http://www.digg.com/software/Gmail_Audio_Player 2371 Diggs - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -7/+34Oh, that'll never do well in the market.
- Kickboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24This feature was added with the new release of GTalk.
In the new GTalk there is a feature for "Voice Mail". Basically a voice mail is just an MP3 emailed to that user. So to compliment this feature, they added a flash app to listen to Voice Mail MP3 files within GMail. Since they were doing this anyway, I guess they just decided to add the player in for all MP3 files across the board. It's a rather nice feature. - kowcop, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21gmail administrators script
find *.mp3
copy to 50TB musicserver - ajamer, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23I've sent mp3s through gmail to friends quite a bit and haven't noticed this feature
when did they add it? - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Everyone knows what DigitalGopher does.... He spams digg with stories, and 30% of them get through. Notice how every 3rd story on Digg is by DigitalGopher? That Nuclear symbol is becoming very prominent. He has submitted 1590 total. A lot of em are Dupes that make it tot he front page.....
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Someone call the RIAA, this can only be used for evil purposes!
- -dXs-, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18Wow.
I didn't realise Google is competing with the ipod.
And here i thought they were just putting a simple playback application in their e-mail service, Gmail. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"I didn't realise Google is competing with the ipod."
Yes becaue we all know we are carrying around our dell laptops in our pockets for the specific purpose of logging into our Gmail accounts to play our music. - IMustBeEmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Where's the OGG playback?!?!
- dylanrjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Also, note that it only shows up if your settings are set to US english. For those of us that prefer using the Queen's English (Canada, UK, Australia, etc) it just shows up as a link. If you can endure losing the 'u' in colour, make the switch.
- Baumer, on 10/12/2007, -16/+25You should check out these. They are a great way to make your music portable.
http://www.apple.com/ipod/ipod.html - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+14Good luck getting it to play long songs. It won't play the 1812 overture.
- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"How long before a full fledged online MP3 playing/storage interface...
They can call it GooMP"
Come on this is google it will be called GooMP Beta - gschoots, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6 Dude, I don't think having a swastika is a proper avatar.......
- AgentBarcode, on 01/11/2009, -3/+8This is very handy if you use Gmail Drive Shell Extension. I have about half of one of my gmail accounts filled with my mp3s that I uploaded with Gmail Drive. Now I can stream my music from any PC.
- donatj, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12they added it when they added the voice mail option to google talk... edit: this has already been said aparently... opened the comments page quite some time ago. Oh well. Mod me down! Woo!
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's not the file format, so much as the implementation of the decoder. Certain MP3 playing apps could possibly have exploits (like Buffer Overflows sort of thing) that'd allow the execution of code.. Thus they, like any other container file, could carry viruses. So far they havent though, but neither had WMFs for a while there ;)
- rolotomasi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6CypherXero: on slashdot you would've been modded +5 Interesting
Unfortunately, for you, this isn't slashdot. - u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3first the ability to search through your emails, then the ever growing storage space, and NOW mp3 playback...
google = supreme overload! - nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've never had a problem attaching .rar's or .zip's (unless they contain .exe files)
- diggeasytiger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I thought it was 10%
Google's employees get free time to work on their own personal tech or other projects.
That's where so many of the labs project come from.
It's a good idea because most tech companies leave there employees twiddling their thumbs half the day. Might as well leverage their bored braincells - Vouksh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yea, I guess his internet took too long to get through those clogged tubes and it lost the sarcasm along the way. Those darn emotions take so long to be forced through the tubes.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, if you want him to tell you to STFU
- afreeland, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6cool for when im at work on tha comp. since were NOT allowed to have mp3 players!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5mistakes, something geeks hate admiting too, sorry I didnt know you were being sarcastic. there tends to be alot of idiots on digg and apparently im one of them ;)
- gschoots, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Google's 20% creativity time is such a great way to push the most out of your employees, more companies should do it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Exactly what I was going to post. I've just started backing up my music library on my gmail account(s) and this will make it even nicer. Music everwhere! :)
- MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5MP3s don't carry viruses?
- Caliente, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4+digg, very cool.
- nogoodreason, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3While it is a Buddhist sign for 'peace', I think I'm inclined to agree with you there.
- jamesvaughn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been using gmail to make portable my music collection since spring '04. Yes I'll take a cookie.
- KhaaL, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nope, MP3's can't be infected with viruses AFAIK.
- diggimator, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1JUST mp3? Wish it could support more formats (like AAC)...
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Technically, the iPod isnt an mp3 player. It plays Apple Lossless, WAV, or AAC files too..... Tell that to your boss!
- scragg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What we need now is playlist support or showing all mp3 attachments in the inbox.
This app is similar http://www.gookbox.com/ - norz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ogg is especially interesting, as it is one of the most efficient codec on low bitrates, as showed by this listening test at 80kbps:
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=35438&view=findpost&p=312298
(Slightly off-topic: for those interested, here are plenty of listening tests, with leading codecs, at various bitrates:
http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Listening_Tests ) - diggimator, on 12/25/2008, -0/+1Hmm, I wonder if you can upgrade the audio quality if you have thousands of encodings of the same song...
- synystar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I noticed this feature about a week ago. It works as a personal small jukebox especially well because of labels -- artist, genre, year, etc.
- mackdaddy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Can someone please send me a Gmail invite. I've looked everywhere on the internet. No one sends me an invite. :-( I know digg has kind people. Please send me an invite.
For the kind soul who would like to help me, please use my msn id to send it. - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4TheReport: "sarcasm" - it happens from time to time on the internets.
- Mike89, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Omfg, are you kidding? You can signup straight from the Gmail home page now!
- mayostard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2And what was that IP address?
- Horizon, on 10/12/2007, -7/+7Cool. If I weren't such a loser on my dialup, I'd try it. :( Guess I'll take your word for it though.
:D - Acidosis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Dude I would If I knew how to find your msn address, where the hell is it?
Thats ok, found it- sent invite. - AudriusM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well, that's only proves that Gmail is cool!
- brydude, on 10/12/2007, -10/+9@Xero:
