- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41Would it absolutely KILL these guys to just put together an installer that includes all this crap and does it for you?
I mean, on the Foobar forums some people submit their configs as installers and those make it SOOOO much easier than hunting down these components that are hosted on some guy's website (that is always down).
I've used Foobar for over a year and have built my own configuration but if this program is going to grow in popularity we have to start creating all-inclusive installers that make it easy for non-techies to use. - edzieba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Starting to?
- CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23"starting to get?"
When you hit 10k+ songs, every solution but foobar is all but unusable. With over 50k, foobar runs with a tiny fraction of the RAM the other players use, including Winamp 2.x.
Not to mention it's the most versatile and all around best music player around, if you have the time to get to know it. - jerkst0re, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19How the hell can an interface be 'contrite'? I don't think that word means what you think it does.
- rjgrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17it's not columnsui, it's panelsui, which is different, MUCH different
- AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15Panels UI is love :-)

http://www.alanorozco.com/bodega/foobie/280207.png - SixFeetUnder, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Yes on all counts.
- resprung, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18It's kind of cool that Foobar has always been so aggressively ugly and contrite (most famously, its developers hold some kind of grudge against the volume control).
For the USBDAC/audiophile crowd, Foobar2000 is broadly seen as the best way to pipe pristine digital audio from your library of losslessly encoded files (FLAC, SHN, APE) and out the USB port.
Foobars plugins boast a couple of upsamplers that supposedly leave all others in the dust - I'm running one that doubles the sampling rate, eating up 50% CPU all the while... But it does sound nice and velvety :-) - wounded625, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14songbird is really nice looking, but right now its a pos. it takes forever to open and once its open its really slow.
- Alisic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15foobar2000 = best
- seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I really love this config, and panelsui in general. I've been happy with columnsui as my interface for years, but it has always been hideously ugly and clunky. With panelsui, things are finally improving cosmetically, without losing any of the functionality I've come to depend on in foobar.
here's a quick shot of my slightly modified config on the "now playing" tab. So far, I've just appended the track duration after the tracktitle, and replaced the "browser" panel with a "playlist manager" with the help of another foobar user (thanks Atreus).
http://happykites.com/foobpanels.jpg - asdfasdf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15This is one of the apps I really miss by switching to Linux. I recommend it over Winamp. The sound quality is superior to Winamps', and so was the old interface.
- AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+101. Yes, by default.
2. Search for "foo_dop".
3. LyricsDB
4. Yes, ReplayGain by default. - CheezIt9109, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15You obviously have a playlist of what, 5 songs?
- seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9basscadet, the reason there's no executable is because there are so many different configs. Some people won't want certain components, or will want some that aren't included. Foobar is all about customization, and a single executable might discourage people from getting down and dirty. It's a little daunting at first, but well worth it.
here's a link (on my own space) to all the required components to make it easy for everyone to install. Just download this file (contains components & 2 fonts). Drop components .dlls into your foobar2000/components folder, drop fonts into windows fonts folder, download fofr's config file and follow install instructions. It's not as easy as winamp, but good things come to those who wait. Plus, things that require a little fiddling are always cooler.
http://happykites.com/foob.zip (components & fonts as of 3/19/07) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8i was hoping it would be much easier than that :(
- complexigon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Cool. I'm still using v0.8.3 with ColumnsUI, maybe it's time to update...
- Snyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9shrimpcrackers, "Probably has crappy speakers to think the earlier Winamps have anything resembling half-decent sound quality."
I love Foobar as much as the next audio geek, but shut the ***** up and quit spreading FUD. - kwanbis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@asdfasdf
I love fb2k, but, saying that "The sound quality is superior to Winamps" is BS. From the foobar2000 FAQ itself http://www.foobar2000.org/FAQ.html
Q: Does foobar2000 sound better than other players?
A: No. Most of “sound quality differences” people “hear” are placebo effect (at least with real music), as actual differences in produced sound data are below their noise floor (1 or 2 last bits in 16bit samples). Foobar2000 has sound processing features such as software resampling or 24bit output on new high-end soundcards, but most of other mainstream players are capable of doing the same by now. - chrislee149, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8@asdfasdf
As I Mac user, I can wholeheartedly agree. I would take this over iTunes any day. - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@alanorozco
Rockbox and iPodLinux don't make up for the lesser quality D/As the iPod uses. I know I may be the only one, but I hate the wheel on the iPod. If someone would make a player ...
