- smartssa, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22Very nice collection. I've started using GIMP more and more since work won't pay for Photoshop (thankfully, since it's too damn expensive anyways). I've gotten kind of fond of it and this will only help more.
Cheers. - Sun.Surfin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17True, this has some great tutorials, but I've always found gimptalk.com to have loads more. They've got page upon page in their forums, and new user submitted ones are published almost daily.
http://gimptalk.com - gahal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I'm in a pretty similar boat. I also end up working from different locations and computers throughout the day, so I can always have gimp around no matter what the situation. Kind of hard to say "Yeah I'm gonna need about 20 licenses for photoshop in case I need to install it on some random computer to use for about 5 minutes".
Problem I am running into currently is a few companies are demanding graphics and photos in CMYK, and Gimp does not do CMYK. Will be trying out some 3rd party plugins for CMYK support next week, hoping they work up to a production quality level. - strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13"Photoshop is not worth the extra cost, what features the GIMP lacks are not paramount."
For many designers, lack of CMYK support is a deal-breaker. - tmcc, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20Fact: Poor designers can't get used to the GIMP's interface.
Photoshop is not worth the extra cost, what features the GIMP lacks are not paramount.
Stupid people have a tough time with change, so going from Photoshop to *Program X* is going to be difficult no matter what.
What they don't realize, is that professional artists can use any program and get good results because the art doesn't come from a program... it comes from your brain and heart. - DonPMitchell, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14No, but GIMP is free and Photoshop is quite expensive. A cheaper alternative to Photoshop is the Photoshop Elements programs, which have a lot of the important features of the main product.
- Shinta, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Gimp tutorials are always good =).
- TheCheeks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10yeah gimp is nice if you dont wanna go the illegal downloading way.
- jcaino, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I'm not related in any way to the development of, but I would love to plug GIMPshop http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=241 which is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux...
I am a big fan of GIMP. but the GIMPshop hack is a great way if you're transitioning from PhotoShop... - jaiwithani, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Or you want to go the free OS way.
- Slapo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@texpundit:
well, the UI is exactly what I really like about the GIMP. The idea is pretty simple (use right click instead of a docked toolbar) and with GIMP 2.2 and 2.3, you can have all the windows and dock in one window and the image in the other one.
I've bought Pixel, but for now, it's still not usably stable and there are still some parts of it which don't work as expected (most of the bugs are in the bug genie and Pixel forums).
Where I live, there's CorelDraw 11 available for the price near that of Paint Shop Pro and I find it a lot better as well. Guess which one I have... CorelDraw :)
I just can't make it work under wine T_T - animewars, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Pretty good site. Another place GIMP users may want to consider: http://www.gimptalk.com/
Very useful as well. - wallclimber, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I'm glad to see some GIMP tutorials on Digg. It's generally Photoshop tuts that make it to the front page. Those are nice, but GIMP deserves some recognition too. It has come a LONG way since I first tried it.
One thing I did find is that GIMP worked a lot nicer on my Ubuntu than it did on Windows. Not sure why, but it seemed so to me.
I've also come to really love Scribus and InkScape. Wonderful programs...and the more we use them (and contribute a few dollars to keep them going) the better they will get. I am in awe of the dedicated people who make these programs available. :o) - bieber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7...or if you use GNU/Linux...
- eosp, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7To be honest, neither is Photoshop. But they're not targeted to the beginner market.
- ThirdPrize, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Misleading title. It says Gimp tutorial but there are no references to ball gags, handcuffs, whips, chains and those fetching black leather masks.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I've stumbled across this site a while ago. Has some nice tutorials, but new tutorials are hardly ever added, if at all. I don't think there's been a new tutorial on that site for over a year.
- fillup07, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want to see a "How to transition from Photoshop to GIMP" set of video or picture tutorials on the basics.
Tutorials that talk about how to create certain patterns and designs are nice, but what would be great is if they made is super easy to switch from Photoshop. Call me a slow learner, but it would make me more likely to switch to a different interface. - spinchange, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4dugg & del.icio.us tagged. GIMP is not very"beginner friendly" - helpful tutorial.
- stanleyfresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, you can follow a LOT of Photoshop tutorials with the GIMP, though not without a bit of effort as you have to find the equivalent tool/function that does what you see in the Photoshop tutorial, so... if you look at it that way, there are FAR more tutorials available for the GIMP than you think.
Either way, though, it's always good to see tutorials for good ol' GIMP. +Digg for GIMP exposure, cuz some of us can't afford to dish out a Benjamin, let alone six of em. ;) - briguyd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you have the newer versions of the GIMP, make sure to click the link that is for GIMP 2.0+ at the top of that page, many of the tutorials have been changed along with the GIMP, as some features and menu's are not exactly the same anymore.
- Flamekebab, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Judging by Microsoft's previous tactics, "decent" is not a word I could see as applicable to them, unless in conjunction with works such as "not in the slightest" or "on a cold day in hell".
