- KWhat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+55"With a little luck dragon, 2.0.0 final is just around the corner."
Its about time! Gaim 2.0 has been beta for over a year and its been a little longer than a year and a half since gaim has seen a "stable" release. For a few months around google's summer of code I almost thought the project was abandoned. Good to know that gaim 2.0 might beat Duke Nukem Forever's release date. - joolz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15about time, is there a changelog somewhere?
- frank3000, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17woot!
gaim is awesome and fast
for anyone that uses trillian or (ugh)aim, try out gaim - adidos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15Worst of all IM clients *has* to be AOL Triton...I cringe every time I see it on a friends computer.
gaim is great but I've had tons of trouble transferring files. I wonder if this update will fix that. - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I think it was just a co-incidence.. I dont see how gaim installation can irrepairably damage your vista so much that it wont boot.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@monergism:
What are you trying to say? That you have no clue? As bjweeks pointed out: Adium is based on Gaim -- an Aqua GUI on top Gaim's core. Without Gaim, no Adium. So every Adium user should be happy about improvements in Gaim, because they do also benefit Adium. - spyda45, on 10/12/2007, -6/+16Yes, Adium, but last time I checked, it was only available for OSX... Gaim atleast doesn't discriminate.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Arg, I totally agree. If I sit on a computer with Triton I have to immediately uninstall it, no matter whose computer it is.
- ers35, on 10/12/2007, -9/+17Wonderful!
I installed Gaim, and now Vista won't boot. Probably Vista's fault. - codyman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Nice.. I like how they shrank the status bar since beta5... i always thought that thing was huge...
- tweak50, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7That was the number one thing i hated about beta5.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh, it turns out this is caused by the gfire plugin. That's ok, I'd rather use xFire in most cases anyway.
- iPontus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6This seems to be where the changelog ought to be, but it is mystically absent:
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?group_id=235&release_id=479631 - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There has always been file transfer support, but it sometimes seems to not work for me. Sending always works, but receiving sometimes doesn't. However, I haven't had that happen in a while. I also saw something in the SVN logs about AIM file transfer pausing, which sounds interesting. Hopefully that means they've fixed up some of the bugs they had earlier. One bug in beta 5 was that on Windows it somehow didn't have permissions to the my documents folder, so I had to save all files on desktop and it would lose the file names when they were sent to me. I think that was fixed. Reading SVN commit logs is very informative and fun when releases are few and far between (relatively, compared to some other FOSS software) and news is almost only posted on the release of a new beta.
- stepnet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Maybe after this release they can start focusing on the rather mediocre interface. Gaim has to be right up there with the GIMP, as a ‘written for programmers, by programmers’ interface.
Even just some skinning would be nice, maybe that's “just around the corner”?
As a mac/linux/windows user, adium is still the nicest all round client. - mercurysquad, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Really... I saw this and my reaction was "beta SIX?!!"
I think it's about time they actually released Gaim2. Not that it has any really significant changes/improvements over 1.5 but still... I mean, no reliable file transfer, no voice support (and no intention to support it), forget about cam, not even a good status msg handling... if I had a little more time I would start helping with the code, then again, the gaim team perhaps has very different ideology than me, so my additions probably wouldn't even make it to the code base. Remember Gaim VV. - KyleGoetz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@iofthestorm: Actually, that's not the reason. One of the Google Summer of Code interns screwed up the codebase of gaim so that way when they got ready to merge gaim-vv, they couldn't anymore. At least, when I got on #gaim on Freenode after 2.0b1 came out and started asking around, that is what I was told by a mod.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you use the GTK Theme Switcher, you can at least change the "theme" of GTK applications, including gaim. Personally, I like the Clearlooks set of themes, but overall I like gaim's simple, yet refined look. Better than AIM 5.x anyway, and much better than 6.0's gaudy attempt at looking skinned. Get the theme switcher at http://members.lycos.co.uk/alexv6/ . For some reason it doesn't work on the GIMP though.
- codyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmm.. having a problem with away / available messages.. if I set a message, it doesn't seem to apply right... anyone else have this problem?
- jakethecake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I just edit C:/Documents and Settings/username/.gtkrc-2.0
and change
gtk-theme-name ="MS-Windows"
to
gtk-theme-name ="bluecurve" or gtk-theme-name ="gtkwimp" or gtk-theme-name ="lighthouseblue"
Which is the three themes that come with the GTK Win32 version. - colklink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@stepnet
gaim 1.0 was a little on the clunky side, but I personally find gaim 2.0's interface much better than AIM (especially the new piece of crap 6.0) or Trillian. Lots of great plugins too. I haven't found an instant messenger I like better. - alephsmith, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7On Windows I prefer Miranda hands down. It is the one program I miss since switching to Linux.
Gaim doesn't even approach it. - Kickersny, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Providence,
On both linux and win32, I've just drag-and-dropped files into the conversation window and never had it fail. This is with 2.0.0b5, though I can't remember the last release that gave me problems. Also, I'm sending to/from Trillian, AIM, and Adium (that I can remember). - Breeder18, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I tried triton for a week and it probably crashed at least 50 times, biggest piece of garbage I have ever seen!