-that loaded as a universal hard drive. I don't want your crappy bloatware in order to put songs on the machine
-came with at least 30 gigs of space. The more the merrier.
-played just about any audio codec out there. mp3, aac, flac, wav, ogg would be the top choices if it had to be limited.
-an FM tuner.
-easy user replacable Li-Ion battery.
-high quality D/A
That would just *****. Why no one seems to be able to make such a device is beyond me. - tmahmood, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Wish it was available for Linux :( foobar2000 is a great player
- spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You'd want to switch over because the player is tiny and simple, uses next to no resources, and supports zillions of formats natively. It's not a looker but it's a powerhouse. I've been using it for years and cringe at all the competition. I occasionally switch to Winamp 5 when I want to take advantage of its built-in streaming radio directory, but everything local is played on Foobar. Best audio player of all time, period.
- seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I didn't grab it, but here are the basics of installation (easier than it looks). Also looks like the site is back up.
1) First, install foobar2000 0.9.4 (http://www.foobar2000.org/)
2) Use the file I mirrored above (http://happykites.com/foob.zip) to download all the components. Each plugin should have a .dll file and sometimes a .txt. Drop the .dlls into your foobar2000/components directory.
3) Download fofr's panelsui config (panelsui is one of the components you installed) from one of the links above. Unzip to folder. Copy folder contents ( /images ,/old configs, etc.) into your base foobar2000 directory (so foobar2000/images would be your image directory). Copy "FofR - Black Reflection.pui" into C:Documents and SettingsUSERNAMEApplication Datafoobar2000PanelsUI and/or Program Files/foobar2000/panelsui/.
4) Open foobar, navigate to file->preferences->display. Select PanelsUI under the "User Interface Module" pulldown menu.
5) Navigate to the PanelsUI submenu under preferences->display. Select "fofr" .pui as your layout with the pulldown menu (changed from default.pui).
6) Restart Foobar. The new interface should now be active. Switch to "Now Playing" tab. Each portion of the interface has it's own code/scripts controlling the layout. The main space you're seeing can be left alone. Find the bottom bar (the area with "now playing", "playlist" & "browse" listed). Right click and select "Settings." You're now in the main script config.
7) Find this code comment right at the top:
"// **************************************************************************
// *** GLOBAL CONFIGURATION ***
// **************************************************************************
// IMPORTANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
// Directory that contains the style images (make sure there is no trailing slash)"
Modify that directory path to point to your images directory (for example, mine is c:Program Filesfoobar2000images)
8) find "// Set theme colour"... Set variable for the color theme you want.
9) Enjoy. You should see a green arrow on the bottom right and brownish "cog" button on the bottom right. Try opening these up and exploring around. - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Insightful comment. This is why we need a linux-based open source MP3 player with flashable firmware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Winamp user here, few questions before I consider switching over:
1. Do global hotkeys exist?
2. iPod support?
3. Lyrics plugin? (IE: leoslyrics.com)
4. Software volume control built in?
If no then why would I consider a switch? - Ub3rg33k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Looks awesome. I wish there was as much advancement in the portable hardware music players as there has been in software players recently.

Can't seem to get the theme's download (Both direct link and coralized one return error 404) - lillevillewilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There's also the little window down in the right corner of the statusbar where it usually says "0.00dB". That's your volume controller. You can click it to bring forth a slider, or just hover over it and use the mousewheel. Third-party components are available as well, as mentioned. Besides, with ReplayGain, you were never supposed to need the volume control anyway, unless you don't use an external controller such as an amplifier or active speakers with a volume control.

That is how just about every application is. That doesn't mean that they cant make a default install with the most popular components and then people can add to or take away from that. But having a general install that makes it easier would be a smart idea if they want this player to ever really take off. - seanherman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+51. Yes, Hotkeys for absolutely everything
2. Sort of. Unfortunately, this hasn't been completely worked out for the newest release, 0.9 (which is relatively recent). There is a plugin that adds ipod support, but it doesn't have a lot of the regular functionality, and isn't exactly ready for widespread release quite yet.
