Gmail Audio Player
4work.pl — Gmail has a built-in player for MP3 attachments. If you receive emails that include MP3 files (maybe a podcast or a public domain recording), you can listen them directly from Gmail.

- saqib, on 10/12/2007, -191/+6Actually Fabrik provides a much better solution than GMAIL for organizing media files. The only catch is that it cost $30/year, but provides unlimited storage.
Fabrik is a AJAX based web app for File Management on a WebServer. It allows for File Explorer like drag and drop capability through a browser, and DOES NOT require refreshes. It has built-in plug-ins for all major media formats. It is currently available for Beta Testing. The service will cost $30/year, or $799 to buy the product to host your own

PS, where can I get a job commenting too? - Strangers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+113Am I the only one who always reads these comments that are dugg down? :(
- nandorocker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+49I read them too. I never get myself to change the setting, though. I like having to lift up the comment before reading it. A thrill of modern life.
- ochito, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26@Strangers: Evidently not, or they wouldn't get so many more negative diggs below most people's threshold. I'm guilty of also taking a peek every now and then, but I've found 99.9% of the time I agree with my fellow diggers and just digg it further down without even needing to read them all the way through
- isemism, on 10/12/2007, -16/+35SPAM Breakfast Burritos:
Heat oven to 400'F. In bowl, beat together SPAM, eggs, and milk. Melt butter in large skillet; add egg mixture. Cook, stirring, to desired doneness. Fill each tortilla with SPAM mixture and half of cheeses. Roll burrito; place seam side down on 12x8" baking dish. Sprinkle remaining cheese over top of burritos. Bake 5-10 minutes of until cheese is melted. Serve with salsa. - bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -21/+22Scene: A cafe. One table is occupied by a group of Vikings with horned helmets on. A man and his wife enter.
Man: Well, what've you got?
Waitress: Well, there's egg and bacon; egg sausage and bacon; egg and spam; egg bacon and spam; egg bacon sausage and spam; spam bacon sausage and spam; spam egg spam spam bacon and spam; spam sausage spam spam bacon spam tomato and spam;spam spam spam egg and spam; spam spam spam spam spam spam baked beans spam spam spam; or Lobster Thermidor a Crevette with a mornay sauce served in a Provencale manner with shallots and aubergines garnished with truffle pate, brandy and with a fried egg on top and spam.
http://bau2.uibk.ac.at/sg/python/Scripts/TheSpamSketch - Zarks, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Why is it that an irrelevant spam recipe is being modded up but the hilarious monty python sketch from which spam email got its name is being modded down?
Shame on you diggers. - Giever, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I think it's because:
A) The entire quote was too long for most diggers, especially since they knew what it was right away.
B) He should've implemented the reference into a comment, ie. "Don't forget the SPAM bacon SPAM eggs, coffee SPAM SPAM and SPAM eggs!" Or something like that at least.

- Topher06, on 10/12/2007, -27/+10This is fantastic because I get SOOO many Gmails with mp3's in them and there are just no other great tools or applications that lets me play them.

