Gmail is typically very stable, and it's odd that one part of it would go down while you can still maintain access through another venue (like the iphone). I'm not sure, haven't read all of it, but I don't see much whining, just suprise and confusion about the way it went/is going.

jwalker - I am sorry you feel so strongly about such a great organization. Even though they fell down for a short while they have accomplished an innovatively changed all of our lives enabling us to communicate and stay in touch world wide at the touch of a button. Call centres are costly generally and generally useless. Google basically runs the internet and will know there is a problem before anyone could pick up a phone and ask. They were likely aware of the problem before any of use even realized it. Lets face it we all fall down and bump our knees now and again.
