- kewldude606, on 10/12/2007, -4/+24The section that matters: Syncing.
The section that has no content: Syncing. - Bucky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Dugg for the tip about setting your custom view. For me, "Next 4 Weeks" is far more useful than "Next 4 Days" view.
- theantidote, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3There are a few things I would love GCal to do as a student, such as custom keywords for quick add. Also, does anyone know how to specify a calendar with Quick Add, it only seems to add the event to your default calendar.
- cutechimp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The "GVENT" SMS is the only tip that I did not know and is potential useful for me.
For Windows users, there is a very simple parallel to "running Firefox/Camino in the background as a standalone calendar." Just set the Google Calendar webpage as desktop background. Thanks to ajax, you can edit and add events, or switch views just on the desktop, without opening a browser window (which would have been IE). - wqwert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The keyword access hint for firefox is excellent. I can't believe I didn't hear about this sooner. From the article:
In Mozilla-based products, they're called keywords. Once you have a bookmark set for Google Calendar, add a short, simple keyword you'll remember by editing that bookmark's properties in the Bookmark Manager. For Google Calendar, I use gc. Then, even if the Navigation Toolbar is hidden, I hit Cmd-l on my Mac to open a location pane (Ctrl-l on a PC), type gc and hit Enter, and I%u2019m there. Note: This tip applies to any site you access frequently in Firefox, Camino, or Mozilla.
I made a javascript utility to add this functionality ( http://qwert.275mb.com ), but this is much easier. - faxxy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Google Video failed"
That's very very short-sighted, don't ya think? - mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3And a konfabulator/yahoo widget as well.
- jason2584, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"I might just be really ignorant here, but I'm not aware of any other web apps that use keyboard shortcuts."
Gmail makes pretty extensive use of them. They're great. I love Shift-clicking "compose" or "reply" to create my message in a new window. You don't think about it until you have to write an email in Gmail while referencing another email that isn't part of the same conversation. Those guys think of everything. - McDuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2We need a google calendar widget...that'd make it even more awesome, a widget that piggy backed onto isync then sync'd with your phones calendar over bluetooth. With out haveing to do a thing, that'd be awesome... and i have no idea how to make a widget... or even any of that (just a pipe dream of mine) but hint hint for any savy coders out there
- Ryetronics, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Just use TMobile as your provider and it will work with Verizon. It did for me.
- zentro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Video failed? Yes, and that search engine-thingy was nothing short of a fiasco.
- kazem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, and Opera does this by default. In every bookmark you can type a "nickname". So when I type "bank" it takes me to my banking web site's login. Good stuff.
- Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Add this amazing Google Calendar module to your Google Personalized Homepage:
http://www.r2unit.com/gmodule/
Captures recurring events, view multiple calendars, together or separetely, and toggle between them quickly. See details, location without going to Gcal. Email an event to someone. Directly link to Google Maps from a location. Tonnes more.
This module does everything!! And if it doesn't, drop the developer a line, because he's very responsive and works like mad to add really cool features. The best Google Module there is!! - JOJOFACE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Pretty extensive list. I wish Google would allow a WEEKLY agenda, instead of only a daily agenda, to be sent to email.
- osbjmg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Does anyone else have problems with calendars from 30boxes partially synching to google?
- spacebar14, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Didn't know GCal supported HTTPs .. nice to know.
FYI: I just discovered so does Gmail! - deviant87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Keyboard shortcuts! I never thought about those cause Calendar runs inside Firefox!
It's cool to see how advanced web based apps are getting!
I might just be really ignorant here, but I'm not aware of any other web apps that use keyboard shortcuts.
On the other hand:
Although I've never been a fan of using calendar and agenda planning software before, Google Calendar seems to make it simple enough that adding events is not a task in itself.
Well I have to say even though Google Video failed they are still putting out good stuff. - steelphantom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My favorite tip was the one about changing font smoothing settings. I was getting really annoyed by the jaggy text at the top of all of my events.
- oaktree6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I know nothing - little about this stuff but I do want GCal to be my desktop background and I want to be able to edit the calendar from my desktop. How easy is this or what're the steps to do this? Thanks.
- mastercheif, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Where is the hack so I can actually use this on my Verison phone?
- 2drunk2funk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dugg for the hotkey info on article if nothing else !
Being able to put gc into address bar and getting site is great :)
My family have started sharing a calendar, novelty value at the moment but seems to be working great. This and MSN keeps us in contact as we are spread around the country. Good thing keeping family members in touch :D - Quash, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Higher level of privacy than Gmail? I doubt it. Email would be considered very private. As one example, I imagine that Gcal's Events function will be used to sell you items from local merchants that might be useful for your specific event. That's just one example. Remember, Google isn't interested in creating a Calendar, they're interested in creating a Scheduler.
But, mining data (and I'm not a fan, either) from Gmail is really no different than your ISP's Spam filter which searches all your emails for keywords in its effort to filter out Spam for you.
Our data is searched at every level. - ChrisP21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0McDuff -- GCal supports publishing in iCal format, so you don't need iSync to sync iCal with GCal. Just subscribe in iCal to your GCal calendar, then sync with your phone! Go to your GCal page, then select "Calendar settings" in the popup menu in your calendar list on the left. Then click the iCal button under the "Private Address" section, and paste the resulting url into the iCal "Subscribe..." dialog window.
- theschles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Noob question: does Google mine their calendar like they mine gmail? Or is Google Calendar considered as a being on a higher level of privacy?
- deviant87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well, your right, it is being short sighted. And maybe while I'm at it I should rephrase. Look at YouTube. While Google Video is quite easy to use, they haven't got it quite right have they. Really since Google have done so well elsewhere something better than the current incarnation of Google Video was expected. Well it still is in Beta. I'm sure we will see more innovating things to come from them.
