- ScottMcIntyre, on 10/18/2008, -0/+14This is a brilliant resource list. For quite some time now, I've wanted to use Google docs but didn't know where to start. The Q & As in this article are very clear and helpful. I'm bookmarking this for use later. Example information:
QFA:"Q: Like other Google tools, can I access my Google Docs library from the Firefox Sidebar?
A: Create a bookmark for http://docs.google.com/m and set this to open in Firefox sidebar. You can browse all documents though the sidebar but can’t create new stuff." - AirRaven, on 10/20/2008, -0/+7Installing Google Apps as a Chrome Application with Gears instantly turns it from a curiosity into a full-fledged program.
Really would recommend it to anybody. - Myztry, on 10/20/2008, -0/+5How do you set the spreadsheet to use dollar currency AND DDMMYY date format as used in Australia. You can't !
Apps can handle both the required formats. Just not at the same time. (US or UK, but not AU... Annoying!)
I was all set to transition 30 on the road reps to Google Apps before I found out this show stopper. - nemanin, on 10/19/2008, -0/+4google docs has a ton of potential, but it can be hard to make the switch... especially for the more advanced features. this is a cool guide to help bridge the gap...
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3For a simple Doc processor, then Google may be okay. But I prefer OOo. I'm wary of Google's TOS and of becoming "dependent" upon their software whims. IMHO worth reading: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2328299,00.as ...
- hectord27, on 10/19/2008, -0/+3This doesn't replace office for me in any way but it's definitely a great tool to use. It's saved my ass more than once. :)
- jrattner1, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Looks like we all know who works for Google now ^^^^^^
- SaadGhouri, on 10/20/2008, -0/+3Still doesn't make me switch from Office 2007 or OpenOffice.
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2thanks- i'm DL'ing it now
- thetanman, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Synced it to Evernote. Good tips.
- inactive, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Well, I'm going to assume it will, but at the same time Office will get even faster as well.
- i4ybrid, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2I'm a developer and I work with people in different states and countries. Developing with people you can't see face to face is hard when there is a lot to do and very little time to do it. Collaborating spreadsheets is one of my favorite functions of Google Docs. I create a spreadsheet and we can manage what code has been updated, what code needs to be tested and who wrote them. It is an awesome thing.
I would not store any sensitive information on Google Docs though, Google has a tendency to index every bit of data they can get their hands on... - superjamie, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Awesome article. I thought it was silly to tell people how to use Google Docs, but these are a few really good tricks!
Don't forget the Prism application in Linux can also be used to change Google services to desktop apps.
sudo apt-get install prism-google-docs - AirRaven, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2To install a a Chrome Application, click the "Page" button in the top-right, and select "Create Application Shortcuts...".
If it's a Google App, like Google Docs/GMail, you can either use the above method to get it working instantly, or you can go to the effort of setting up Google Gears- I believe there's an icon in the top-right of GDocs you need to press to install Docs as a Gears application. GMail's equivalent should be shut away in the settings somewhere.
Hope that helps- experiment! - byrdgang, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2How do you know this (the ease and speed with which you open templates on Google docs) won't ever ever ever change?
- byrdgang, on 10/20/2008, -0/+2Unfortunately, Google Docs word processor is terrible with formatting and page layout. If you take text from an external word processor (Word or Writer) and you paste it into Docs, the formatting won't necessarily be preserved.
Also, if you're writing something for school with specific page length requirements, you won't know if you've met the page length requirements unless you copy the text over to a standard word processor. Even Zoho is capable of this.
If it meets these two things (page layout and formatting), I'll gladly dump traditional word processors. I already use Docs, but I'll become an exclusive Docs user as soon as they accomplish this. - championchap, on 10/20/2008, -0/+1Or for Digital Inspiration.
- inactive, on 10/19/2008, -1/+2Google Docs will never ever ever ever replace Word/Openoffice for me. It is just so much easier to open up a template in word and get going in 10 seconds rather than google docs.
I love the service though, great for podcast show notes. - pxlpshr, on 10/19/2008, -0/+1I now live on Google Docs and it's marvelous for collaborating, and when you have multiple computers... I have little use for MS Office these days, but Excel is still very powerful. It will be a long time before Google Docs can compare in that regard.
- seenxu, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1google doc rocks! I hope they could provide us with more advanced text formatting options, so that we can in some day totally replace any other desktop office application.
- jnahc, on 10/21/2008, -0/+1Great guide, I have to use Google Docs all the time since I have to switch computers and these will really come in handy!
- SimpleAlex, on 12/31/2008, -0/+0Nice little guide on google doc

- johnnymusacha, on 10/20/2008, -0/+0How do you install Google Apps as a Chrome application? URL? Thanks
- tikibaloni, on 10/20/2008, -2/+1Google forms pisses me off. They NEED to fix it. It always randomizes the questions
- zyklon, on 10/20/2008, -4/+3Anything and everything, eh?
Does it blend?
