- crispytown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is not AJAX. Please read the info first.
the next 0.9.0, full based on AJAX technology.
They are still in the 0.8.X range so no ajax. - jasonhazel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://eyeos.masquedominios.com/ - one of the demo servers, use login/pass of demo/demo.
it doesn't seem to be entirely ajax-y. when you open an application it loads a new page (same page, different flags).
does anyone find the fact that it has a webbrowser kind of redundant? - jamiequint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How about this....if you open eyeOS and go to the browser then type in the address of the eyeOS you are currenty running, it opens another instance of this from within the browser within itself. So, I am writing this from a browser within a browser within a browser within a browser, pretty cool huh?
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I just don't see why anyone would want to bog themselves down with another "operating system" placed on top of whatever they are using now.
It's not like anything in EyeOS is terribly intuitive or even useful. - Xenoxi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its a nice implementation but I think its redundant in the long run, I can't see who would use it really. Either way it sure looks nice! Dugg.
- GenghisKhan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ groverallnight. The beauty is that it works from every PC. Everywhere. Modern PCs are fast enough for an extra layer doing office type stuff.
You do not judge your office-suite for it's FPS. I think it is a great product. And hope something big will back it one day.
Yet, if you do not travel much (for example, not to flame; 'you' in general) I can understand its use is limited. - hollismb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The best use for it, assuming it's got a browser, which seems to be the case, would be for working around a pesky work firewall/proxy filter.
- bbowyer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That poor server is getting a digg whipping
- drye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@ groverallnight
The advantage to an "online OS" is that people in the future will have there personal OS's at any "terminal" There is much speculation that hotels will come standard with a computer and highspeed Internet connection, a user would then have access to there files and OS by simply logging in to the site. I think this is very cool and that google will head in this direction some day. - spyres, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can see some of this tech being useful for portals and so on.

http://www.protopage.com -- submitted a few days ago. - ThomS, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@hollismb Yes, it does have a rather nice browser.
I think one of the best features that hasn't been mentioned so far is that its completely extensible so once interest increases, hopefully quite a few apps will start popping up. - zyphbear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0this reminds me of the old webos.com (aka HyperOffice)
- tpv2066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I find this great! I can take notes in class and have them everywhere I am. Def a great Find
Digg+++++++ - ripter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's an interesting concept But I have a hard time seeing practical usages. I'm all for doing 'Just because you can' or to 'Show that its possible'. I tried it out and it looks really nice!
- groverallnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Re: GenghisKhan, drye, linsys
No, I don't travel much and I'm not in the IT business. I still don't see EyeOS being an interesting or terribly useful application at the moment. The idea is great (portable OS that can be accessed on any computer), but this implementation of it is, in my opinion, fairly lacking.
I can't think of anything that EyeOS does that can't be done just as easily somewhere else on the web...but then again, maybe some people need a standardized model for interacting with things. - jamiequint, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is very cool, right now I am commenting from within the eyeOS browser, running within my regular browser, awesome!
- sebzilla, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who else remembers desktop.com? They got tons of money and were doing this stuff 5 years ago. It went nowhere. Why? Because really, not enough people need this stuff.. There are easier and better options.
- spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is by far the best application of AJAX I've seen to date.
Great digg, and I'll be keeping track of this one. - panique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0AJAX my ass. Sure it's pretty and all but every time I click something, a POST or GET is sent to the web server, thus it is not very Asynchronous.
- herchenx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My eyes bled for a little while, but the idea is definitely cool and it seems like the development is coming along well.
Nice App!
+digg - Glidedon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got a version for Pocket PC ?
- bigdc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Only 76 days late.

The "system" is user ratings, I would definitly air on the side of democratic rather than arbitrary, seriously, get over it. :-P - bloodguard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1 "Please set permissions of 0777 on the following directories : /etc /home /usr"
ummm, no.
-digg - jacobrich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems like something Google would want to use... replace the desktop PC with a browser.
- tornpage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Got it - install was a breeze. This could be really useful in a public environment like a coffee shop. You could set it as a windows active desktop and users could later access their documents from home.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0its pretty cool, but it would be really useful if you can just have a simple terminal server that booted right to this.
+digg - drakaan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can definitely see making something useful out of it.
If nothing else, it's a decent database-less web portal.
As has been said already, it's not AJAXed yet, but it's still shiny. - fffizzz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Please set permissions of 0777 on the following directories : /etc /home /usr"
ummm, no.
-digg
Umm, learn to read... no / in front of those dirs.. its the name of the directories under your webroot, for example /home/sites/yourdomain.com/public_html/etc
Just an fyi... - brucebeh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow, this is something really cool.
- bobo7795, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's pretty much Goowy or whatever. No digg here.
- J3bu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This app is rather nice. It's a little slow to load, it reloads the page everytime you open a new window, they could've done this without the reload. However it seems pretty stable, nice looking, good graphics and design. However it lacks features but it's still in its early stages and you can always write your own. Got it running on my server now, nice!
Digg! - konstratos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They need upgrade their web servers because their site's being totally dugg. A good concept, looking forward to trying it.
- 0n7R, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0downloading right now. looks great and full of expansion possiblities.....
- en3r0, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Sounds like a great app.
