- abadonn, on 04/11/2009, -0/+62Buy it back and then sell it to Google for a huge profit.
- the8thbit, on 04/11/2009, -3/+51They shouldn't have sold it in the first place.
- blake182, on 04/11/2009, -1/+29DiggBar + NYTimes registerwall = best day ever. Maybe a little blink tag and a popup or two.
- EdwardCendejas, on 04/11/2009, -1/+25Skype's getting too much exposure to the average person to be sold back easily, in my opinion.
- Maynza, on 04/11/2009, -4/+28Hahaha good luck with that. Ebay is going down the *****, you think they would get rid of their only asset?
- BrendanSheehan, on 04/11/2009, -1/+25Yeah, they only got $2.6B after all.
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -2/+24This would cost a lot of money, but I would love to see it happen.
Ebay/Paypal isn't exactly the most ethical of companies around these days, and Skype is too cool of a service to let them trash. - chockster, on 04/11/2009, -1/+18Yes, I've heard Joe Six Pack cares deeply about vendor lock-in. He and Joe the Plumber frequently discuss it over a beer.
And then they call over to the bar and say "A beer for Joe, please!". Then everyone says "Which one?!" and everyone laughs. It's like Cheers, but with more anti-abortion discussion. - Dumbledorito, on 04/11/2009, -0/+14"Reserve not yet met."
- esquire360, on 04/11/2009, -3/+14each phone call is only 2-5ยข a minute but when u hang up the charge you 9.57 in Final Value Fees!
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -0/+11I can never get through to my mom, someone always calls her right before I dial!
- LordRedSnake, on 04/12/2009, -0/+10They sold it, made buku cash, and now might buy it back for less than they sold it for with 8 times the users. Sounds like a pretty smart move to me.
- xOKxWhy, on 04/11/2009, -0/+10Pfft, why not go for Zeke's plunger?
- aspec, on 04/11/2009, -1/+10You bastard. I wanted that signed tennis racket from the set of "Salute Your Shorts."
- mishaneah, on 04/12/2009, -0/+7it's me
- inactive, on 04/11/2009, -1/+8Ebay won't give up skype am afraid. The skype creators Joost adventure failed miserably..
- Amnesia10, on 04/11/2009, -0/+7With fewer auctions and more stuff now being Buy it Now, it detracts from the benefits of eBay. With a recession people will be seeking bargains. Now ebay does not appear such a great deal. Then add in the problems with refunds from Paypal and you have a perfect storm for eBay.
- punchinelli, on 04/11/2009, -1/+7Do it. I am getting sick and tired of eBay and PayPal with their stupid double charging and fees. Craigslist FTW.
- FairDinkumMate, on 04/12/2009, -0/+6How about we use what works for us & if we're happy with the prices, service & functionality then you STFU & mind your own business.
- gremlinchief, on 04/11/2009, -2/+8I assume you've never heard of Google Voice...the previously known "GrandCentral"
- MasterGrief, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5The trouble is that if they did that and wanted to be completely separate from eBay's Skype network, they'd have to get everyone to download a new client and use a new network. Because people may not switch over immediately, if at all, new users would have a smaller selection of people they'd be able to contact.
In the end, the convenience of staying with the first program would kill the second one. - AmusedToDeath, on 04/12/2009, -0/+5Also, they probably had to sign a non-compete agreement when they sold Skype, which means that they legally aren't allowed to become a competitor.
- dsimonpower, on 04/11/2009, -1/+6You say this, and i believe your heart is in the right place. I dont believe for a second, however, that you would turn down $2.6 billion. It's sad, but welcome to capitalism.
- Ymeg, on 04/11/2009, -0/+5How is it sad?
Being able to create a revolutionary service and making 2.6 billion off it? Sounds like a pretty happy story to me. - BrendanSheehan, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4Buy it back just as Skype mobile takes off, very sneaky.
- avaugha4, on 04/11/2009, -0/+4What about Marquee tag?! hehe.
- AlanFang, on 04/11/2009, -1/+4Google was in talks to buy Skype, but it didn't work out. Shortly after they launched Google Voice.
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3Joost isn't a standalone app anymore and hasn't been for like a year. It's just like Hulu.
Considering you don't even know how it works I don't trust you as an authority when you say that it has no viewers. Also, I just checked the site and it seems like they have a lot of content. - UncleCrapper, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3Why should the solids trust the Founders? It's just another plot to conquer the Alpha Quadrant.
- inactive, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3How did Joost fail miserably? It's still going strong.
- the8thbit, on 04/12/2009, -0/+3You're right, I wouldn't turn down $2.8B, mostly because I wouldn't know how much my product would be worth in a couple years.
I'm just saying though, you know. - IamNomad, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2a clever ds9 reference! i wish i cold digg you again.
- chockster, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2I pay a decent price, get a decent service. Not my fault if SIP providers are not competitive.
- avaugha4, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2Very rarely are non compete agreements indefinite though.
- ethana2, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2You mean like a Google talk client for unix?
- tech42er, on 04/12/2009, -0/+2s/"launched Google Voice"/"bought GrandCentral"
- pellagaro, on 05/08/2009, -0/+1what a great story. maybe they can sell the company yet again in a few years..
- Geothermal, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Crazy like little arctic foxes?
- gbhall, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1So they are going to buy it back from eBay for about half the price they sold it to them at...
- Ultramagnus0001, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1Duuuuhhhh, maybe they should have invested in Google too.
- Asearvern, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1These are the days of buying and selling for sure. It may make good sense for eBay to sell if the acquisition in the first place got them what they wanted.
- Geothermal, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Avatar, Bill, avatar - can't find it if it ain't spelt right...
- bbunney, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Should be interesting. We'll see if Ebay lets it go or not. I will certainly watch what Ebay does both with regards to a sale and their prices. I won't pay for all of what they offer. I pick and choose what I use.
- ted_hosmann, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1As long as EBay requires the buyers to use Paypal - Ebay will make up the loss in Paypal transaction fees.
- Kaphoen, on 05/02/2009, -0/+1"Skype has more than 405 million registered users"... that's one hell of an email marketing list. I'm sure they could sell that to some gullible network marketer.
- MeccaYdna, on 04/12/2009, -0/+1What color is a giraffe's tongue?
- aspec, on 04/13/2009, -0/+1I'm claiming the money because they made me blue.
- pamuckraker, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1Skype is the type of product that doesn't jive with either Apple or AT&T's business plans of monopolization. Neither will talk about the alleged federal violations regarding Skype on AT&T's wireless network. For more information on this issue, here is an article to read: http://www.yourlawyer.com/topics/overview/Iphone-S ...
- phillipskinner, on 05/01/2009, -0/+1Life mst be a game of monopoly for these two gentlemen because these figures just seem like monopoly paper joke money when your talking in these large sums ... "The two men sold Skype to eBay in 2005 for $2.6 billion, and later received bonus payouts that increased the final price to $3.1 billion. Since then, Mr. Zennstrom, a native of Sweden, and Mr. Friis, of Denmark, have created the venture capital firm Atomico and backed the online video service Joost, both based in London" ...
all the best to you and your last cent
