- blandthrax, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3These are mine. Which means, what I personally have to have on my computer on a day-to-day basis. If I'm going to rebuild my system (which I'm doing right now), these are the proggies I can't do without:
+Firefox
+Thunderbird
+OpenOffice (or just writer and calc which is all I need)
+DVD decrypter and DVDshrink
+Winamp (I have a ton of .ogg files)
+Picassa 2
+Quicktime alternative
+Real alternative
+Irfanview
+Bittorrent
+Gaim
+Clamwin
+Spybot
+Acrobat reader or some alternative
That's the end of the free programs. Others are as follows:
+Nero burning rom
+PowerDVD - kaczus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0something's wrong with new line signs here
huh? - fritts1227, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would have put AVG on that list
- kaczus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0let's see...rnfirefox,thunderbird,pan,gaim,gnumeric,abiword,gimp,mplayerrnno AV/FW unless you're going to use these under windows...rnif not add these:rngnomebaker, grip, gimageview, giftoxic, bluefish or leafpad (depending on needs), liferea, mpd/gmpc combo and i could go on... but I guess no-one is going to make a switch to anything -nix anyway :
- mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Free defrag - O&O Defrag 2000 Freeware Ed - http://www.oo-software.com/en/products/ood2000free/
Free video editing - Avid Free DV - http://www.avid.com/freeDV/index.asp - Anargeek77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0REAL GENIUS!
- alpha-male, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Too bad they didn't include a free anti-virus alternative to Norton.
- chr15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does anyone have any recommendations for a free disk defragmentor and a free video editing program?
- MrDolomite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Ok, the FoxItReader replacement for the Adobe BloatWare PDF reader rocks. Dugg!
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Lame, they include ad-aware instead of spybot.
- falloutsyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0umm wheres gaim?
- redalert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1These packs are designed for people who know nothing about computers and therefore can not form their own opinions on which software is the best. While we are able to decide for ourselves which features we need, some people need a little help discovering good software.
- mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My list is a collection of freeware and everything else from being an IT tech adding sites that help me at work.
http://www.jk.net.au/tech/ - OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Note: Sygate Firewall Pro has been discontinued after Symantec acquired the company. That means it is "freeware" now if you can get a copy of it. It is better than Zone Alarm, which interferes with p2p, games and uses more memory.
I'd also add Media Player Classic and Zoom Player to the list of players besides VLC. They say VLC can play anything, but it has trouble with some Xvids using FFDShow that play fine through MPC and ZP.
Anyway, these "packs" are a bunch of nonsense. Use whatever apps work.
There no pack! - mistajon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice list... I still prefer my list :)

Pretty easy... - troydoogle7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Love the fox reader......
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Too bad they didn't include a free anti-virus alternative to Norton."
http://www.clamwin.com/ - hriwo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1packs are useless
there is going to be atleast one program in every pack that someone hates, why does anyone need a pack anyway... - SnowSurfns, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i didnt know about audacity to record internet radio, i love you sirius ;)
- TWiTarmy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0packs suck, the only good one is SfSS.
- aluminumpork, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I actually quite liked the list. I even found some things that I hadn't heard of. Like VideoLAN, I'm lovin that. +digg from me.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It uses PhoneHomeAlarm (http://www.digg.com/software/Zonealarm:_A_Perfect_Spyware_), this story is becoming a blog-sig tank, and I still use Adobe Reader (it's not THAT slow).
"iTunes
Some quickly-addressed yet shady privacy issues with the new release aside, iTunes still handles my 55 gigabyte music collection like a champ."
Not to mention it gives money to the RIAA.
Some other nice software here, but No Digg. - hybrid8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0people fail to realize google pack isnt for Geeks, but much rather the parents and granparents and sisters and such of geeks, who dont know what OpenOffice is comapered to MS Office
- leonbev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I STILL like MY list of free software better, dammit! :)
http://tjfreesoftware.blogspot.com/ - trvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0what about "software for starving students"? http://mirror.softwarefor.org/index.html
it was on digg awhile back...its great - TheNik, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Free AV software? Avast!
Also, this stuff would need a DVD to fit it all. :P - bennyb1anco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0ClamWin does not provide a real-time scanner, you must manually scan files.
AVG Free seems to be the most effective and efficient free AV software for most people. - veracon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0This is what a good pack should contain:
- Firefox
- Thunderbird
- OOo
- AVG Free OR ClamWin
- emacs
- Gaim - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0starving student pack was very cool but not quite what i want.
