- blarz, on 12/04/2007, -3/+59Mmmmm ... COLORS! My inbox is so pretty now... :)
- roadkillkid, on 12/04/2007, -0/+43Nice. One thing to note from the article:
"P.P.S. Several new features we've launched, including colored labels, only work in the newest version of Gmail, currently available for IE7 and Firefox 2. Please upgrade your browser to start using those features now." - Jacob3d, on 12/04/2007, -2/+37Awesome addition, productivity +50
- petebot, on 12/04/2007, -1/+35Jesus Christ, was there ever a reason to switch to hotmail or yahoo? I mean, having to click through 1 or 2 pages just to get to your inbox, ridiculous banner ads, SPAM, etc.
- tarkam, on 12/04/2007, -0/+32Combine it with Gmail's Filters to automatically add a tag by sender, subject or topic.
Remember that it supports "wildcards" meaning you can add a color coded label "WORK" to everyone with an email address from @my_workdomain.com. - vofuse, on 12/04/2007, -5/+33This is without a doubt one of the greatest technological advances of the 21st century.
- exscind, on 12/04/2007, -0/+27Still in beta. :)
- austenw, on 12/04/2007, -2/+23God I love Gmail. Any reason there ever may have been to switch to Hotmail or Yahoo has completely disappeared.
- dcharti, on 12/04/2007, -0/+20And just this weekend I finished rerouting all my e-mail accounts into Gmail so I can use either the web UI or a client via IMAP if my work needed it. I was just thinking today that I missed being able to label my messages with color in my desktop client and was considering installing Greasemonkey in Firefox just for that ability. Now I'm glad I don't have to; this works much, much better.
- WallnutBoy, on 12/04/2007, -1/+20Who cares?
- MonsterChaOS, on 12/04/2007, -1/+18...and the best keeps getting better
- DjArcadian, on 12/04/2007, -0/+17Why does Google Apps never get the good stuff regular Gmail gets? Google Apps is still using the old version of Gmail. At least they gave it Imap.
- mcnab32, on 12/04/2007, -0/+15Nice! This is actually very helpful for me. I recieve a lot of my bills (and notifications online). I used to have a "Bills" label which I applied to them (but they easily got lost). Now I can easily spot the bills I need to pay as I've made labels (Bills Paid) and (Unpaid Bills). in contrasting colours.
Go Gmail!...... - missingnoh4x, on 12/04/2007, -0/+15That's grammatically correct.
- arjie, on 12/04/2007, -0/+13Ha ha, I see ironing
- dxgg, on 02/05/2008, -1/+13I can't believe that I just clicked 4 levels this thread...and for what? :/
- m00nmaster, on 12/04/2007, -1/+12Not to mention full encrpytion on all email related duties. https://mail.google.com
- insertAliasHere, on 12/04/2007, -0/+11Also, they added IMAP.
- flatsodadotcom, on 12/04/2007, -0/+11Any word on when these changes hit Google Apps?
- missingnoh4x, on 12/04/2007, -1/+11They've refined the spam filter to nigh-impenetrability, added some RSS and XML feed interaction, and added plenty of features.
- daveisfera, on 12/04/2007, -5/+15Ya, but what GMail user that actually cares about something like this isn't already using IE7 or FireFox 2?
- drewquinton, on 12/04/2007, -1/+11this is extremely well written
i love google and their playful sense of humor - tucktan, on 12/04/2007, -0/+9it works on Safari 3 also
- isuisorisuaint, on 12/04/2007, -4/+11you suck at gmail.
- palmerized, on 12/04/2007, -1/+8I have multiple email accounts sent to my Gmail account. This makes it very quick and easy to see what's in my Inbox. This is one of those simple features that makes you say "why the hell wasn't this done ages ago?"
- wphj, on 12/04/2007, -1/+7And Safari...
- kiiwii, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6Oh, nevermind... there's an arrow next to the filter names on the left, by clicking it you can choose which color is which.
- dcharti, on 12/04/2007, -0/+6Download Squad is right: Despite the Gmail Blog saying this only works in IE7 and Firefox 2, I can see the label colors and their corresponding customization options in the new Gmail in Safari 3. Rock.
- awhiteflame, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5They tend to roll out any change by acct creation date. I got IMAP on my Google Apps acct immediately, but my friend's brandy new gmail acct (~12 mo. old) didn't get it for a couple weeks later. I don't think it makes a difference (or if so, not much) that it's Google Apps
- daveisfera, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5The spam filter is REALLY good, but I still get at least 4-5 spams a week.
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+5when i'm at my google personalized page, with gmail on it, if i click a specific email , it opens, i don't get any option to delete it, or go back to the inbox, without exiting that window and then clicking "inbox" this is a real pain, anyone else notice?
- thebellmaster1x, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5There is no facepalm big enough for this post.
- gcnaddict, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6This has to be one of the most productive changes I've seen in GMail to date.
- anahnymous, on 12/04/2007, -2/+6Works for me.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9b2pre) Gecko/2007120204 Minefield/3.0b2pre - unloud, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5This makes me want to go click on advertisement in my inbox out of love for Google!
- shotgunefx, on 12/04/2007, -0/+4Awesome, it's the only feature I've really wanted. Good to know they listen.
- capeguy, on 12/04/2007, -1/+5its already making my gmail much easier to sort thru
- tehdave, on 12/04/2007, -4/+8Its about time. Goodbye inconsistent Greasemonkey script
- mahoua, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Please upgarde your spelling capabilities, nevioth.
And your browser too. Welcome to the post-2001 Internet - techpr, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3ok it's now working on my Debian-Firefox 2.0.0.8. Had to do Shift-F5 to completely reload the page. Sorry for the first comment.
- ultrafez, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Well you know what to do then...
- stutimandal, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3The feature may be new to Gmail, but 6 generic labels (to do, important, etc) have been there in Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla Mail since 3-4 years.
Hint: Press Keys 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 when a mesg. in Mozilla Thunderbird is open to see the colors. - monsieurflibble, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Seems that you don't get this unless your language is set to 'English (US)'. Mine is set to 'English (UK)', and if I change it, I get coloured labels. Unfortunately, changing it back removes the feature :(
- inactive, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3+10,000 for stating the obvious. Attention Google brainiacs: labels != sorting. Sorting = display order by ascending/descending rank. Please add this 1980's functionality to GMail!!!
- Blubi, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Wow, not only colored labels work in Safari, I just realize that even gTalk is working now and even that it is possible to sign in into AIM!
- krets, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3It's new to Google dummy and that was the point of the article.
- motang, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Sweet addition, makes it more usable.
- cciulla, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3Now, if they could only add sorting (e.g., sort by Sender, Sent Date, etc.)
- emehrkay, on 12/04/2007, -0/+3I dont see them in safari (windows) yet. Why doesnt chat work in safari?
- Toupee, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Sweet, cause I was using the Greasemonkey script to do something very similar to this, but this is a little nicer.
Also, you can now talk to people with AIM usernames through Gmail's chat! Check it out! Go to Options > Sign in to AIM... -
