- thebiscuit, on 01/03/2008, -0/+39If you're gonna illegally download music, may as well get it in decent quality from better places.

lets try and break away from mp3's...and move toward open source audio (flac/ogg) - bdbr, on 01/03/2008, -0/+14Ogg is nice conceptually (because its "open"), but anyone who deals with technology knows the best tech doesn't win. MP3 won a long time ago.
- Makaveli604, on 01/03/2008, -2/+15I still prefer not having my song be something completely different then it was labelled as and at a unlistenable quality.
- cuttensteele, on 01/03/2008, -0/+12I would say that Songza (http://songza.com) is much better. RIAA can't nab you because the stuff isn't being downloaded to your computer, and it almost always buffers fast enough so you don't have to worry about pausing. Oh yeah, doesn't take up space on your HD either...
- hadak, on 01/03/2008, -1/+12FLAC is nice. The problem I have with these formats is that they're not widely supported on home AV equipment and portable devices. Now, this isn't an issue since I use MythTV, but it IS an issue because I use an iPod. Why have multiple copies of the same songs, in different formats?
- john2kx, on 01/03/2008, -5/+14FLAC is way too big, but ogg is a perfect alternative.. I agree, we should move towards ogg.
- ComeOutSwingin, on 01/03/2008, -0/+6How many music downloaders have you tested?
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+5limewire is for retards.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4thanks for that link! wow.
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4I take the opposite stance, mp3 decoding will be patent free in 2011, thats only 3 years away (2015 for the encoding). I doubt very much that ogg will have much market share gain over mp3 in that time or enough to make a diffrence, either in the hardware players that support OGG or the amount of content that is avilable in OGG. OGG does serve an important purpose, that is to teach people that codecs are patented, also it can be used in areas such as the games industry.
FLAC might be larger but in the age of terabyte harddrives and highspeed internet connections its not such an issue. With FLAC it doesn't matter what codec you end up using because you can just convert directly from FLAC without loosing any more quality than you would if you encoded in that codec in the first place. - msgyrd, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4That would be ridiculously easy to detect.
- KielKilla, on 01/03/2008, -0/+4This is the coolest thing I've ever seen.
- lukas88, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3Anyone know which of the compatible sites has the best quality sound?
- bede, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3So.... I guess I should hold off on releasing the iZilla then?
- arcooke, on 01/03/2008, -0/+3I just tested Last.fm (which worked well, just wish it had a naming feature instead of downloading 32849237489.mp3).. and it was a 128kbps 44KHz mp3 . That's not bad, but still fairly lossy.
- sark666, on 01/03/2008, -1/+4And sometimes, the nice thing about a patent is they do expire. AFAIK, fraunhofer's mp3 patents expire in 2010 or 2011 at the latest.
At that time it might as well be an open source codec. Zero cost to anyone who wants to build mp3 support in anything from an mp3 player to a linux distro. Sure it might not be the best, but there are so many types of different dedicated chips/hardware out there that plays mp3, it has basically been the defacto standard for quite some time now.
And on the bright side, mp3 has no drm to speak of. Believe me, the studios would love the mp3 format to die. - lexbaby, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2I don't know if it's useless, but yeah, the "song" needs to be on youtube. Hence the quality leaves a lot to be desired.
Other sites that do similar: http://skreemr.com/ and http://www.franceradio.net/ - imbob, on 01/03/2008, -0/+2i love last.fm free downloads, ohhh wait i mean its free music streaming music
- allaboutdatiki, on 01/03/2008, -4/+6Plot twist: the software was commissioned by the RIAA and includes hooks to phone home. Would you put it past them?
- t86y, on 01/03/2008, -1/+3or products/software/anything on this planet starting with "i" = iDrive, iPlay, iJerk, iMusic etc.
- JaredXM, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Mac only though sorry.
- JaredXM, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1What about using Soundflower and some sort of audio recorder? Soundflower basically re-routes audio to however you want. http://www.cycling74.com/products/soundflower
- skyteria, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Too late: http://cgi3.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage ...
- LastSight, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1apparently you can also download videos?
