- doctechnical, on 07/06/2008, -2/+59I have this idea for a game where you try to bluff your way through a topic that you don't really know anything about, and go for points seeing how long it takes until your lack of expertises gets you shot down in flames as the luser you are.
- manlykitty, on 07/06/2008, -3/+33haha great suggestion to someone who knows nothing about making games
"Let’s say you have an idea about making a tic-tac game, or darts or pool, or even a game like Diablo, Quake 3, WoW, etc."
better to shatter those dreams in the first paragraph and say don't even think about making the next Quake 3 or WoW until maybe after you make pong - phylo, on 07/07/2008, -0/+23Always be sure to tighten up the graphics.
- inactive, on 07/06/2008, -1/+20I've used the games factory years ago and it is really easy. I'll have to check out the 3D apps.
- Adonia, on 07/06/2008, -3/+22If you're going to start creating games you might as well learn to code so they don't become generic or just really bad, quick. (Though they might anyway, that's not the point.)
- snackalacka, on 07/07/2008, -1/+19Yes, it does.
- ursername180, on 07/07/2008, -2/+19Oh boy, I'm totally going to make an FPS with highly detailed graphics, fluid dynamics and huge open-worlds. Then a huge company will hire me and pay me lots of money for my game and then I'll be famous in the gaming world!
- treyd, on 07/07/2008, -3/+19No offense, but this is a pretty weak article for digg standards. You would be better off learning a programming language such as C++.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -2/+18Java? Oh *****, get outta here.
- kronaslor, on 07/07/2008, -2/+18Brings back memories of my high school days. TGF and Click and play suck though.
2 good alternates..
Game Maker
(it's powerful and yet fairly easy has a few advanced tools like its own scripting language, particle engine, etc)
http://www.yoyogames.com/gamemaker
RPG Maker
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RPG_Maker - DaFunk, on 07/07/2008, -0/+15I'm still having trouble telling if this was an attempt at satire/humor or trying to be an informative article.
- inactive, on 07/06/2008, -0/+13Hah, that's charming. I can't wait to make cookie-cutter games like everyone else that will use this program. I can even make Diablo! AMAZING!
- MrDarkSim, on 07/06/2008, -1/+13Will it help me make my own Limbo of the Lost?
- kibiz0r, on 07/07/2008, -2/+14Real men write in assembly.
- ursername180, on 07/07/2008, -1/+12Haha. Luser.
- tidu, on 07/07/2008, -0/+10getting started with mods is a good idea. unreal and other games have great modding communities, it's good for a portfolio as well.
- Tyrghast, on 07/07/2008, -1/+10Real men write in binary.
- fuzzybeard, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7Then maybe you'll get laid, too!
- ursername180, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7Dude, don't get your hopes up. Psshtt.
- fuzzybeard, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8Real men WRITE assembly.
- Anonymous3, on 07/07/2008, -0/+7So basically http://i28.tinypic.com/9jnd3r.jpg
- Hypersapien, on 07/07/2008, -1/+8C# has a module called XNA designed specifically for making games.
You still need to learn the language. - arcooke, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Yeah, let's make games for a platform hardly anyone plays games on. Kidding aside.. Unity actually looks like an excellent engine. I wish they'd hurry up and put out a PC port.
- Evi1d33d, on 07/07/2008, -0/+6Real men use a magnetized needle.
- zzz@tkz, on 07/07/2008, -1/+6I started out programming on a little engine called the RPG Toolkit. I don't use it anymore, and haven't used it for a long while, but I'm still active on the forums (#1 poster with over 10,000 posts, even with a database crash awhile back). Great for beginners, and doesn't suck like the other engines.
http://toolkitzone.com - RoboB0b, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5The first headline of the article says "Creating a digital game from scratch."
Buried as inaccurate. - Borgcube636, on 07/07/2008, -0/+5Game Maker 7.0 is way better and easier to use than this program. It's odd why this is on digg and Game Maker isn't.
www.yoyogames.com - bagboyrebel, on 07/07/2008, -1/+5I think everyone is missing the most important question, where can I find that 3d pokemon game?
- vinceislegend, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Real programmers use butterflies.
- incd, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4Why not to use OpenGL or SDL? Those are cross-platform
- Zalyster, on 07/07/2008, -0/+4I prefer RMXP especially since it opened up to scripting with Ruby. Not as powerful as others, but it's got a warm place in my heart. :)
I heard the next one will be able to export games to Xbox 360! - neko6, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3I love Java, its my main programming language - but it ain't for games. Small web-based games are much simpler to create in Flash, and heavy games need the small efficiency advantage and direct connection to DirectX/OpenGL only possible in C++.
- neko6, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Real programmers write in Machine code (this is a must read for any programmer):
http://www.jargon.net/jargonfile/t/TheStoryofMel.h ... - rz8472, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3I played around a lot with Klik & Play when I was younger; it was the predecessor to the Games Factory.
- someguy92, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Real programmers use butterflies.
http://xkcd.com/378/ - KillerJ59J, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Real men can print and read through Whitespace like a book.
- 11Christine, on 07/07/2008, -4/+7It's called "for dummies", not "for amateurs". I guess not everyone on Digg have programming skills.
- ortucis, on 07/07/2008, -0/+3Oh and please for the love of god avoid purchasing ANYTHING from GameCreators without verifying whether the product is still being updated or long dead. Most products they actively display on front page are dead, like 2005 dead and they don't post it anywhere on the site (that this IS ***** DEAD! NO UPDATE EVER! YOU SUCK).
So yeah, might as well go for BlitzMax, at least you aren't limited to WIndows only. - Elranzer, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2The next version is already out (RPG Maker VX) and as far as I know, it doesn't have Xbox 360 exporting yet.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Lazy bastards.
- kd7tck, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2It no longer has a constant support system in place. There hasn't been a update in DB in over two years. Which leads to the problem of will those bugs ever get fixed from version 6. You would be better off with VB.
- tgilber, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3How about having fun making a game? You know, something quick and 2D... like 5 minutes worth of work... check out Mockingbird... http://playmockingbird.com/
- KingGorilla, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I can finally make a game called Space Nazis
- Stap1eGun, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2A tic-tac game?
- ortucis, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Only if you master the art of.. PRINTSCN!!!
In caps. - phrenzy, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Years ago, when the modding community was really starting to take off, I expected the games industry design departments to be overrun with Unreal / Quake modders. Didn't happen.
In the industry, many younger entry-level designers being recruited from the 'modding' community have a very difficult time adjusting to the requirements of working in a true work-a-day game development environment. Not only that, the 'modders' tend to be so focused on FPS gameplay they have zero ideas in the way of 3rd person console games.
The point is, 'mad modding skillz' do not qualify you to be a game designer. MAYBE a scripter, but if you want to learn about creating mass-market console games you'll need to focus on the nuts and bolts of gaming.
Things like difficulty progression, intuitive level design and accessible controls are the things that generally come with experience. - inactive, on 07/07/2008, -1/+3The best pygame stuff I have seen is like the beginner GameMaker creations. These programs take care of the classes and event handling and let you work on the game itself.
- inactive, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2I played with both of those a few years back.
Good times. - Cubedude04, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Nobody hass mentioned sauerbraten yet.
http://sauerbraten.org/ - waydee, on 07/07/2008, -0/+2Or you could just buy a book on C++ and OpenGL/D3D programming and do it properly.