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=45160 (foo_dop)
3. Not personally familiar with this, but I know the functionality is out there. foo_lyricsdb seems like one plugin provided for this purpose, and there may be others
http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=36598
4. Yes, 0.9 finally has software volume built in and easily accessible. Unlike in 0.8, it doesn't have that saggy delay effect. The volume slider now works exactly like in any other audio player
In addition to all this, there are tons of other features that make foobar amazing. The built in masstagger component is by far my favorite plugin. This allows you to easily clean up and organize your tasks with an easy to learn scripting language. There are even plenty of premade scripts on the forums for some tasks (ie, I have one script that properly capitalizes my track titles/artists/albums). Foobar also has built in cd burning, and plenty of other features I can't even remember now. It's like magic. - derkaas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@resprung
Why on earth are you upsampling just for listening purposes? No amount of DSP can change the fact that the music on the CD was sampled at 44.1kHz. You're _probably_ not making it sound better by upsampling it to 96kHz or some such nonsense. Give your DAC the original bits and let it do it's job to the best of its ability. Then again, it may sound better to you, and that's all that really matters.
On the other hand, if you're not using an external DAC, and you're using some sound card that only plays at 48kHz, chances are the foobar upsampling is better than the sound card's.
And if that's the case, do yourself a favor and buy some equipment (virtually any pro or "prosumer" sound card, e.g. those from Lynx, M-Audio etc) that can handle that rate natively without any DSP. Regardless of your speakers/headphones, you'll be pleasantly surprised how much better these cards reproduce music on all fronts than your typical consumer card. - AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@spyrochaete:
iPodLinux and RockBox 'nuff for ya? :-)
And TrekStor Vibez, hardware wise. - andy2na, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4foobar will take awhile to get setup, but once you get it all setup, its like a dream
same goes with miranda, PITA to setup, but damn nice when done - AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Riffz and over90:
The first one is a work in progress, and currently only shows the track info.
You can get the second one here http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=49783&view=findpost&p=446174 (not by me). - AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That's against Foobar2000's TOS.
They could give this http://www.byalexv.co.uk/index.html?foobar.html a try, though. I'll be releasing my next configurations using that :-) - Riffz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4alanorozco: Very nice config, I hate to ask for it here in a comment but please share it on your website somewhere.
- AlanOrozco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Inacurate? How's it inacurate?
It only talks about the interface, that's it. - Johnatton, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Me too. I don't want to have to reconfigure it again.
- unabatedshagie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is the ONLY thing I miss since switching to linux. Amarok is ok but IMO it's nowhere near as powerful as foobar.
I might have a go at running it via WINE but I've heard that some/most of the plugins don't work properly. - Xuerian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Not to mention the ever-growing forum thread dedicated to screenshots and details about various configurations, http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=43077&st=5250
- hotsoda, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4You can use the - and + keys, or install a component that will give you a volume slider.
- Xuerian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3By default, FB2k still looks nearly like that - with the exception of a click-able volume control and rounded buttons - Just like you linked. This isn't a core FB change, but the PanelsUI plugin.
Kernel streaming still exists, and IIRC, so do all those other modules.
While 0.8.3 is still by all definitions a viable player, quality hasn't gone down with 0.9.x, and I applaud the entire community for getting better over time.
Rest in Peace, foo_looks. - pixogen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm using schluepfer's config from http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=49783
It took a bit to get everything working and I had to learn foobar at the same time, but it was well worth the switch from winamp :) - Arterus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here's another mirror: http://dongues.net/dls/FofR%20Foobar%20Code%20Release%20v0.6.zip

http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Foobar2000:Components_0.9/Panels_UI_%28foo_ui_panels%29
I have to admit though, I have yet to try this new ui out. - fofr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2A mirror for the config pack download:
http://www.rhbr33526.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/uploads/FofR%20Foobar%20Code%20Release%20v0.6.zip - Arterus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well, embedding album art in songs is kind of a wonky way to do things, anyway and adds useless data to every track. Give external files a try
- Aliarse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Someone has to port fb2k over to linux. Its the only audio player i like using, amarok, xmms, quod libet ect are simply nowhere near as good as fb2k.