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1you can try a meizu m6, it supports flac.
- stutimandal, on 01/03/2008, -5/+6I don't know about others, but I had it enough with software names ending in Zilla.
- Jerky1312, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Does this thing work for streaming radio that host playlists (.pls files)? I downloading a program that supposedly works with .pls called Quintessential Player, but that didn't work. Supposedly the new Real Player 11 beta is going to allow it, but I'm not eager to install that into my system.
Anyone know a good .pls stream ripper? - ajchavar, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2this software is windows only, but there is a mac version. . . kinda
its called wiretap, and it records any audio coming out of any program you choose, and only that program, i've never used it for this purpose, but i don't see why it wouldnt work.
its not freeware, and i won it off of macheist so i don't know how much it costs, but it works quite well. - aberrati0n, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Or were before transcoding them...
- john2kx, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1How many flac's can you store on a portable media player? Probably less than the number of mp3's or ogg's you can store.
- Mike89, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Streamripper for Winamp. It's not good, but it does the job (sometimes). They're hard to rip accurately.
- Jalh, on 01/03/2008, -1/+2nothing better than download a 360kbs bit song ..... i use emule and im going pretty good with it .
- lexbaby, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1FYI: This (freemusiczilla) works with songs on the PodSafe Music Network.
http://music.podshow.com/ - Jerky1312, on 01/04/2008, -0/+1Yea, I have tried that before, but was not satisfied with it. If the tracks were short or started quickly after the last track, it would not recognize it as a new track and would put two tracks as a single track. It also had a bad habit of cutting the track short by about 10 - 15 seconds, which would require editing each and every track, annoying and a big time waster.
I appreciate the suggestion though. As you said, .pls are indeed hard to rip. I've been looking for a solid ripper for a few years now, but nothing does the job correctly. - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Actually not necessarily, there are quite a few ways of getting stealth transmissions though, most people only look for standard TCP/UDP.
Are you going to be able to detect a transmission done using DNS protocols, or ICMP? What about hiding the transmission inside legitimate looking file stream by adding a little bit extra here and there encrypted, perhapses hidden in an already encrypted stream. What about if instead to transmitting continuously or at launch it waits for a few days then send it all at once, unless the people looking are going to be using the program for a very long time with the packet sniffers there not going to be able to pick it up.
Plus the overall design could be deliberately flawed, such as logging the searches. - bede, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1heh, wouldn't ya know it
- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -0/+1Get software that automatically converts from FLAC to a ipod compatible format, most ipod software should do this already. Ideally having a player that supports open standards is better but not everyone can afford to go out and buy another player in the name of freedom.
- phragmatic, on 01/03/2008, -2/+2buried; use soulseek, problem solved.
- ChromaVita, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1just run your mic jack to your headphone jack. Wouldn't that work? Turn the sound on your computer down though.
- Dohko_Xar, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Can this thing download songs from the sixty one?
- kyouteki, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Correction - no STANDARDIZED DRM. Anyone can add any kind of DRM to an MP3 stream, but then no players would be able to play the file.
- Cerebral, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Highspeed internet connections... I just LOL'd!
- Goosy, on 03/12/2008, -0/+0You should try Videoraptor cause it has a lot of functions such as: besides downloading your favorite musics and videos from internet, it can also convert files in almost any format, it can burn CDs, creates ring tones for mobiles, organizes MP3......You can check here if you are interested: http://audials.com/en/audials_one/download_music/i ...
- sumGIRL, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1And all these comments do is convert your cancerous hate into digital poo.

- inactive, on 01/03/2008, -1/+1Decoding patents for mp3 expire in 2011 but encoding patents are in effect until 2015.
Anyone can add DRM to an open standard as well. If they wanted to add the DRM to mp3 they would probably do it despite the fact that no players would play it, they would just make it only work with compatible players like itunes and ipod and zune with its windows drm. - ajchavar, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/wiretap/
$30
i just tested it and it worked really well, last.fm sounded crisp as an AIFF file - inactive, on 01/03/2008, -3/+2soulseek is for tards