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Gimp + Inkscape
All I need. - Derrekito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Considering Gimp is free you can't beat it, plus it has come a LONG way. Keep those tutorials coming!
- clintzoto, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5This rocks. I'm brand new to GIMP since I've gone "windowless".
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@tmcc:
Just because someone doesn't like the interface doen't mean their stupid, or that they do worse work with it.
They just might not be comfortable with it.
People have also been mentioning the presence of and the lacking of certain features... Obviously the different programs will do certain things better or easier or faster.
I find myself using Paintshop Pro X. I really want to use Photoshop, but it just irks me when I use it that the scroll wheel + zoom doesnt operate the way I want it to. (like i'm used to in Paintshop Pro). This quirk is my only barrier from using Photoshop. (it got better when i discovered hotkeys + scroll)
I don't use Gimp because there is no parent window, and the floating menus seem to get lost behind each other. I know there is a hack available to have a parent window, but Id also like to have the menus dock, preventing me from loosing things behind them. Again it just irks me.
For other people the story is different, as is the outcome. I have litterally sat down with the 3 programs and tried to do similar image manipulations, layers, effects, etc. (Gimp didnt have layer effects when I tried and may still not).
So its all about personal experience. What ever works for you. - cwncool, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1GimpShop FTW!
- afruff23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/separate.shtml
Partial support for CMYK - ericember, on 09/22/2008, -0/+1do they really have to call it gimp? other than that good tutorial and awesome program
http://stores.ebay.com/Mission-Renaissance-Art-Sup ... - gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5GIMP has an interface?
- hankroth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Gimp is fabulous. Not just because it is open source but because it is so much better than anything else. It has my vote.
Hank - A5204, on 08/13/2009, -2/+2I've been using GIMP for a few years now. Opening it up initially was a bit overwhelming but after a few days of experimenting and finding some tutorials (On sites such as GimpTalk as others have mentioned) it really wasn't that hard to start doing some more advanced projects.
I have Photoshop and I have to say I would choose GIMP over it anyday. - johndanzig, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0heard that over 50% of photoshop users are using it illegally. I fainted when i looked at buying the CS3 suite.
I started to use gimp to draw stuff when my computers hard drive crashed and couldnt install PS. GIMP is pretty neat for art. http://www.thegluckmethod.com - Irimi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2TAKE THAT PHOTOSHOP.
- thebellmaster1x, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1LAME. Apple iMac text and the polka dots are taken almost directly from Phong--he even used the same picture when doing the polka dots!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3"You actually think a smart person would willingly move from an intuitive, user-friendly program to an unintuitive, script elitist program?"
That right there is the IQ test. If you have a mind that is capable of believing that this statement makes good sense, then you are definitely, unquestionably, beyond a reasonable doubt, incontrovertably TOO STUPID TO USE A COMPUTER. Please go watch TV or use your cell phone. Computers will always evade you. - wrinkles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Until someone sends you an adobe illustrator document and you can't open it. I hate closed documents! :(
- crossers, on 07/23/2008, -0/+0old information, but till useful.

http://www.chasr.org/ - usergentoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2You can always use Photosop plugins in Gimp as well.
- Shinta, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3If that link were submited to Digg I'd Digg it.
- stray, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Welcome to any photoshop tips site, circa 1997.
- V1ncent, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Photoshop Elements is a good pay alternative, usually you can get it for $30-40 after rebates.
- gregcotten, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4@tmcc
You actually think a smart person would willingly move from an intuitive, user-friendly program to an unintuitive, script elitist program? It's stupid to move from a good program to a "less-good" program. That's why people don't go permanently from Photoshop to GIMP. - ePlus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0Dugg because its GIMP! :D
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4...And I'm doing web development right now! How convenient of this to thoughtfully show up on the main page.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+8GIMP !> Photoshop
The biggest problem with GIMP is that the GUI is complete ass. Not user friendly at ALL. Does not use industry standard terminology. ScriptFu may be powerful but graphic designers are NOT programmers, by and large. And it's layering ability is so sub-par as to be laughable.
If you want a real, easy-to-use alternative to Photoshop for linux, try PIXEL -- http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/?page_id=12
Of course a good chunk of the open-source fanatics around here will complain that it's not an open source product and that you actually have to *GASP* pay MONEY for it... but those people are too cheap to pay for damned near *anything*. $32 for an easy-to-use and powerful product, even if it is closed source, is worth it, IMNSHO.
Also, you could always get Corel (used to be JASC) Paint Shop Pro, which is very much on a par with Photoshop, and run it under WINE. - Ireland, on 10/12/2007, -15/+5Thank feck for this! I downloaded Gimp the other day and I was like....eh huh?
- i440, on 10/12/2007, -18/+1Or if you actually run a decent OS but don't want to spend the money on photoshop. (:
- n_md, on 10/12/2007, -22/+5GIMP > Photoshop?

What is Digg?
