to a crisp
- Bamborzled, on 03/12/2008, -0/+4Ah yes, but how long will it take for somebody to add a glossy effect to said popcorn button, and call it "Poppr™ 2.0™ (BETA™)"?
- jessethouin, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Have you ever driven a Ford Model T?
- recruz, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1read up on business/entrepreneurship. probably 90% of all businesses are simply a knockoff of another business, just done better. it is only every once in a while a completely new technology/idea is created. try coming up with a new idea, then search for it on the internet. chances are, it has already been created- it just might not have been done very well and needs improvement.
- IllBeBack, on 03/12/2008, -2/+3Of course. Making something that is extremely complex simple and easy to use for everyone is what extremely smart people do.
Why do you think no one uses Linux and more and more people are going to Mac? - Split98, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0obviously using this as a handy tool to sync your multiple computers is going to be the main draw for most of us, but what is going to be another huge push for this is going to be the file sharing. I don't know about you, but of all my friends and family I would like to share with, me and 2 other guys are the only ones that would have any interest in using something that ISN'T 'designed for a retard'.
Believe it or not, not everyone has hours a day to dedicate to learning and updating their file sharing software.... - m00n1, on 03/12/2008, -0/+3Heaven forbid your grandmother should be able to use the computer! What's the world coming to. Command lines FTW!

- jpb0104, on 03/11/2008, -5/+4Does anyone wonder about system resources when installing something like this that monitors folders for changes?
- Otto, on 03/11/2008, -1/+11Monitoring folders takes no resources to speak of. Operating systems have useful hooks that will cause events to occur when folders that you've asked to monitor have changes.
- Qumahlin, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1Think about it, your computer is constantly monitoring for changes to files, Vista's search function and Spotlight in OSX are two quick examples of programs that are always monitoring your folders for files and those programs are built into the OS'es. Google Desktop uses no real resources and also indexes on the fly.
- eOgas, on 03/12/2008, -0/+1Are you kidding me, whenever you look on websites and query about speeding up your computer, they always recommend turning off indexing to increase performance.
And even though I haven't used google desktop in a while, back when I first tried it, it was a bloated piece of crap.

- danz32, on 03/11/2008, -4/+47Microsoft already has the same thing...its called Foldershare (www.foldershare.com)
They are basically designed to do the same thing, and Foldershare also works on PC and Macs. I am not sure what the pros/cons of them are, but at the moment they are both free and looking like great ideas for managing files across different computers- gurudrew, on 03/11/2008, -0/+14The biggest difference is that Dropbox stores your files online while Foldershare does not.
- LanceUppercut, on 03/11/2008, -1/+10Judging by the comments on the Foldershare blog, it also eats a dick. Microsoft really does make some great stuff, but the newest version of Foldershare is locking up PCs and Macs and crashing Vista.
link: http://foldershareteam.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!9D ...- jessethouin, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2NO!!
- jobuca, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2I use foldershare on a laptop with XP and a desktop with Vista. I've never had any problems with either operating system.
- maldog, on 03/11/2008, -1/+1i love foldershare! I share stuff with people in Scotland, no fuss.
- theHM, on 03/11/2008, -0/+4Are you also in Scotland?
- intense321, on 03/11/2008, -2/+2I can second that comment. Foldershare sucks.
- jguerry, on 03/11/2008, -0/+1My friend and I have been using Tubes for over a year to share music and guitar ideas...it was free. it stores files online. it also notifies the friend when you have added/updated a folder/file
I think dropbox will blow Tubes away, but it is not the "next big thing"...it's already here people.- m0rph, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1Tubes no longer exists.
- NigelF, on 04/05/2008, -0/+0Dropbox looks more promising for these reasons:
1. Automatic versioning of files with ability to go back to an earlier version
2. Ability to retrieve previously deleted files
3. Online storage of files
4. HTML link can be emailed to enable people to view files onlines
5. Easy interface - useability is crucial to product takeup
6. Good demo - didn't find a demo for foldershare but I'm sure there's one somewhere - they seem focused on delivering a value oriented service rather than just technology (of course value will be determined by how much Dropbox actually charge when it is released).
- spyrochaete, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6Looks like a well thought-out service and it was a fun presentation. The only thing I don't like is that you have to install software on your PC which, presumably, always stays resident. I'm also impressed with but suspicious of how quickly changes were mirrored - there must be a lot of heartbeat traffic with the server.
Looks like a great service for people who need to mirror files between two remote computers, but I'd personally rather use a web-only service to back up my files, plus I can't imagine corporations entrusting their files to a third-party startup. - RuntPacket, on 03/11/2008, -4/+8Novell IFolder FTW, it's been out and open sourced for a long time now. and it just works.
- ascheinberg, on 03/12/2008, -1/+2Except it's slower than my grandmother on a rainy day.

- angers, on 03/11/2008, -0/+34Hopefully they release a LInux version because this looks great!
- TodoInTX, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6Reminds me of iFolder - http://www.novell.com/products/ifolder/overview.ht ...
- RuntPacket, on 03/11/2008, -0/+6https://help.ubuntu.com/community/iFolderClient
Me too and iFolder already supports linux, Get your self a cheap host with decent stroage and setup up your own ifolder. You cna use ftp, webdav etc..- ronintetsuro, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2I think the point was that this could be a solution for the casual user that doesn't have IT experience/IT staff on-call.
- mossblaser, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2Grab some web space (or setup a server) with SSH access, mount your SSH share and run svn on the server - works as shown but tis secure and can use key based authentication and also its free and massively cross platform, if you must run a HTTPS web interface for stuff on there. Works well!
- parax, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2That solution assumes a fair amount of technical knowledge. A growing number of Linux users (and computer users in general) are looking for no-hassle solutions. Hence the popularity of Facebook and Youtube. It's not that sharing video files and images was so difficult in the past, it's that less technical users are looking for more functionality.
- AJC1ne, on 03/11/2008, -1/+2Now this looks amazing, hope I make it to the beta
- chief100, on 03/11/2008, -2/+3I just use gmail drive and access my files everywhere.

- linnytrap, on 03/11/2008, -0/+0AMEN! That is the first thing I thought! I pay out the ass for their service--and not even for the gmail component. Just for the iDisk. When my subscription is up, I'm so history. I know the dev team, I'm so excited for them right now. Cool kids.

- generalsticky, on 03/11/2008, -1/+15If they made this for linux I would definitely use it.
- darktreb, on 03/11/2008, -0/+5I would assume it's in the works. I love and use Linux too, but admittedly it's just not the first priority when you're trying to commercialize a product.
- captmorgan555, on 03/11/2008, -0/+2This is so simple though im sure it wouldn't take much to get it to work.
