- mathchemist, on 03/11/2008, -3/+605I like how in the intro video when he sends the link over IM the guy responds "Why do you keep sending me this crap?".
- lencioni, on 06/19/2008, -4/+483Is it going to be free or cost money?
- umbrae, on 03/11/2008, -4/+353My only concern here is privacy. They need to make it absolutely clear what they do to protect your files, who has access to them, and so forth before it can become useful in businesses.
That said, though, I think this will be hugely useful in a personal context. Great job, guys. - highride, on 03/11/2008, -9/+297Thank god.. I can take my porn anywhere
- mitchellmckenna, on 05/24/2009, -18/+287If this thing is free - I'm sold, insert advertising somewhere - I don't care, just make it free cuz it looks awesome
- koko775, on 03/11/2008, -5/+2211GB free, $$$ for more.
(I talked to the founders at an infosession in Berkeley) - jcusano, on 03/11/2008, -0/+214Haha, and: "The file keira knightley oops HOT!!1.jpg has been updated to the latest version." Definitely one of the better done product demos I've seen in a long while!
- LiquidIse, on 03/11/2008, -25/+216I would almost prefer a nominal fee... keep the servers fast and the web-interface ad-free
- spyrochaete, on 03/11/2008, -1/+151The whole presentation was full of fun little references and jokes. This is one of the best presentations I've ever seen. Informative, to the point, and the jokes made it more engaging.
- melink14, on 03/11/2008, -26/+170I know some of the people on this team, they're amazing and having seen this in action it's the next big thing
- 4d669, on 03/11/2008, -16/+155So this what technology has become... It's not about engineering something innovative anymore, it's about creating something that existed years ago and adding an interface so simple that even a retard could use it.
- Nyctobello, on 03/11/2008, -4/+142How are you sold if it is free?
- 8270369, on 03/11/2008, -0/+117Yes. Yes, it is.
- Angostura, on 03/11/2008, -1/+115Says the man who crafted his response by individually setting the bits in core memory and then sending them to digg via his command-line implementation of HTTP
- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -8/+112Did not seem to mention that Dropbox will be data mining the ***** out of all your personal and business files.
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+95I particularly liked the Chocolate Rain MP3.
- insomniac8400, on 03/11/2008, -4/+96Great features and all, but syncing your private files on someone else's web server isn't good for business. If they sold a server product you could buy and host yourself, this product would really take off.
- brianjlowry, on 03/11/2008, -1/+82What? I can handle looking at a few ads for a free service. I don't even need Adblock, I mentally erased ads years ago.
- PopsGG, on 08/28/2009, -3/+73I love how the video had all sorts of subtle humor in it. There was the chocolate rain mp3, the update on the Keira Knightly picture, and tons more. There guys are clearly very versed in the interwebs.
- ziptnf, on 03/11/2008, -10/+72Did anyone else see the part of the video where he sends a guy that picture, and he says "why do you keep sending me this crap?"
Please don't tell me I'm the only one to notice this. - Aleeb, on 03/11/2008, -1/+61The GigaOM article on this, http://gigaom.com/2008/03/11/drop-it-like-its-drop ... said that they eventually plan to charge for storage, but in the beta stage it's free.
- Manhigh, on 03/11/2008, -8/+67I loved the "Why do you keep sending me this crap?" response on iChat.
- yanivalfasy, on 03/11/2008, -2/+59dugg for "Why do you keep sending me this crap?"
- ePuck, on 03/11/2008, -2/+53Interface is everything. If it's not easy, automatic, people won't use it.
Having to look up svn commands ftl - fkr3, on 03/11/2008, -6/+55Yeah... god forbid anyone but you get paid for their work!
- mozaic2001, on 03/11/2008, -7/+52i am loving it... if it's free .. ; )
- danz32, on 03/11/2008, -4/+47Microsoft already has the same thing...its called Foldershare (www.foldershare.com)
They are basically designed to do the same thing, and Foldershare also works on PC and Macs. I am not sure what the pros/cons of them are, but at the moment they are both free and looking like great ideas for managing files across different computers - MrCalifornia, on 03/11/2008, -0/+39Not an intuitive interface? It's a folder and you put stuff in it and the stuff you put in it shows up on the other computers. How could it be more intuitive?
