In an IMAP situation, if you delete the message in Outlook, it will also be deleted on the Gmail server. With POP, you're just downloading what's new on the server since your last download. The advantage is having a more streamless email experience without redundancies.

    So by just comparing the size of files that are being transfered IMAP would realistically be faster than POP because, really... who reads every single message that comes at them?

    IMAP isn't great for people who compute offline, though....

    For those who do not know, IMAP stores all your email on the server instead of your email client, so instead of standard POP mail where the message downloads to only one pc/device and you can't read it it on any other device, it is available on as many email clients as you want.

    Half the reason I have my .Mac account is the use of IMAP, so i can check all my emails at work, home and on blackberry.

    From what I've read, IMAP is good because it synchronizes your changes back to the server, instead of just downloading your messages. This means, for example, that folders are the same online and on the desktop.
