Wow, it works! - behn1220, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32I wish there was a way to automatically filter out any comment on Digg that contained the letters "FTW". A similar filter would be nice for "pwn", "tubes" and all the other geeky fad phrases that are funny for a week but used for a lifetime. Sorry...I'm bitter today. :)
- fernando26, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@behn1220:
Filters like that would pwn Digg's tubes. Automatic filters FTW! :P
Seriously though, have any of you guys tried "Folder Size"? VERY awesome program and very unobtrusive. It adds a column to explorer windows, so you can see a folder's entire size. Check it out:
http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/ - freegrace, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This program just freed up some major space on my two computers. I use a program called Folder share to move and sync files between my laptop and desktop. I would drag a tv show I had downloaded to folder that would then sync the file to my laptop. My wife and i could then watch the show in in our bedroom, living room, plane, where ever. Long story short I was begin to wonder why my hard drive was so full. Turns out folder share has it own trash folder hidden. I had hours and hours of video files still on my computer that I thought were gone!
Can't say I have been this excited about a shareware program in a long time. - mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Heh, heh, first I thought it said "Visualize your hard drug usage."
- Tordenflesk, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Spacemonger FTW!
- brianez21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7DiskInventoryX is a cool similar tool for Macs.
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/diskinventoryx.html - TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4UPDATE: Oooh, apparently WinDirStat is a clone of KDirStat for Linux. I'm sold now.
http://kdirstat.sourceforge.net/
...and I just looked at screenshots of Spacemonger, it (visually) looks like crap. - Auzimov16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4spacemonger wins.
- TheBarge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I prefer jDiskReport. I know it's written in Java but it's still good and multiplatform. It's also simple as it just scans a drive (or folder) and presents you with a pie chart so you can drill down to the folders holding the most data.
- 4Prophecy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Download link for NT, 2000, 2003, and XP.
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/windirstat/windirstat1_1_2-exe-unicode.zip?download - raynar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5only if you want to hear "is it in?"
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All of these programs are great, why can't they build something like it into operating systems anyway?
- agentVivid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah i've used spacemonger and it does the trick... don't use it if you expect fancy gradient fills!!! look for SpaceMonger v1.4.0 because it's the free version
- gdaws, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3If you're in kde, try Filelight.
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=9887 - greyfade, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@thespace: the du command is included on every Linux, BSD, and MacOS X distribution since time immemorial.
no, really.
(oh, and FSV, the filesystem visualizer, which does the same thing as jDiskReport, is available on linux as well.) - bigtomrodney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2WinDirStat just looks a lot like Konqueror's filesize view. Very handy all the same, I've never been able to do this in Windows.
- cosmotic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2God is that app ulgy! Plus, I dont think that this belongs on the front page seeing as how its old, a dupe, spam, and a million other alternitives exist.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@Sockpuppets: WTF?! QUIT READING MY HARDDISK!!
- dickeytk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i like treesize
http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/
been using it for years, who needs bump mapping on this sort of thing? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
For those that haven't tried JDiskReport then you're missing out on the BEST disk usage visualizer out there. It's fast and good looking. Give it a try. For those Java haters, well you know where you can go. - fivestarsoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I use something similar to this, called JDiskReport. Website at http://www.jgoodies.com/freeware/jdiskreport/
Free, of course! - runep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Try something like "du -b * | sort -rn" or make a sort replacement (in perl).
- algorythm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1awesome! i was just trying to remember what this program was called today!
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1my personal favorite: http://foldersize.sourceforge.net/
installs to windows explorer to look like the current "size" field but it shows folder size as well. very handy - asteron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I second the folder size recommendation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2niiiiice dude, thanks!!
- thebusdriver, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, I was just looking for a program like this, awesome.
- coolbru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kCacheGrind uses the same kind of display for visualising code execution timings when profiling, so you can drill straight to your bottlenecks. Totally rocks.
- ajamer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree, it's simple and free
http://www.sixty-five.cc/sm/v1x.php - bleonard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its cute, but i want to see distribution over individual platters visualized
- maxium, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you spend your time attacking pron sites please share your winnings with the rest of us
~M - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I use Folder Size. It integrates nicely with Windows explorer
- NeoPlatonist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I discovered WinDirStat here a while back but it is definitely worth the second digg. There is an equivalent to WinDirStat for mac called Disk Inventory X. http://www.derlien.com/
Edit: beat me to it. - SteveMax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1du -h | sort -n will not work that well. It will sort numerically, so "2TB" is less than "10kb" (it ignores the alphabetical part).
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Personally, I use munin to track disk usage over time, and the du tool to figure out what's hogging drive space. I highly recommend both if you run linux servers with no GUIs.
- tfinniga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WinDirStat, KDirStat, and Disk Inventory X all share some of the same code base, for Windows, Linux (KDE), and OSX, respectively.
Here are the respective URLs:

This is cool - It helped me find some obscure stuff I had forgot about - WeSaluteYou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jesus, I just found a 55 gig rainbow table, along with 250 gigs of porn that I though I had deleted XD (having 1.4TB disk space is nice)
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1konqueror does this quite well, always liked that feature and thought it'd be a good feature to have in windows.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used TreeSize today to free up space for a Vista upgrade. I agree that it's awesome.
- doppler00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made a program like this once in Java, but it actually drew a 3D tree (like a plant) out of your hard drive structure. Can't say it was very practical. Wish I had time to redo this using a moderm API (Java3D sucked).
http://home.comcast.net/~blakemason/tree/index.html - Onibus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ace Utilities does roughly the same thing as this program, just without the fancy graph. Not to mention it has a registry/temp cleaner/auto-start manager; works great as a computer administrator for a building :).
http://www.acelogix.com/ - kimos, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Super helpful! Just what I was looking for. Thanks!
Updated link:
http://www.derlien.com/ - linuxeventually, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1On Windows, use SequoiaView. *looks at screenshots* Hey, they ripped off SequoiaView!
- TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1WinDirStat is awesome. It seems bizarre at first, but it's an excellent way of figuring out why your hard drive is so full.
du doesn't cut it. It can't tell me at a glance, after a single "go" command, which is the largest file on my hard drive, what percentage of my files are mp3s or avis, or let me quickly delete large directories that I know I don't use anymore.
Even though you would think hard drive space is about numbers, dealing with that information visually is entirely different and far more intuitive. Give it a shot. - xamox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, I've used JDiskreport forever. I love that it can use JNLP. It's awesome for tracking down large temp files, because good ole' windows isn't very good at getting rid of them.
- MavicA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yay! Love the app in the first image (SeqoiaView) and not only because it's from my university ;)
Edit: Hmm, apparently someone stole the idea: http://www.win.tue.nl/seqoiaview/ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i.disk http://www.memecode.com/idisk.php is the smallest and the best software around.I have been using it since years.Needs no installation.Just a standalone .exe .
- AgentAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've just been using regular Sequioaview for quite some time.
