- kazimir34, on 10/12/2007, -4/+205Cool, too bad everybody already has one.
- Bean945, on 10/12/2007, -2/+67There were probably 6 billion + invites already out there.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+38Elitists. Go run your own mail servers if you want your own special thing.
- Depraved, on 10/12/2007, -12/+46Boooo! I happened to have liked gmail's system of invitations.
- Zuggy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35I still remember when I got my gmail invite, when you only got 10 invites every few months and I was on 5 different gmail invite lists for like 6 months, checking daily to see if I could get an invite. Ah, those were the days
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26I bought my GMail invite with meat in Kingdom of Loathing.
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25@kalleanka
Hey asshat! RTFA! First sentence "Gmail is now a public beta. " - eolite, on 10/12/2007, -7/+30I don't see the sign-up link either (in India)
- DogGunn, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31Well that source is from Google, however I cannot see the sign up link on the GMail website.
P.S. I am browsing from Australia. - snurfle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Is that in reference to Gmail, or just a generalization?? ;-)
- Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21Weird... I still have 100 invitations. Anyone interested? :-p
- kukumaka, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17You try to sign up, it asks for your mobile number.
You click the question: "Can I sign up without the invitation code? Or without a mobile phone?"
And it says: "Anyone in the world is now welcome to create a Gmail account at http://mail.google.com/mail/signup. Enjoy!"
You go to the link they provide, and it asks for your mobile number to sign up.
It's a never-ending loop! - crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Well, then they need to actually activate it because I follow the links to sign up and am prompted to use my cell phone to get an invitation code.
That page may be Google's, and it may indeed say everyone can sign up, but it doesn't make it true until everyone can actually sign up.
WTF? - rkoopmann, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14FTA: Also Gmail's mail fetcher [http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/12/screenshots-of-gmails-mail-fetcher.html] seems to be available for everyone.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Canada here - no signup link. I already have an account but just FYI - no link for me. Even used the google answer link for the signup and just brings me to a login page.
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@logicbomb
they did that on purpose as an innovative spam catching technique. You can make variations on your e-mail when signing up at different websites and then create filters to spam based on the To: field (ie to logic.bomb [at] gmail.com) if you start getting spammed. I'm sorry your name isn't original? - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10kazimir: "Cool, too bad everybody already has one."
More like too bad everyone already has 3 of them, but yeah it is a bit late for them to try and make this exciting. - Ozzy73, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10diggmenot2007, I digged you not ;) First of all, Caps lock... learn to use it. Second, dont spam just because your stupid and pointless post got dugg down. Blocked XD
- speaker219, on 10/12/2007, -5/+13It says "EVERYWHERE" don't know if it's true or not, but its an official google document:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=22245 - Kratos76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Yahoo! advertises in every single email you send! Huge flash and other graphic advertisements throughout their pages and your email navigation. Go back to 1995.
- LoganKriete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Am I just stupid or did I step back in time? I thought you could sign up with your cell phone for a while now, or has that been only in the US? Regardless, I'm glad it's available for others as well!
And I don't see the mail fetcher yet--maybe it's not out for all accounts? - hybridcreation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Wow...maybe you should not take things (especially Digg) so seriously.
- Amything, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Finally! Now thats news. Been waiting forever.
- NicP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I also signed up a year ago using the phone number method and have not been contacted. It's just an elaborate way to make sure spammers don't go creating lots of accounts.
- rkoopmann, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6...grumble, grumble
http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2006/12/screenshots-of-gmails-mail-fetcher.html - 52tease, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7No it's not:
https://www.google.com/a/ - dpcdomino, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12Still reads beta so proceed at your own risk :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6sent you a invite :-)
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8No, people aren't signing up for it because Yahoo is *****.
- Skurt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I signed up years ago... my phone number has since reverted back to my past employer. Hope they get google-spamed!
- bioskope, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Not just US, but only a select list of countries
Oz,Indonesia,Malaysia,NewZealand,Philippines,Singapore,Thailand and Turkey as well
Somebody kill the guy who suggested the incremental model of development to google - varvil, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I've been seeing this option in the US for more than a couple of months now. Am I the only one?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you can still feel special if you can manage to get google to host mail for your own domain... It's pretty sweet, you get up to 50 addresses and it uses the gmail interface. I've had it for about a year now, it's still invite only imho..
- Mufflegrump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey, it's not Solid's fault that you are *horribly* unfunny. And from what I've heard...ugly.
- Nougat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@knomeval:
Firefox + CustomizeGoogle extension will take care of those ads for you. I also very much like the GMailSkins extension. - freetyme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4ha,I "gave" my dad a gmail account for his birthday, he felt like he was the coolest guy at work with his fancy 2.5 gig webmail account. He didn't know I've had gmail for a long time before I decided to "give" it to him.
I wonder if he'll get wind that he's no longer special.
Oh well he still loves his gmail anyway. - ocellnuri, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This was the biggest news for me too. I was getting frustrated that new accounts had the feature, but my account didn't. Now Gmail can really be my e-mail center for all of my accounts.
- knomevol, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5yes, invitations don't require the cellphone number bit. (unless it's changed).
something about having ads... next to my email... that are related to not only the content of the email being looked at, but all other saved in my inbox, and worse yet even related apparently to emails i've deleted.
rather unnerving. - solidhubris, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It's Google's own way of saying "no." Remember, they're a smart company with a bunch of geniuses working for them, so why not tell the masses of idiots no like that?
Reminds me of the card that says "If you want to keep an idiot busy for hours, flip card over," on both sides. - MrUnderbridge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Appears to be only for the US, don't understand the whole enter your cell # and they will text you an invitation code, what will Google be doing with all those phone numbers?"
Might just be a way of doing a fairly un-bot-able Turing test. Probably will work better than capchas. - friol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yep, it's called "public beta" 8D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4remember when having GMail made you special. That ended like 1 year ago =P Really, who dosn't have at least 1 gmail account by now...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3FYI, the information in that link has been changed back to "You need to receive and enter a special invitation code in order to create an account."
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I've had my account(s) for a while - but wanted to see what the public was going to be subject to...
I know Google is big brother but this is just a little over the top...
"To sign up, enter your mobile phone number below. We'll send you a text message with an invitation code to create your account"
so you're going to track my email, searches, web use, and on top of all that store my phone number - GREAT! - 3rendan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3so much for Canada hey?
Australia,Indonesia,Malaysia,NewZealand,Philippines,Singapore,Thailand and Turkey And Of Course United States
Canada?
pfft who lives in Canada, its to cold up there. we all live in igloos, and sleep with our bears.
we don't even know what computers are.
Public my a** - aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8I for one welcome our legitimate Linux blending Soviet overlords.
- SilverhammerMBA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's actually pretty easy to set up gmail to do this. Just check the "Archive" box when you set up the filter, then when it applies the label it will also make the message skip your inbox. Then just click on the label in the sidebar and voila! There are all of your messages with that label.
It's great, I have all three of my email accounts forwarding to my gmail. And as soon as I log in I can instantly see how many new messages I have in each just by looking at the label on the side. - smojo12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I found that funny to...I've had gmail for about 2 years but I figured I would try out the sign up process and to see the need for a mobile phone number is an odd way to verify. I have never seen that type of sign up before.
I guess they came up with this idea to maybe combat spammers making accounts with them. - sebnukem, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It is NOT 2Gb it's 2GB. Huge difference between bits and bytes. Pay attention people.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Gmail gradually opened in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Egypt and now everywhere."
Apparently Canada isn't anywhere. -