- pgm_01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Foobar 2000
EAC+LAME
Audacity
VLC
Picasa
IRfanview
Gimpshop
ABC
AD-Aware, Spybot and Microsoft AS
Wallwatcher, getlog
Regcleaner
Eraser
PC Inspector File recovery, Smart Recovery
PE Builder
Autostreamer
Belarc Advisor, Everst Home
NVU
Open Office
Just to name a few. - dingledoink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Grisoft's AVG is a great AV program.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Packs are are cool for people like me hired to help people with their computers. Or a one stop shop for ignorant realatives. I a not going to digg this though as i was hopping it was actually a pack.
The google pack sucked but included a decent updater and was actually a pack//
We do need an open source pack..with an open source updater.. I will never use it on my own computer but bet i would use it very often. - randal2k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"These are mine. calmwin?! not AVG? i like AVG. but love the above list.
i would also add skype and NVU - ezkiel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I NEED an itunes alternative. Im back on Winamp for now. But ever since iTunes was packaged with QT7 (to PC what WMP is to Mac) its sucked. I install QT Alternative which made iTunes constantly use at least 50% cpu (AMD 3700+) and 60+ mb of ram (not a huge deal) for my 10,000 song collection which ran smooth as silk on the iTunes 4.7 release.
- fa_pa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0this is almost the same pack like the google pack with 3 different and 2 new programs and they still have trillian in it what i realy don't understand because there are hundreds of better open source clients.
Why do they allways include these showstoppers? - graywave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0dugg just for the additional links in the comments
- isosceles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Gaim should have made the list for those unfortunate mac-less windows users. Trillian is a resource hog.
- geeke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Here is Geeke's version of a pack :)rnrnrnFirefoxrnGAIMrnOpenOfficernAvastrnMS Anti SpywarernSpyblasterrnProgrammer’s NotepadrnDVDShrinkrnFoxit pdf readerrnPeer GuardianrnThunderbirdrnUtorrentrnYPOPSrnTugziprnBlender3DrnCDBurnerXP PrornrnCant think of anything else thats my list for now :)
- pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Who needs a software pack? Just goto the site you need the software from, and download it. Besides, I can't say I'd exactly trust a software pack to have completely unmodified software ... viruses/spyware?
On the subject of Zonealarm .... I suggest that no one should be using it. You ought to have a hardware firewall, and, if anything, you should just use the built-in Windows firewall to avoid conflicts with software. I saw that digg posting the other day about Zonealarm and spyware ... well guess what, you should expect something like that from a free product like Zonealarm. Be smart in your software choices .... - garitar, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Why the hell do *grocery lists* of software make the front page just because it's on some retarded trendy blog?
Anybody who dugg this needs to leave this site and never return. - SystemRocks, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0It's ok
- teebiss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Any "geek" would already be using these apps. Lame story.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2What a piece of ***** list:
_Google Desktop Search_
Nobody uses this. It's a peice of crap. Also, it has a 2gb database limit. Plus, it only indexes certain data (like Outlook, but not other email clients. At least not back when I tried it).
_Google Earth_
Um. Whatever. How is this a lifehacker thing? If I need info, I'll go to maps.google.com -- nothing else is really necessary.
_Trillian_
You've Got to be ***** kidding. A $25 piece of ***** application that does what GAIM and other Jabber clients will do for free? Are you people retarded?
_Zone Alarm_
That's not one of the better free software firewalls. A real "life hacker" would just use a hardware firewall so they don't have to install and maintain an instance of Zone Alarm on each and every machine they have.
_7-ZIP_
Great. Now try unzipping 7zip files on some other operating system.
_Ad-Aware / FireFox_
You say if it wasn't for Ad-Aware, you'd be chasing roaches on pop-up ad windows all day long. But then you say to use FireFox. If you use FireFox, you know that you don't need Ad-Aware to deal with pop-ups.
Funny thing is, there's no mention here of Bit-Torrent. That's a must-have for a "lifehacker". Same with PeerGuardian and ClamAV (or in the Windows environment, ClamWin). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0Yeah, lame list, old submission...can't believe it made it to the front page. Morons.
+Firefox
+Avast/ClamWin
+Thunderbird
+Gaim/amsn/Miranda
+Media Player Classic/VLC
+OOo
etc, etc, etc
Every list on here thus far is better than the crap list published here. +lame - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0@mtchandler
Um...just because he thinks something sucks doesn't mean he's obligated to make something better. - jadattack91, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0hahaha dude zone alarm is spyware google pack is god knows what and all the rest is crap. accually...... downloading packs is the stupidest thing. thats why u go around the internet anddownload the apps that u want. and make sure there not spyware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"you are a hater!! if you think the list is so bad then publish one yourself."
+ Firefox
+ Thunderbird
+ ClamWin
+ GAIM
+ Any favorite text editor (Scintilla, Notepad++, UltraEdit, Crimson, PSPad, etc).
That's about all you really need. -