- BrokenBeta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's for the "voicemail" capability of Google Talk. That's why it's there, and I've been so hoping they would do it so I wouldn't have to crack open Winamp each time someone left me a message. Yay!
- norz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except my messages are in .au format, which is currently not supported.
Also: to get greater quality at low bitrates, I use ogg vorbis, which is also not supported.
.au is a simple audio format, and vorbis a patent-free one with open-source software, so they shouldn't be to hard to implement. (Except it has to run with flash, don't know much about this technology.)
- norz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Except my messages are in .au format, which is currently not supported.
- traemccombs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I just tried to play a song I had, and it actually slowed the song down, which had the effect of putting it in a different key. Quite odd.
I'm on Ubuntu Linux Dapper Drake, anyone else experience this as well?- bobothn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3no but dont update your xorg
- Bloc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Doesn't seem to be available for UK users yet...
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It also won't play long songs. I can't seem to make it play the 1812 Overture, but Shook me all Night long seems to work fine.
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -13/+2Why the hell does it take them so long to do basic stuff like this? They did it for music, you'd think they would have also supported video files. After all the code is already out there for google video - nothing new to create. Sometimes I think Google is really getting complacent. Even the most obvious and basic things are beginning to take so long. How can 300 paid employees take forever to create an applet to synch Outlook to Google Calendar whereas open source developers are 10 times faster at updating their Firefox extensions.
- bbatsell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11The code for Google Video would not at all work for playing inline video in e-mail. Google Video plays Flash video (flv), whereas 99% of e-mailed video would be in other formats. Implementing Google Video in Gmail would require Google to convert the video to flv upon receipt, which would require significant processing power simply because of the huge number of people using Gmail; however, unlike Google Video, there is very little payoff for all that required processing — only one person would see the result of it.
- dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Well, this conversion could be done at clientside also, right? As far as being efficient is concerned, I've noticed that Google will re-scan attachments for e-mails each time you log in and out and change browsers and re-open the same attachment in the e-mail.
You would think that after scanning an attachment once, it would be flagged somewhere so that there is no requirement for any re-scanning. Likewise if an e-mail from Gmail is forwarded to another gmail user, it should have to re-scan at the recipient side since the attachment was scanned once and has not ever (practically) travelled outside the Gmail conduit. - mrvalue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@dextroz:
But what if the attachment had a brand new virus that had not yet been identified? It might pass the first scan or even the second, but that doesn't mean it's actually safe. Having it rescanned ensures that the file is checked for the newest viruses which, typically, are the ones you would be receiving via email. - dextroz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@mrvalue:
Good point.
- toe_head2001, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4samet hing is in googe reader for podcasts
- repruhsent, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Yeah, a "public domain recording." *wink*
- jdawg19, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8+10 coolness for google!
- MrSunshine, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4I check my gMail account through POP using Thunderbird. How do I benefit from this exciting new function?
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Start using the web interface.
- krewenki, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Quite obviously, you don't :)
- ralcocer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"maybe a podcast or a public domain recording", or maybe that illegal copy of your favorite band's new album that your friend sent you.
- geoffct, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Did anyone else's play at 2x speed?
- person, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2was it a vbr track?
- person, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2nevermind... I just tested a vbr file.. and it works just fine, besides the fact that Google calculates the end of the song as File Size divided by Bitrate. And when you have a variable bitrate, the resulting song duration fluctuates. But it didn't play twice as fast.
I haven't gotten anything to play twice as fast. Maybe your computer was just spazzing. - greengenes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some players (Flash) have problems with mp3's encoded at a sample rate that is not a multiple of 11.025 kHz.
- maxstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So does GMail allow larger attachments now?
- bedlam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=8770 - crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Not officially. But I've sent attachments as large as 12mb in the past from gmail to gmail.
- Jonbo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1@crimson117: FYI, 12mb < 10MB.
- bedlam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2No
- dep01, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Riiiiiight... a podcast or a public domain recording. yeaaahhhh...
- crimson117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It's not a gmail audio player, it's a flash applet. You need macromedia flash viewer installed for it to work.
When I heard gmail audio player, I was all ready for some crazy ajax audio implementation :)- centinall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For the longest time, I really thought Flash was just for over the top sites like 2advanced.com and likes. But I have to say that ever since youtube, google video, etc... I'm really starting to appreciate Flash when it's used right. I just hope that all operating systems/browsers will get versions of Flash to keep up to date with the applets being written.
I also notice that google now scans mp3 files (maybe all files) for viruses before you can download/view/play. Again, they've done this with "AJAX".
- centinall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8For the longest time, I really thought Flash was just for over the top sites like 2advanced.com and likes. But I have to say that ever since youtube, google video, etc... I'm really starting to appreciate Flash when it's used right. - rwinograd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1This is a great idea for one specific reason. Someone should totally make a web app / fire fox extension that will allow you to upload all your files to gmail by mailing them to yourself. Then you could use your gmail site like a media player and there would be no need to use winamp.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Um, no.
- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow, there already is. It's called Gspace. (***** you, I'm to lazy to give a link)
- thestorey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Time to start emailing myself all my music. I can finaly use up my hefty almost 3 gigs.
- jamez515, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just recieved a few the other day from a friend of mine she left some voicemails which were embedded into the email. The only problem is the limited functionality. This feature would be useful for emailing mp3's to friends and they would be able listen inside the broswer window without having to download locally.
- VargVikernes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What I hate about Gmail is that it doesn't allow me to send .exe files. Even if you try zipping and .exe, Gmail will look into the archive and won't allow emailing it. The only solution (that I know of) is to use a rar archive.
- tadunne, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I think flash can now use audio input from your computers Mic (With your permission)
Maybe they can extend the gmail version of google talk to use some kind of flash thing to do Voip? that would be cool.. - calande, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sweet :)
http://mail.google.com/mail/html/audio.swf?audioUrl=http://www.auriance.com/docs/tmp/Spectral%20-%20kundalini.mp3- mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Wow, you're a *****.
- Universal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can also listen to audio/music via a secure connection, just make the link like https://mail.google.com/mail/html/audio.swf?audioUrl=MP3_URL (MP3_URL being the link to audio/music on the web).
Just an observation. - input, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Did anyone discover an autoplay option?
- pasteler0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Here too
http://www.ovelha.org/pasteler0/2006/08/22/new-gmail-player/ - burnflare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wow
- basjanssen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I forward all my pop-email to my gmail. I like the way it works with conversations and I think this new built in mp3 utility (well.. 'new'.. at least I didn't know about it yet) is very... very handy. Can I assume Gmail 'does' video too?
- Securityguru, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Google reader was first. Now GMail gets into the action. This seems to me like Google is begging people to upload their mp3 collections to the web. ;)
- placain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I love how the example code that you're told to "pasate" [sic] is wrong (it uses smart quotes, and the closing tag is broken).
Yet none of the dozens of blogs that have copied this guy's article nearly verbatim have noticed this - they've just copied the code as-is, seemingly not realizing that it doesn't actually work... - h4lofourt33n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2*cough* There's already a greasemonkey script for this.
- dark_ryan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This has been out longer than ppl think. I went on vacation, and I just returned. I left Friday Nite :-(, and I saw this same feature in my G-Mail, when a friend sent me a voice-mail message. And this was Thurday. Anyway, cool feature :-).
- zishank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But it doesn't seem to work well with Internet Explorer.