- NoData, on 03/12/2008, -0/+35there were mp3 players before the iPod too. don't underestimate usability.
- angers, on 03/11/2008, -0/+35Hopefully they release a LInux version because this looks great!
- inactive, on 03/11/2008, -1/+35"to better understand your needs and interests" Thats a bold faced reference to data mining if I have ever heard one.
I like this section on law enforcement:
"Compliance with Laws and Law Enforcement. Dropbox cooperates with government and law enforcement officials and private parties to enforce and comply with the law. We will disclose any information about you to government or law enforcement officials or private parties as we, in our sole discretion, believe necessary or appropriate to respond to claims and legal process (including but not limited to subpoenas), to protect the property and rights of Dropbox or a third party, to protect the safety of the public or any person, or to prevent or stop any activity we may consider to be, or to pose a risk of being, illegal, unethical, inappropriate or legally actionable."
Basically they will act as the thouht police at their sole discretion and allow law enforcement to peruse your files and logs on a whim without a warrant. Ask any lawyer that is exactly what that clause is implying. - canUdi9it, on 03/11/2008, -1/+35Topper says: "That's nothing. I melted the silicon and hand carved my own CPU using really tiny tools and a microscope."
- Aleman360, on 03/11/2008, -2/+35I am sick of dealing with USB drives, email attachments, and file servers. This is awesome!
- mwklein, on 03/11/2008, -2/+34This is perfect... been looking for something like this for quite a long time. Even if it isn't free, it would be worth it.
- 8270369, on 03/11/2008, -1/+33Apple's .mac is an embarrassment. It should be the cream of the crop, but it's not.
- WNW3, on 03/11/2008, -2/+34I saw it, I loled
- thesparrowband, on 03/11/2008, -14/+46here comes another bubble...
- LightSpeed4, on 03/11/2008, -0/+31wtf is a google drive? how can you kill something that doesn't exist.
- designman303, on 03/11/2008, -3/+34I've been using Foldershare for years. Does the exact same thing.
- amg0927, on 03/11/2008, -0/+30I just added the SN to AIM... they guy is online. dotdotdotxpoint.
Here is the convo.

dotdotdotxpoint: what do you keep sending me that crap?
dotdotdotxpoint: :P
I'm sure he wont mind all of digg sending him the same file. - inforan, on 03/11/2008, -9/+38the next billionaires in the making......
- TheDigerati, on 03/11/2008, -0/+27Competition FTW
- ralphthemagi, on 03/11/2008, -5/+30Depends. This is just another Web 2.0 company that's a value add to a bigger company like Google, Yahoo, or Microsoft. If they can ride it out on investment capital until they get acquired, it may be free for a while. If not, you'll have to pay. Because something like this wouldn't be able to make use of Amazon S3, that means the cost would probably be significant. I'd suppose around $5-$10 a month.
- pseudononymist, on 03/12/2008, -1/+24brought to you by Memory EraserĀ®
- pak314, on 03/11/2008, -3/+24Just wipe it off and let it dry it. It should work again.
- subliminalurge, on 03/11/2008, -0/+21Yep, you're catching on.
Actually, that's not really what technology as a whole has become. But if you're in the tech field and looking for a quick way to put together a startup and cash in for big bucks a few years down the road, it seems to be the most consistently effective plan. - solarwind24, on 03/12/2008, -1/+21They invented AES256 for a reason.
- WNW3, on 03/11/2008, -1/+21Privacy agreement looks okay to me...but then I have zero ability to really read one of these things. I dont see any mention of the privacy of your files specifically though. I may have missed it.
http://www.getdropbox.com/privacy - lostarchitect, on 03/11/2008, -1/+20not that this isn't a cool thing, but how are you having trouble copying from windows to mac and back? any usb drive should work fine.
- TWillz, on 03/11/2008, -0/+19TPS Reports and Pets.com executive summary! Nice.