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Anyone else getting an error when trying to add accounts? On wingaim, I get this error:
---------------------------
Accounts: gaim.exe - Application Error
---------------------------
The instruction at "0x77c478c0" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The memory could not be "read".
At least it doesn't crash at exit every time like beta 5 did for me, but it seems really odd that this would happen. I think I'll try disabling my plugins and/or deleting my profile, but it'd be nice to see if anyone else has this appear. I love gaim, and it's way better than AIM or google talk or trillian. - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh, this version can check gmail accounts for one thing, but you need to enable it from the accounts menu for jabber google talk accounts that have already been created. Pretty nice.
- doubleblack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Um, I'd rather wait for Astra...
- awhiteflame, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I hate Gaim 2.0. They've removed options in configurations, they've made unnecessary UI changes (including removing things), and they seem to have made it harder to do easy things. I'm sticking with 1.5 until there is AV support, then maybe I'll switch. Until then, I recommend Gaim 1.5
- ryan4477, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4gaim 1=yucky
gaim 2=ooo shiney - lobsang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately, no pre-compiled .DEBs are offered in the site... Got to dig some or compile my own.
- jtorque, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Awesome! It'd be nice if you could disable it entirely, though. GTK seems to show an irritating problem if you click that button while it's close to the bottom of your screen- shifting all the selections downward and leaving a huge empty space in the rest of the selection menu. I know it's only beta, but Gaim looks like it's headed the same direction as Gnome; reduced configuration settings with each release.
- kunalthakar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4anyone here uses kopete? It seems better than GAIM to me (atleast for MSN). For starters, it is integrated well in my KDE setup and the options/configurations interface is far more intuitive than GAIM. Also, the Kopete team seems to improve at a much faster pace than GAIM which has been stuck in this beta phase for a looooong time.
- getaclue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Triton is so bad, as are most of the newer versions of AIM. I love how I can go to the AOL Canada site and download 5.5 where the only difference is color is spelt colour in the Canadian version.
Oh and the ad on the buddy list doesn't play videos or annoying sounds either. - renegadeafk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If it ever comes...
- strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's an option to do this. Go to Buddies --> Show Buddy Info. Might be different in win32.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think they were going to merge gaim-vv (that's v v, a fork of gaim 1.x that had video and voice) into 2.0 but since 2.0 has been delayed so much they decided to leave it off until after 2.0 is stable. I guess that's a good idea, but it was one of the reasons I first moved on to 2.0 beta when it came out. As you can see by my numerous posts in this item, I follow gaim almost obsessively...
- jakethecake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and a third thing, GIMP use a gtkrc in "C:/Documents and Settings/username/.gimp-2.2/gtkrc"
at line 13 you will find this line. -> # You can add your own GIMP-specific GTK styles here.
Just add the text from theme file from "Common Files" and your in business. - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's called show buddy details in gaim. My blist isn't that long that I need that, but it's there if you're interested. A lot of options in 2.0 were just moved around, not taken away.
- iofthestorm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Oh, I didn't know that. I thought I saw sometime in a later beta (3?) on the forum that they removed it due to wanting to finish 2.0 earlier. Could be a bit of both, since there was already a working fork with vv I guess something was messed up to make it not an easy transplant.
- Jozer99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@elnerdo
You probably don't get invited to use many peoples computers anymore, huh? - jer2eydevil88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm excited they got rid of the few bugs they had... I hadn't noticed any at least...
Yet for anyone who requires the official aim client (yeah some people hate change and gaim is different) I still suggest the aim ad hack http://aftermath.dyndns.org:8888/~aimadhack/
Gaim has come a long way since I started using it at beta .69 but I dislike how they removed the ability to run multiple instances of the executable in Windows with version 1.2... - nubtard, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4IM networks need to kill themselves and start over with a STANDARD. And don't tell me jabber because jabber still sucks.
- Venator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Is it just me or is it impossible to set yourself as Away on this new version.
- jakethecake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2oh and another thing, it seams that GAIM or GTK hard link the theme path to "C:/Program/Common Files/GTK/2.0/share/themes/"
so if you download extra themes via alexv6 ( http://members.lycos.co.uk/alexv6/pub/gtk/gtk2-themes-2006-10-07-ash.exe )
then you need to move the themes from your "localized" folder to the "English" common files folder.
The installer moved the themes to "C:/Program/Delade filer/GTK/2.0/share/themes" on my computer, which won't work.
"Delade filer" is "Common files" in Swedish :) - linuxeventually, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2send "username password" to 265-000 on your cell. and you could also leave your computer signed on. there are better methods but for older phones, it is the way to go.
- EverySam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can't either.
So now I have to choose between GIANT status messages that work, or sexy status messages that don't work.
FLOSS FTW. - zoid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1What ever happened with the IAX2 functionality that was being worked on?
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I know, but there is an RMP file so maybe we can use alien to install it.
